NST with Glowlight -- VERY nice

I bought this device yesterday, and it is an excellent improvement over the original NST, which I have had since August of last year.

In dim indoor lighting, I needed a clip-on light with my NST.  The lighting provided by the Glowlight is much more pleasant, even display.

Outdoors, the Glowlight model does not provide quite as much contrast as the original.  The background is slightly yellowish.  Without holding the two side-by-side, however, I don't notice the difference, and I have spent many hours reading outdoors with my original NST.

The half ounce decrease in weight is not noticeable until I pick up the original NST, when I am always surprised that it feels heavier than the new one.  Again, not a significant difference.

In average indoor lighting, the Glowlight is substantially more crisp than the original.  That front-lighting REALLY makes a difference.

Re: NST with Glowlight -- VERY nice

How is the NSTG holding up? Any tears in the screen to let the light shine through like others have noted? I have the 1st generation Nook and have been looking at the Simple Touch Glow. I like it but just wondering if there are more issues with the light/screen tears or if it is just a random problem.

I've not seen any of the tearing or spots of lights some have reported. However, mine has periods of very jagged and faded text (it looks like it was printed on a printer low on ink) that sometimes putting it to sleep then waking it fixes, sometimes it doesn't. At any rate it is never as dark and crisp as it was on my N2E without the glow. The text is very faded compared to when I first got it...so much so I have stopped using it altogether and read on my Nook Tablet or Nexus 7. I don't know if they are all like this or if I just got a bad unit.

Edited to add I have had it since they first came out.

Re: NST with Glowlight -- VERY nice

I have had my NSTG about 3 weeks so far and absolutely love it. No tears or holes that others have reported. I hope to have and use it for a very long time.

I have also seen that the text is not as clear on some pages but once it refreshes about every 5-6 pages or so it clears up again.

Again, I do love my new NSTG and hope to use it for a long time.

Re: NST with Glowlight -- VERY nice

I just got mine in the mail. It is charging. I don't have wifi so I will go around the corner to a cafe and register it. There was a thread saying that it has no wall charger. It had the USB and wall charger. It didn't say so in the sale ad. The NST is so light.

Re: NST with Glowlight -- VERY nice

I do have a slight tear in mine but fortunately it's at the bottom of the page. It is annoying though because it's a bright line shining on the page. It's supposed to be scratch resistant and I'm wondering if this tear is covered under the protection plan I purchased.

It should be, but if it were me I'd try to exchange it as a defect first.  There have been quite a few people reporting this issue, and it seems B&N knows that the screens have this defect.

Thanks. Just to let you know that I called B&N and they are sending out a replacement. I'm sure it will be a refurb but hopefully it will have undergone a good QC.

Re: NST with Glowlight -- VERY nice

I have had mine since late July. I am not careful with it. I don't use a cover. I carry it in the back pocket of my jeans. The screen looks as good as it did new.

OTOH, I recommended it to a friend, and hers developed the dreaded bright spot on the screen after a couple weeks of careful use.

I spoke too soon.  After a couple hours of reading outside, I came into the RV, turned on the glowlight, and a bright white spot appeared on the screen.

B&N is sending me a replacement.

I wonder if there is a connection with temprature of the device or time in the sun.  Just a thought.

Re: NST with Glowlight -- VERY nice

It very well could be the sun.  I first noticed it while camping. I don't use the glowlight much but I love to sit by the campfire and read. I had been reading at the beach for a while. I usually like to sit in the shade but even the heat might affect it.

Re: NST with Glowlight -- VERY nice

I just bought my NST with Glowlight today because I sold my NST.  I was excited to get away from the book lights that I constantly misplace or having the batteries die.  Now I'm kind of scared about all of the tears and holes I'm reading about.  Honestly, I didn't put much thought into it when I sold my NST to semi-upgrade.  I figured it would be just as good as the NST.  Now I'm definitely glad I bought the warranty for it.

Re: NST with Glowlight -- VERY nice

Temp is a really interesting idea.  An adhesive bonding the screen protector to the screen could very easily liquify, even slightly, when temp goes > 100 or 110 F on the surface, or it could be that gas trapped in the adhesive expands at that temp, then leaves a residual, small bubble once the screen cools down again.  That small trapped bubble would definitely distort the light path.

This would explain a lot of what we've heard with folks being very careful and still having these hotspots.

Who wants to microwave an NSTG to confirm?  :smileyhappy:

Ooh, I do. As long as it is not mine. Any volunteers?

Lol, I was going to volunteer to do this, but then I relaized that not only would I need someone to give me an NSTG, but I'd also need someone to give me a microwave. :smileysurprised:

I work in a sign shop, and work with adhesives all day, every day.  I highly doubt (I cannot say with certainty) that the problem comes from heat.  It very-well could be a delamination problem that is causing these issues, but I would be shocked if heat was the cause.  When we run our laminator, the lowest temperature adhesives melt (wet out) at about 190 degrees...

<h2oskierc chose to muddy the theoretical waters with hands-on facts and experience.>

h2oskierc, you have facts to add to an intertubes speculation?

Facts added after it's too late for me to edit my post and take those facts into account?

Have you, sir, no decency?

My apolgies.  I hang my head in shame.  No, GREAT SHAME.  I will forever banish myself from this thread, as well as any logic at all.
