My real point was that even a right-angle power plug doesn't alleviate the problem -- the device, in portrait mode while charging, will still have a nub sticking out of it that will strain the fitting between even a right-angled USB connector and the USB/charging point on the NC.
The configuration described in the post I was responding to, in which a stuffed animal is used as a partial safety device? That's actually an improvement over what BN is shipping now, which is scary.
There are lots of folks who don't know about these issues at all and are continuing to read and charge and not worry much about it.
OK, now I see where you were going with this and totally agree. Sometimes it takes awhile for stuff to sink into my oldish brain. Thanks for the clarification.
I think that we can all agree that fixing this charging cord should be close to the top of their break/fix roadmap.

There was a question about that couch fire in Washington state, phrased thusly:
"The video of the fire/burnt couch is very good evidence that B & N does care! Was this a result of Sam's help?"
On the question of Sam, the fire occurred four months ago, before she was on these boards. I don't know if she was involved.
The story is not evidence that BN cares; it's evidence that BN cares about bad publicity.
The reporter here is a local TV consumer reporter. BN corporate moved once they got calls from him and knew a story about a fire caused by their product would be aired on television.
When the customer called customer service, she wasn't even able to get a replacement charger:
""I ended up calling six or seven times over the course of three weeks to try to get a charger, I haven't been able to get anything"
Here we are in June, and a week ago we had an escalation to tech support resulting in a board member here being told a nonexistent fan had failed, which is why her device was overheating.
Contrast that with the end of the February report: BN are "not sure what happened with the one that melted, but they say they are looking into it."
Tech support for BN still isn't up to speed on this.
That last is, I think, an area that Sam actually is working on now.

I've seen threads that people get charges from their computers, powerpacks, etc. The Automobile Charger comes with both the NC and the Nook cords included. The Nook cord is a standard miniUSB cord. I plug it into the NC charger and the charger does not get hot, where it does with the NC cord. I haven't tried the new cord and charger. It takes about double the time to charge as it does with the NC cord, but since the charger is in a power strip by the bed, I don't want a fire by a sheet or something hitting it accidently when it's hot. I would assume that any device that can produce the proper amperage/voltage would be able to charge the unit. It just doesn't have the shut-offs that the NC cord provide when the unit is fully charged.
I agree with Roustabout that allowing the landscape would be a big improvement but if it is like most of the apps, it would be on the wrong side for me so would still put some stress on the connection. They would have to allow full rotation as they do with the websites.

My usb plug was unstable when I left on vacation but I was able to manipulate it to complete a charge. I noticed some flaking of the plastic on the usb plug on the cord side. During the vacation, the plug completely stopped charging. The electical engineer in my life thought it could be the receptor, not the charging cable. Has anyone heard of such a problem or should my problem get solved when I go to B&N? And BTW, how completely infuriating to be on a 2 week vacation with 5 books that I can't access (in a foreign country of course with no B&N) Pam

I wonder if there is a non-BN alternative?
For the cord, what are the specs? Voltage/Amps/Resistance, etc? Connections: USB X.0 at one end and micro USB at the other?
For the charger, 110/120 Volts in? XX Volts out?(5V, I think)
I'm not an electrical kind of guy, so those specs are guesses.
UL listing? Type 2?
If anyone finds an alternate, I'd like to know. Replacing cords is all well and good, but, replacing with a product that may also prove defective seems anti-intuitive (is that a word even?)

Until now no manufacturer has been able to make a charger that fast charges the NC. All chargers sold for the NC are just regular USB chargers that take about 8 hours to charge the NC.
If you buy this one, please let us know if it really fast charges the NC.

Any USB connector that fits into the NC can be used to connect it to a powered USB port to charge it.
However, the charge will be slow on a vanilla USB connector; the Nook USB cable has extra conductors to carry the higher current for the fast charge. My memory is that 1 amp is coming off the BN charger.
Threadbinder raises an important point: the USB cable can fail, but so can the USB port on the NC itself.
At which point, no replacement cable will be able to charge it, either.

I love my Nook but I'm a voracious reader and my charge only lasts about 6 hours of continuous reading. I have had my Nook replaced once (my husband twice) with a rebuilt one from my local B & N store, along with the charger cord SEVERAL times. I agree that the charger cords are the weak point. If you read your Nook while charging the cord is too flimsy and will break quickly from being moved around. I buy several books a month! I am mystified by the complaints that it takes a long time to download books...I have nothing but compliments about our color Nooks except for 1) 6 hours or less of charge time and 2) the charger cords always breaking. My B & N store says they no longer stock replacement cords and I wonder if that is true or if we just wore out our welcome? We have gotten replacement cords about four times. We again need new charger cords (they last about 3 months before you have to start babying them to get them to charge) so I guess I have to call the 800 number. I hope this isn't the beginning of problems!

My situation is similar to yours, Lisalee. I read a LOT, and I've spent many $$ at B&N, where I do all my ebook purchases, on books for my Nookcolor. It's been replaced by the local store twice now and the cord as well, plus I've purchased new cords. Mine wear right where it connects to the plug that goes into the NC. I'm sure it's because I read while it's plugged in because of the small battery life.
The low battery life has been a real problem. I'm going to be traveling by plane and train and bus over the next few months, so yesterday I bought a Simple Touch that I'm told has a 60 hour battery life. I'm hoping, as soon as I get it loaded with all my library, will be a good "on the road" reader.
It's a great product idea, but the quality control could definitely use some tweaking.

Two of my charger cords have broken. I had no trouble replacing them at the store, but B and N needs to explore what the defects are and redesign them.

Local BN store refused to replace my frayed charger cord which I brought in to show them. Said I had to go through BN customer service. BN customer service declined to replace as my Nook Color is over 12 months old. Unfortunately, my Nook purchased 14 months ago . Guess will have to buy the replacement cord, no big deal, but BN should replace these cords and chargers as an unsafe product defect.
