Re: [N2E] Wishlist for 1.1 Update

All nice suggestions. I would like to one more to this.

- more bright (or white) background on pages so we get improved contrast while reading.

Isn't that physically impossible?  Darker text maybe but the beige background is stationary.

Re: [N2E] Wishlist for 1.1 Update

  • support SVG links (touch to jump to new location)
  • (for the umpteenth time) support multi-level TOC
  • a more functional web browser & ability to download/sideload content from browser
  • image zoom/pan
  • image viewer (for manga etc.). like Kobo Touch.
  • PDF zoom/pan, landscape fit-to-width viewing
  • display cover images for ADE-loaded books

Re: [N2E] Wishlist for 1.1 Update

I think it would be great to be able to lock the touch screen so when reading a book you could press a lock button on the screen and the touch screen would no longer respond until you pressed the "n"button or maybe the power button in back.  Users could still navigate pages with the side buttons but would not risk touching the screen and losing their place.  I sometimes fall asleep while reading and I touch the screen on the right or left and lose my place.  I've talked to a lot of people who agree with this.  It would especially help at the beach if you were to put it in a ziplock bag or waterproof case(the bag would not affect the touch screen as it would be locked).  What do you think?  By the way, I love my N2E!

[ Edited ]

1.  Better shelving

2.  Lock code

3.  Ability to "upload" shelving, i.e., let me organize the books in the shelves the way I want them with the larger screen and UI capabilities of my Mac or PC.

Just curious, how often has B&N provided software updates for their Readers?

I would like know this as well.

I can only speak for the N1E as I don't have a NC.  For the N1E there were a number of software updates in the first few months after the device launched that focused on bug fixes.  After this they tapered off and I'd guess we've had two in the last year.

There have been no udpates to the N2E so far.  There was an article from the end of June that stated that a B&N source had said there would be an update in two weeks (i.e. mid-July), but we haven't seen it yet.  So the first N2E update could be any day now, or not for weeks.

Actually the 1.01 upgrade is just out.  Get it here for sideloading or wait for it to download automatically via wifi in the next few weeks (but you have to leave wifi on which drains the battery).  Quote:

The All-New NOOK Ver1.0.1 is a minor update based on early customer feedback that includes:

  • Connect more easily to Wi-Fi hotspots
  • Improved touchscreen responsiveness
  • Enhanced accuracy of battery meter

"early customer feedback" -- hey that's us!  Thanks for listening, B&N!

1. When I decide to buy a book while reading the sample and hit the Buy Now button, it would be great if I was returned to the page I was just reading in the now complete book.

2. When I transfer news to my N2E (via Calibre), each source shows up twice in the library, even though it shows up only once under /Nook/My Files/Magazines.  Known bug?

3. It would be great if someone would upgrade the Blackberry Nook app to keep track of the last page read just like all the other apps!

4. Using the hidden browser, I have trouble pulling up a keyboard when I need to enter something.  Is there a trick to this I'm missing?

All in all though, a great ebook reader!

Re #2: After a little experimentation, I found that if I move the news from /Magazines into the /Books/Unknown folder (using my PC), each news source correctly shows up just once.

Re #4: I should add that I get a keyboard sometimes, for example, to search for a book on BN.com, but not others, as when I attempt to enter something into the search field on Google or Yahoo, at which point the browser often crashes.  Also longer pages don't always scroll properly.  I'm guessing that the browser isn't yet stable, which perhaps is why its presence wasn't officially announced.

Here are two more ideas:

5. How about letting us download new content through the N2E browser?  Although I can download a book from Gutenberg.org, it doesn't show up in my library or anywhere in the visible directory listing when viewed on my PC with the Nook plugged in to it.  Or was not including this a "business decision"?

6. It would be nice to have the option on the N2E to delete content I've transferred from my PC after I've read it rather than having to do it back on the PC.

A solution to #4 is to use Startpage.com to search instead of Google or Yahoo.

Re: [N2E] Wishlist for 1.1 Update

I just bought the N2E this last week. Aside from the other issues with the shelves, every time I plug in the Nook to sideload a new book all of the over 400 books I have on my SD card get removed from the shelves they were on. This is very annoying. It was already annoying to have to go through my entire book list to organize it and then for all that work to be lost in seconds. This is one issue that needs to be resolved.

Re: [N2E] Wishlist for 1.1 Update

1. When books are sorted by author, show them in the same format as the 1st ed NOOK: each author's name appears once with a list of books underneath.

2. If metadata indicates that books are in a series show them in series order, even if  books are generally sorted alphabetically.

3. Restore the ability to delete books from the device without tethering to a computer, as in the 1st ed NOOK.

4. Make it possible to disable the wake-on-LAN "feature" that was apparently added by software 1.0.1. I want to control when my device downloads books.

Re: [N2E] Wishlist for 1.1 Update

Please add a battery percentage indicator and the ability to access Settings to the WiFi menu that appears when you tap the clock, the way you did with the NC 1.1 update.

Re: [N2E] Wishlist for 1.1 Update

I have 94% of my battery remaining.  The battery meter in the Device Info screen under 'Settings' matches this percentage.

When I'm in my book the meter shows MUCH lower percentage left.  (maybe 75%?)

On the Home screen the battery meter is the same as when I'm on the Device Info screen.

What gives?  I thought the 1.0.1 update (which I got last week) was supposed to fix this.

Re: [N2E] Wishlist for 1.1 Update

Ditto on #2 -- this worked on the Nook1.  I got the "free 30 books" from B&N when I purchased the Nook, and I want to add them to a new shelf, but unless I write down all of their names, and then go to the new

shelf and select them, there's no way that I know of to do this.

And a related change -- bring back (unless I don't know where it is) the "Unshelved" book display.  If a book is not on any shelf, it doesn't appear (if I'm doing something wrong on the Nook2 and this is really available now, please tell me how).

And my personal request -- please bring back the bar at the bottom of the reading page that shows approximately where you are in the book.  The "page x of x" numbers are useful, but the visual display of where you are in the book, as on the Nook1, was really good.

Re: [N2E] Wishlist for 1.1 Update

[Sorry if this has already been mentioned....]

Please allow custom text settings to be made per eBook.  I'm often fiddling around with the settings to make one eBook readable, only to have the next one I open messed-up because the new settings don't apply to it.  If I fix things for that book, then the first is now akilter.

Thanky!

I'd like to vote for:

  1. A more functional web browser & ability to download/sideload content from browser to the SD card
  2. Ability to update GoodReads with currently reading and wishlist content
  3. Ability to use EPUB tags for shelves

Re: [N2E] Wishlist for 1.1 Update

Another thing:

I'd like my bookmarks sorted by their relative order in the ebook, not in the order I created them: that makes no sense to me.

Re: [N2E] Wishlist for 1.1 Update

I think BN had plenty of experience with N1E and Kindle to know what functionality to put into N2E.

I just got my N2E this week after having an N1E for a year. I love it.

But I would also like the time displayed always. Perhaps it could be refreshed every page turn without sacrificing battery life. And since two months is extremely long, I think that even if it shortens the battery life to 1 month that would be acceptable.

I'm sure I'll come up with other enhancement suggestions later. But that's all I noticed so far.

Re: [N2E] Wishlist for 1.1 Update

On my wife's Nook2 (already replaced when less than a month old due to excesive battery use) if she looks at settings by hitting the Nook key...when she goes back to the book she was reading...it's at thw wrong page#. I have not seen that on my Nook though. Weird.

My Nook sometimes goes back to the cover of the book I'm reading after I go into settings.  I tried to bookmark the page before I go into settings, but the bookmarks get removed after I go into settings, too, so I still have to look for the page I was reading. I would really love for this to be fixed because it's seriously annoying.

Also, my battery indicators still don't match up even after the update which is why I'm going into the settings so often to check how much battery I have left.

I would also like to be able to tap on a book and shelve it that way.  I don't even bother with shelves except for the few I might be reading currently reading.
