Re: Nook Tablet?? Disappearing from the B&N website?

Last summer, I passed on my origina Nook to a friend.  It was still under the extended warranty.  The Nook failed. B&N sent my friend a Simple Touch, no hassels.  So I'd expect that if someone's NC/NT failed and there were no more available, they'd get the HD in exchange.

Re: There's a pattern here ...

DeanGibson: At my local B&N store:

  1. Shelf space (and prices) for the cases for the Nook 1st Edition started to dwindle a month or so before the availability of the devices dwindled.
  2. Shelf space(and prices) for the cases for the Nook Color and Tablet started to dwindle a month or so before the availability of the devices dwindled.
  3. Shelf space (and prices) for some of the cases for the Nook Touch and Glow have started to dwindle.  Example:  B&N used to carry at least five different colors of the Lautner case;  the bn.com website is now down to two Lautner colors, and they are NOT the popular ones.

That doesn't sound promising.

It's possible this is just a shortage due to Christmas shoppng.  Or it could be a sign that the e-ink refresh for spring is a different size/shape, though if they're tapering off on stock now, then I'm thinking the new device will be coming before May.

So speaking as a store employee I can tell you, the NC and NT are essentially done.  Whatever stock a store has in at this moment is the last that store will have.  Once they sell out, that's it.

I can not speak to how this will affect those who are under the protection plan.  Except that I imagine it will become standard that if your device breaks the stores will not have refurbished NC/NT devices to swap and you'll have to have one shipped to you (while those supplies last).  After the refurbished devices are gone I have no clue what will happen.  I am also not willing to guess at possibilities.

To those freaking out thinking we wont help you in the store with your NC/NT devices let me tell you about one of my customers today.  She had a first edition wifi nook.  She was having issues with books downloading.  I took a look, and it seemed like she had just left wifi off, so I turned that on, tried downloading, and it worked.  I explained to her that she needed to be in wifi to download pre-ordered books when they became available.  The point of this story?  That Nook was the first Nook device we sold, you can't buy it anymore save through used vendors, you can't buy cases or batteries or anything for it on the website or in store, and she was treated the same as if she had brought in a Nook HD+ 32gb (the highest end of the new Nooks).

As to when it will become hard/impossible to get cases and chargers for the NC/NT I can not say, because I really just don't know.  This is also why I try to urge folks who bought Nook Tablets, especially the 16gb ones, recently to exchange them for 8gb Nook HDs.

I tried to get a new case for my iPod touch right after the newer model became available and it was within a few weeks and there were no cases to be found anywhere but online.  I talked to a couple of stores, they flat out said, once the newer model comes out, they don't stock accessories like that for the previous model.  Really annoyed me, but I suppose, with shelf space being limited in stores, they're going to stock what works with whatever device they are selling.  Hopefully, BN will at least have accessories for the NC and NT available online for a while.

Re: Nook Tablet?? Disappearing from the B&N website?

Science_Man, if you purchased your NC/NT on or after November 15th you should have until January 31st to return it.  This is part of B&N's holiday return policy.

To return your NC/NT you'll need/should have the following

The device (of course), and preferably the box.  The box is not required, it just makes the return easier for whoever helps you.  And I can assure you that this time of year they will apreciate that all the more.

Your receipt.  This is pretty key, and while it is -possible- they will make an exception it is by no means at all required that they honor a return without a receipt.  I could list the reasons for this, but that I think most of them are common sense.

If possible repackage the device (you don't need to shrink wrap it, or anything like that just put all the parts back in the box).  Go to your local B&N and explain that you want to exchange a recently purchased NC/NT for a Nook HD.

You will have to pay the difference between the devices.

To clarify, there is currently no trade in program.  If the powers that be have one in the works they have not told anyone at the store level.  The only way to 'trade' a NC/NT for one of the HD devices is if you purchased it within the return window specified above.

EXACTLY!

Shelf space might be short due to the emphasis on new devices, but why drop items from the bn.com website if stock is short?  Why not just show "out of stock" (as they sometimes do for other items)?

Re: There's a pattern here ...

Thanks Dean.

Yes, it does seem a new Nook must be imminent.

If you think about it, it's been a while since Nook with Glowlight came out.

Pretty sure B&N knew Amazon would release a Kindle with a Glowlight and it planned something. Releasing it in March to May would be smart. They should just make sure they have enough to sell. I read in an interview they did with the B&N CEO that they lost out on lots of sales because they didn't anticipate the demand for the Glowlight version.

Agreed!  I really hate it when companies (of all types) nuke all their web-info on a product 5 seconds after it's no longer currently being sold.  As if it never existed

B&N is certainly not unique in this regard, but it doesn't make me like the practice any better.  Move the materials and deprecate the links, but leave the information available for those who might want to go back and look at something.

Well, the Nook Color and Tablet are back in the Nook menu pull-down, but following the links gives  "Sorry, we could not find what you were looking for."

And the number of colors of the Nook Touch Lautner covers is back up to three on the bn.com site.

Every time I see "Lautner covers" I think of shirtless Taylor Lautner.

I'm honestly curious: what NT/NC pages are you looking for? All the support stuff is still right on the site where it was, as are the pages for the accessories and such - all that's really missing is the sales page for the actual device.

Well, for one, the specifications, like the weight, dimensions, and WiFi protocols, to compare against current products.  Unlike almost every other manufacturer in the universe, B&N does not include that information in their user manuals.  Historically, it's been on B&N sales pages.

Oh, wait;  it's on the http://nookdev.com web pages, and on the Wikipedia pages for the Nook.

Re: Nook Tablet?? Disappearing from the B&N website?

Has anyone noticed that books that were downloaded to your tablet, are disappearing. When I try to add the file from Nook for PC, it disappears again, with and error message of "This item is not currently available for download to the product you are using"

I went to the B&N's My Nook and could read the book on the NOok for Web but not on the tablet. They are still selling said book as a Nook Book but I could not see anything on device restrictions. You want to know what book it is Born to Bite by Lynsay Sands

I have my books back'd up, so I have no worries there, it is just strange. When I was reading this topic I thought to ask.

Re: Nook Tablet?? Disappearing from the B&N website?

I have been getting that "not available for the product you are using" for about the last 12 hours. Off and on. If you try again for the book a few minutes later, it randomly works.

This has been happening on my late-model Android phone, not just my Nook. So it's not related to any hardware phase-outs.

Re: Nook Tablet?? Disappearing from the B&N website?

Thank you for the quick response. I was dreading to have to de-register. I have 52 different shelves and 1023 books just on the nook. I really only want to do it as a last resort. :smileyhappy:

This morning, on the B&N main web page I saw "101 NOOK Books Under $2.99", so I clicked on it, and sorted by "Oldest to Newest" (this moved "How to Make Love Like a Porn Star" to the bottom of the list). 3rd down from the top was "The South vs. the South: How Southern Anti-Confederates Shaped the Course of the Civil War", which sounded really interesting, so I bought it.

Downloaded fine on my two Nook 1stEd devices, and with the Nook app on my three Android devices.

On my new Nook Touch a few minutes ago, it gave the same message as others are getting.  I rebooted it, and that solved the problem.

Re: Nook Tablet?? Disappearing from the B&N website?

I've been getting this 'Not available for the product you are using' message on all Nooks (for a new app). And after a few tries it works.
