All I can say Mark is wow,

I think you need to check in more often so you don't have so many posts to comment on at once.  :smileyhappy:

How right you are, Nom!

Unfortunately, I got pulled away, and spent most of the last week working overtime, finding bugs in another company's firmware, so that people wouldn't die.  Can't say any more than that.

Sadly though, it kept me from my appointed rounds here.  :smileyhappy:  So many people to be corrected... so little time.  :smileyvery-happy:

Nice.  Yeah, I've only been here 2 weeks but gained 53 laurels from my 9 posts as compared to your massive 10 laurels from 153 posts in 2 YEARS as a member.  Way to go!

As it happens, I picked up a Samsung Galaxy Tab 7+ yesterday from Bestbuy for just $100 more than the Nook Tablet (now $350 down from $400) and it is everything the NT isn't.... its smaller, lighter, thinner, open and has more features. And it's running Honeycomb out of the box with ICS update in the works.

Importing my Google accounts was simplicity itself, I get full Android market access and laughably, the Nook app from the market is superior to the app installed on the NT with proper page turn animations and a wider variety of fonts. I have the Kindle app right next to the Nook app - best of both worlds.

To demonstrate the ease of use - I had literally just added my Skype credentials to the GT7+ and my daughter called in from Europe... I pressed the 'answer' button and we were chatting. No hacking or bypassing anything.  Try that on the NT.  Oh, and I get cut and paste LOL.

Seriously, the NT is crap as it stands with the current software. It's really just an eReader with some very limited added functions. But no need to take my word for it - try the real thing and you'll see the difference for yourself.

Phil,

Glad you found a device that suits your needs.  However, I am guessing you paid A LOT more for that Samsung than $249.

Yep, it was $350 as I said in my last posting - just a bit more in price but a world apart in function. Anyways, I'm happy with my purchase and can spare everyone my whining now!

I really don't think that advanced users such as me will ever really be truly happy with the Nook Tablet but it's a beautifully made piece of hardware and if you can live with it's limitations (that might not be so limited if B&N issue some good updates) then my guess is it will meet the purposes of many users.

I have a spare silicon skin (smoke effect) for the NT I will mail free to whoever says they want it first. I found it really helped with getting a good grip on the NT and gives some protection.

The Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus is currently on sale at BB for $349 and that is a killer price.. If you want a full Android Tablet, jump on that if you can as that's only $100 more that the NT and it won't be the pile of junk that most budget variety Tablets offered by acer and archos will be..

If you Galaxy Tab didn't work better for an extra $100 there would be a problem.

You are totally right. $100 for something that works rather than something that doesnt (for me) seems like a deal.

I could give a care about video specs.  The poster nails the point here about the apps and the lack of them.  I opened my NT with nothing but excitement to see this great device I bought with weeks of research under my belt regarding specs and ability.  I shot right to the app store and wanted to cry.  Weak doesn't even begin to describe it.  It's like a guy sits in his basement and makes a new crummy app every week or so.  Outside of Angry Birds and Scrabble (which they market excessively), there is NO proprietary stuff worth owning.  I want Facebook, a cool superhero game, a nice card game set, NFL,NBA, ESPN, you know, GOOD STUFF!!!  Not these floofy, no name, dopey, limited apps.  Quell?  Next best thing you got?  You are in trouble when you lose the market of people like me who expected a ton more out of this.  I'm not screaming for sideloading, but you gotta develop apps, and godspeed.  It's sad in there.  Very sad.

Re: My Nook Tablet review posted to Amazon and Best Buy product pages

I picked up a 7.0 Plus from Best Buy tonight (was the last one they had) but still have my NT.. Figure I have 2 weeks to decide which one to keep.. I already have a Galaxy Tab 10.1 and might end up giving that to my son.. I am very happy with the NT but the price of the 7.0 was to hard to pass up... So far there are things I prefer on the NT and there are things I prefer on the Galaxy Tab.. Not sure which I wilk end up keeping but I will say that at $249 the NT ROCKS..

Sorry floridaphil but I do not work on "glee" points ok? My main point is your going to be gone from here soon so why bother. I dont need glee points as I know how to operate a simple ereader.

Re: My Nook Tablet review posted to Amazon and Best Buy product pages

Hey Phil, always sorry to see folks who want the device to succeed leaving, but I understand. Personally, I'm going to stick it out with B&N a bit longer. They've got the basic 'reader' experience pretty well where I want it, and if they'll just quit treating users like the enemy, they'd have the perfect device for my needs. By the sound of it, for a lot of other users as well.

Re: My Nook Tablet review posted to Amazon and Best Buy product pages

Floridaphil (or anyone else who knows)

The Galaxy Tab does sound impressive I went out to see the reviews  Cnet's video review looked impress.. engadgets review was luke-warm, but I think that had to do with it's price at the time, and they were looking for more for that price range.. (I think)..

But, I got confused with if it is WiFi, or bluetooth, or both.. Verizon & Sprint seem to offer it lower prices $199 with a 2 year plan.. But I read on some reviews WiFi..   I am assuming the $350 is for without plan??   True???

That would be a great solution if it carries both, for our son, who finishes college this Summer, if we can buy one without a 2year plan attached, as we do not want to carry his phone bill for another 2 years.. But if he has the option of making it his phone (if the size is not a problem for him).. Then since he is complaining over his phone not working quite right, he would have that option until he buys his own phone & plan..

Still may wait for myself though.. buying 2 Tablets for $350 is a little steep, and all indications are that I am right, if I can wait and be happy with a simple cheaper e-reader for a year, next year will be a whole different ball game with great options for a good price..

Then why did you and those of you who are similarly upset, purchase this device?   Anyone who looks through these forums would know, beforehand, that there is a lack of apps for this device.  It is a closed Android device, with no access to the Android market unless rooted.   This is no secret.  We all have the freedom to choose to go get other tablets with full access to all the Android apps out there.   I chose this device knowing this, because I looked through the forums and read many user reviews, and I knew exactly what I was getting.  Thus, I'm not as upset.   User responsibility states that you should always do the reasearch before handing out the cash.

Someone new who hasn't read the last 1000 posts? OH well for the one thousand and one time...

Because when most of us bought it it, was open to sideloading!!!  No Secret??  Well FlyingToastr keeps saying it was clearly stated as a bug to be fixed in some interview.. To which he has yet posted a link to that interview, nor show how it would be something no one doing research on the device could possibly not run across, Nor shown where it was clear and up front stated ("SIDELOADING EXCEPT FOR APPS") or ("APP SIDELOADING WILL SOON BE DISCONTINUED") on any promotional flyer or Ad campaign,  or the B&N web site promoting the Nooks, nor user guides..

NOW if someone does research and doesn't come away reading some of the negative reviews & feedback about the closeing of sideloading "AFTER PURCHASE"..  If anyone did their research After December 22nd? 23rd?  and did not learn this, you can state it was no secret..

But if research was done before that date, then all reviews and research pointed to that capability (or implied it by stating you could sideload your own content..)

Because they've executed the hardware nearly perfectly, and have tremendous promise. Rather than being nay-sayers, many of us are actually rooting for B&N to succeed. We're not asking for a pirate media player, or to compromize the god-given rights of big corporate media, but rather a bit more functionality that the hardware demonstrably can accomodate.

I am absolutely delighted by the fact that a company that "gets" readers managed to out-fox Amazon and Apple and produce the winner that is the Nook Color, and I'm frustrated by the fact that they suddenly seem intent on hobbling its successor for arbitrary reasons that actually drive me away, not only from the Nook, but from B&N in general.

I, too, did my research before purchasing, and at that time (July 2010), B&N was producing a device with tremendous potential and a bright future. By all indications, they were going to produce a killer device that filled a perfect niche between a high-end 10 inch tablet and a basic e-reader. To suddenly shift direction and lock everything down -- citing security, Netflix and Hulu as the reasons -- makes little sense when those same apps are available on the Android Market to run on cheap knock-off devices. Android seems "secure enough" for Verizon, Sprint and AT&T to bet their massive communications farm on.

The research that indicated that the device had a locked bootloader also mentioned that sideloading could be done. You'll notice that they don't list the locked boot loader on the box. More importantly, it's just a bad idea. I've listed my thoughts on that topic at length in another thread, if you're interested. It's a bad direction to head in to start with (IMO, of course), and to change directions after launch only frustrates supporters. What we used to call "customers" before they became "consumers".
