I played with the new NST with GlowLight

[ Edited ]

I had the chance to play with the newest member of the Nook family last night.  It's a very nice device.  You can tell it apart from the NST by the silver-like edge around the device.  It is lighter in weight than the NST.  The biggest difference is not the light or the difference in weight:  it's the screen.  The NST's screen is smooth and friendly to the touch.  TheGlowLight nook's built-in anti-glare screen protector feels a little rough to the touch and in my opinion, the screen looks somewhat yellowish.

All in all, we are dealing with the NST with a major enhancement:  the glow light.  It's fairly easy to control it.  This innovation gives the reading experience a more ample dimension.

Where did you get to see it? Do they have them at B&N to look at yet?

I tried one too at my local B&N today.  The line of light along the top of the screen was much brighter than I expected, even in the very well-lit store.

I can't imaginge trying to read a book with that bright line constantly there above the page.  I think they might a lot of returns when people try it out in a darkened room at home.

Fortunately, the iPad app is in better shape than ever before.  B&N programmers have worked very hard on it, and the results are visually gorgeous.  Using the off-white on black background night setting at the lowest brightness is the perfect dark room reading experience.  And I can custom program for any lighting in which I might need to read.

As I understand it the default setting right now is blindingly bright.

The next time you look at one try adjusting the light.

Thank you for the suggestion.  I did try it at even the lowest setting.  As someone with vision in only one eye, I might be more sensitive to the light bar than fully-sighted people.

But I really do think that a lot of people will be dismayed by how bright and distracting the line is in a bedroom at night.

That's why I have both e-ink and backlit devices, and these days you can have both (and color, too) for not much more than you pay for a Glow screen.

Re: I played with the new NST with GlowLight

I can't wait to try it out :smileyhappy:

I am a little upset because my Nook is just a month old today and no one mentioned to me a new version was coming out. While I want the NST w/ Glow, I don't want to buy another new Nook. Uggh.

Can you turn the light off all the way or just adjust the brightness?

SO many books and SO little time to read them all!

Chrissy, the light is adjustable up and down, and can also be turned off completely.  Bummer about just buying the previous version.  I wish they would (could?) mention these things.

The durability of the screen protector?

This has been my primary concern, and is why I didn't pre-order one, but am on the waiting list at a local store:  I want to try it first.  I'm also curious as to the delicacy/durability of the screen protector to scratches.

Re: I played with the new NST with GlowLight

I sold my Nook Color in anticipation of the new Glowlight model, because I read more than 8 hours a day and needed the crisper text of e-ink, light weight, and extended battery life. I used to have a first generation Nook as well.  I went to the store today to check out the Glowlight model, and I found the difference in contrast to be pretty noticeable from the original Simple Touch.  The text is crisper on the original.  This is probably not a deal breaker for most people, and I imagine that many people wouldn't notice the difference.  For me, however, crisper text is the most important feature (well, together with battery life).  So, rather than pay the etra $40 and wait two weeks for a device that is not as visually sharp, I went ahead and bought the original Simple Touch.  I'm quite happy with it!

This is a pretty big deal for me also.  For me, if there are *any* trade-offs for the light I won't buy it, and from the reviews I'm seeing it sounds like there are some trade-offs.  So for me, I think I'm going to wait until the price drops or refurbs go on sale, and get it just for reading at night.

Re: I played with the new NST with GlowLight

Well I got mine and I have to say I'm disappointed,  I love the glow light aspect but the screen quality is not as good.  I've got them side by side (same page, same font, etc) and the regular nook has a darker font wtih a slightly lighter background, the glow has a bit of a hazy screen by comparison.

I wish it simply had the light but no change in the screen,  it's going back.

Re: I played with the new NST with GlowLight

hmm- that's disappointing.  I think (hope) the tradeoff will be worth it for me.  I'll know soon enough, I suppose.  Thanks for all of the reviews!

Unless you are a B&N employee and got to take a demo home I have to call false to this. Most stores have only just got a demo. Devices aren't even available for sale yet.

If you've been watching the forums, you would have seen that some devices are shipping early. In addition, mykoffee has been a valued member for a long time and there is no reason she would lie.

Oh good grief,   why would I lie?  I know I didn't give a great review of it but I really wanted to l like it.

Do you need proof?

Re: I played with the new NST with GlowLight

Sadly the web browser I am forced to use at work wouldn't let me edit my post without kicki9ng me offline entirely.  After 7 attempts I decided to not even bother. Even trying to quote Nallia booted me out.

After posting I did see other posts about people getting them early ( or expecting them early.) So my bad on that.

On another note having a large number of posts doesn't make someone  a pillar of the forum (for lack of a better word) I have been on enough forums to see the jerks with more post then the people who are actually there too help. I am not directing this last comment at anyone just making a point.

Ok in an effort to be more helpful I reregistered the device and took some comparison pics, though it's evening here and the lighting isn't that great.

Same book,  same page,  same font,  difference in line spacing,  oops.  The difference in screen quality isn't really showing up on film,  you all will have to compare for yourselves or someone with a better camera than my iphone, haha

This is as big as it displays my picture,  if you feel a full size picture would be helpful feel free to PM me your email address and I'll send it to you.

ETA:  I held them both up to my husband for his opinion on which screen has better quality, he woudln't know the new from the old,  he replied that the Nook Simple (regular) had better quality.  He said it looked to him like the font was different and I went into the settings and showed him that they were the same.  He said...Huh.   lol

Light on, actually the text is better with the light on -

It's ok.  I would hardly say I'm a pillar of the community but I've had the original,   I currently have the Nook Simple and the Nook Tablet and have now tried the Nook Glow.    I am a fan of the device in general and much prefer it to the kindle!  :smileyhappy:

Being a valued, credible member of a community is a lot more than post count. No one here has disputed that or even brought up post count, so I'm not sure what the point was there.
