I like the nook; however, I don’t like the feeling of not having the whole information about a device. When I purchased my nook, I was told it came with 8 GB of storage. After I brought the device back home and started using it, I realized that the system only displays 5 GB of actual storage space. So I contacted Nook tech support and asked them about the 3 GB of memory missing. Tech support told me that the 3 GB were in the device, however, not available for storage as is utilized for system updates (3 GB of space is a lot of space for system updates). Ok, I understand that but why I was not told that by either the sales individual at my local BN store before purchase, by the user’s guide or by the BN website under the device Specs. I just think it is not correct to advertise that something comes with a specific amount of total memory to later discover that is not true. I know we tend to lose space with Hard Drives and memory from the actual advertise size, however, 3 GB is a lot of space. I’m wondering what is BN really doing with those 3 GB of space, it can't be all for updates?

When you bought your laptop/desktop computer, the specs said you got a (for example) 750 GB drive. Did you complain because it only had 730 GB free? The space is used for file system overhead, and where did you think they were going to put the OS? ![]()
In other words, it's normal.

I hate to break it to you, but that missing 3 gig is used to run the encrypted secret Homeland Security Program that the Government forced B&N to put in there so they could track the reading habbits of Americans.
I really thought everyone knew that?

It's true that you don't get to use all 8GB, but still it's a lot more space than you get on other eReaders. For instance, the Kobo only can store only about 150 books in all. The NC is a great device and you never know what is going to come in the future. You might just be very grateful for that 3GB!! ![]()

All I can say is I have over 250 books on my Nookcolor and am only using 8 percent of my available space. I'm guessing I don't really need that many books on my device, but there is room for way more books than you really need. Now if you are storing movies then the space gets used up quickly, but how many movies do you really need to store on it as well. Plus you can use the SD card to store movies, lots of movies.

As many have stated previously, the standard practices of the computer industry have always been to mention how much total space your device has, not how much free space, but when selling the nook...customers are told that the device holds around 6k books, which would be how much around 5 gig free space would hold. I think it holds much more, with over 1000 books on my NC, I have only used 8% of my space! Also, if you are worried about space at all, the ability to expand and use a micro SD card is amazing and you can switch out libraries if you'd like.

Indeed. Even the holy iPad (grovel, grovel) doesn't allow expansion like that. ![]()

I know we tend to lose space with Hard Drives and memory from the actual advertise size, however, 3 GB is a lot of space. I’m wondering what is BN really doing with those 3 GB of space, it can't be all for updates?
*****
Firstly, EVERY SINGLE DEVICE has this.
When they say - 32 GB of space, they really mean:
It has 32 GB
5 GB we'll keep for our Operating System and for OS updates and for in-built Apps.
Another 1 to 3 GB get allocated for X and Y and Z.
You have 24 GB left.
*****
Why does B&N need 3 GB.
OS - probably 1 GB or more.
Space to do OS related stuff i.e. write log files and do checks etc.
Space to download updates and then run them.
In-Built Apps like Hulu and Calendar App
Space to keep data for system apps.
3 GB being used out of 8 GB is not very much.
*****
Finally, for $5 you can get a 8GB SD Card you can plug in. It's an option very few other Tablets have.
So for $5 you can replace the 'missing' 3 GB (needed for OS, not exactly used to store virtual 'We Stole Your Hard Disk Space' placards) with 8GB of space.
Word Search, Kriss Kross, Quote Falls, Hangman - Word Game Pack.
Alarm Clock, Weather, Calendar, ToDo - Alarm Clock & Calendar.
3 Hidden Objects Adventures - 3 Hidden Objects Adventures.
