LOVE the Glowlight!

My new NST with Glowlight arrived in the mail today.  The Glowlight is glorious!  It's amazing, really.  I can't even describe how it looks or give an explanation as to how they even did this.  The light is so evenly distributed and the brighter portion at the top is practically unnoticable, even at the highest setting.  Much less noticeable than the video reviews are showing it, in my opinion.  Now I don't have any glare from my clip on light and I don't have to position the NST in such a way as to not have a bright spot of light on the screen.  I cannot even believe how much cooler this is than I expected!!

I want to say that the back feels smoother than my original NST, and I can feel the difference in the weight too.

I hated having to recreate all my shelves though, but even that is such a small consolation compared to how much more I just got in return.

The software version says 1.1.5.

Re: LOVE the Glowlight!

I should have also said that there IS a slight (very slight) difference in the text.  In my opinion it is not noticeable enough to qualify it as a trade off at all, and I want to say that I think most folks won't even notice or care.

Re: LOVE the Glowlight!

That is a relief!  Thank you for sharing.  I was starting to worry about my pre-order (I ordered it yesterday, btw, and it says it is expected to ship on 5/15).

Anyway, great to read a "glowing" review. :smileywink:

I noticed the back was smoother as well, it felt great!   However the difference in quality of screen was quite noticible to me,  but I guess I am picky.  :smileyembarrassed:

Re: LOVE the Glowlight!

Thanks lindajm22!  I'm relieved as well.  Imperfect booklights have been my #1 complaint since I got my first Sony PRS-500 a long, long time ago, so this is a really big deal for me.  I can't wait to get my hands on one!  My tracking info has said "Billing Information Received" for the past two days.  So much for "expedited" shipping- ha.

Re: LOVE the Glowlight!

Mine said that for a couple days too.  I'll bet you get yours tomorrow since you ordered yours the day after I did.  You're going to love it!  Like I said, the text is slightly different, it's not quite as dark, but I wouldn't say it is not as crisp.  You'll see.  Not a big deal for me and probably something they can tweak with software updates.

Re: LOVE the Glowlight!

Thanks lindajm22- I hope so!  Your account of it has made me transition back to "giddy" again- haha.  Mine went from "Billing Information Received" to "No Record of That Item" back to "Billing Information Received" and now, three days later, it says "Data Unavailable".  I've never heard of "Argix Direct", but man... they seem pretty terrible.

Re: LOVE the Glowlight!

I also received my Nook with Glowlight on the 25th.  The light works well but it's not perfectly distributed.  It really doesnt bother me too much once I start reading, but it is noticeable.

My biggest problem is the screen.  I was not expecting the decrease to the contrast, but it is significant and very noticeable especially when compared side by side to the Simple Touch without the Glowlight.  The ST looks black and the STG looks light grey.  I am very disappointed in this.  From the reviews I expected a slight decrease in contrast but this is much worse than I anticipated.

My mix of reading is 80/20 in the light so I probably will return the Glowlight version shortly.  I need to stop comparing it to my old ST.

Re: LOVE the Glowlight!

I just got my new nook (had the Nook first edition and then the Nook Simple Touch).  I noticed that the text is not as bold/dark on the Glowlight edition (compared them side by side).  Is it the screen protector that is causing the difference or is there a difference in the e-ink?  I still am happy with it.  It is still very legible.

Re: LOVE the Glowlight!

I just got my new Glowlight today too and I also love it. I sold my N2E a couple weeks ago so I don't have them sitting side to side though. In any case i don't think it would matter to me. Using ths one and having the light for evening reading is wonderful. I did notice that the screen feels more responsive so I am appreciating that extra benefit too.

Just out of curiosity, @kenwinston, how many times did you copy and paste the same comments?

The answer appears to be 4, the same as the number of posts ken has. :smileyhappy:

I think I'll probably be turning it in prior to the end of the trial period (2 weeks) and just using a Kindle Touch just as I've used books for the past xxxx yrs.

Just thought you'd like to know....

I hope you make your decision on the advantages and disadvantages of each device and vendor as a whole, and not just one feature.

If you really want to get technical, he could have just copied once, and pasted thrice.  :smileytongue:

Re: LOVE the Glowlight!

For those of you who have received the Nook GL, did you order online, or did you order it in store?

If in store, did you pay for it up front?

I ordered mine in store the morning it was announced and was told there was no need to pay up front,  but now I'm growing frustrated it isn't here yet and I see others have had theirs for a week or so. If I had known I could have recieved it sooner by ordering, I would have done it online.

I suppose I should consider myself lucky, because I only reluctanly purchased the regular Nook Simple Touch a month ago in spite of the fact that I had guessed there might be an update soon (I hate buying older gen electronics). A week after I fell in love with my new Nook, I was so pleased to hear the Nook GL was announced, and since I was within the trial period, I returned my Nook and pre-ordered the new one immediately. Of course, I've been without my Nook since and I'm growing very antsy!! Going away to the mountians this weekend, can't stand the thought of not having it up there!

Re: LOVE the Glowlight!

I ordered online on the 18th;  the devices arrived at close of business yesterday.

  • I called the local store on 4/18 to reserve a unit (no deposit).
  • The store called me on 4/30 to tell me that the unit would be available on 5/1, and would be held for me until 5/4.

Re: LOVE the Glowlight!

I reserved my Glow instore on either the 19th or 20th, and picked it up on the 30th. I didn't pay until I picked it up.
