I purchased a Nook Color for my granddaughter last Christmas. She installed approximately 12 apps between Christmas and today and had not experienced any problems running them. This afternoon she called me and said that 8 of the apps had a "download" button and would not run. I told her to go ahead and click the button. The apps then proceeded to download and install again. Any ideas what could have caused the apps to "disappear"?

I believe a system restore and/or a firmware update. Like the one recent. Since you bought for christmas then probably just recently updated the firmware which many times requiring to re-download purchases.
Just a guess.
