Nook Tablet in Canada

I live in Canada and was considering buying a Nook Tablet.  I live close to the states and so I can easily get one in store.  I would like to know if the Nook Tablet will work in Canada (other then movies like netflix or hulu)?  Will I be able to download books, magazines and apps while in Canada and using a Canadian credit card?

Re: Nook Tablet in Canada

I believe the answer is yes. In Canada you can sync to and download books magazines and apps from the BN store. Here is what it says on another post by an admin: "Having a Canadian billing address and CC would not preclude a customer from placing an eBook order.  When you create an account on BN.com you can input a Canadian credit card with a Canadian billing address and save them as your defaults.  If you are living in or visiting Canada you can shop our eBook store and download eBooks to your B&N eReader supported devices, including the iPhone, iPod Touch, BlackBerry, Mac and PC. This also includes the NOOK.  Although we are not selling NOOK in Canada (or anywhere outside of the United States) at this time, if you are using NOOK in Canada you will be able to sync to your B&N eBooks library and access our eBook store via Wi-Fi (not 3G).   Your Admin., Michael-V"

Re: Nook Tablet in Canada

I had the same question, and just got out of a chat session with a BN rep. Their current policy allows purchases from inside Canada.

She told me there's no URL where this is published, but that I could cite her answer here... I guess you take what you can get.

"You need to have the following on your BN account to make purchases in Canada.

· A default credit card number (US-based or Canadian-based)
· A valid expiration date for the credit card
· A current U.S. billing address or Canadian billing address"

She gave a caveat: specific eBooks may not be accessible outside the US, and they don't have a list of those. I guess we can check a sample of the books we're interested in. Her quote:

"You may download other BN contents but it will still depend if the Bn content will be accessible outside the United States."

She did not mention Apps as being limited this way, and in fact mentioned Hulu as being covered. Hope this helps!

Re: Nook Tablet in Canada

I ended up buying my Nook.  It workds great in Canada.  The only options that do not function is Hulu which I already knew.  I can get Netflix to work since Netflix is now available in Canada.  I could not get my subscription to People magazine without a US Billing Address.  That was the only issue I found being in Canada.  My boyfriend got the Kindle Fire and he can't do anything in Canada with it other than buy books.  He can't even get apps for it.

I am very happy with ny Nook Tablet.

Nice! I have been looking into getting a nook tablet for my mom who is in Canada as well. Regarding magazine subscriptions: are you able to get other magazines to work in Canada? Or is it just certain titles like People that aren't offered?

Re: Nook Tablet in Canada

I haven't tried other magazines yet.  I was able to get the People magazine by putting a U.S. address as the billing address but still using my credit card number.  I recommend the Nook Tablet for sure, it is great and way cheaper than the Ipad.

Re: Nook Tablet in Canada

Great to know that the Nook Tablet works well in Canada.  Thanks for the info.  What I'm wondering is how you purchased it and what accessories you required?

Thanks for your help!

Re: Nook Tablet in Canada

I went and purchased it in the U.S.  You can't have it delivered to Canada.  All I got was a cover/stand and the screen protecter.

I picked one up not too long ago and it works just fine as well, with the minor caveats that Robo mentions.

Re: Nook Tablet in Canada

So you have no problems being in Canada and downloading apps onto the Nook tablet? I am wanting to make sure because I got a Kindle Fire that I just returned because I couldn't get any apps on it, free or paid, unless I had a US based credit card with a US address (which I don't). And I wasnt' going to do the "sideloading" thing that others do, and take the chance that it would wreck my Fire.

Re: Nook Tablet in Canada

I am in Canada and have no problems with my Nook Tablet downloading apps.  It works fine.  And no sideloading.  The only thing is that the app store is not as good as it could be, but i'm sure it's just a matter of time before they start getting more apps.

We don't live near the border so I ordered it from <http://www.shopereaders.com/Default.asp>.  It was a fair bit more expensive but the service was good and the order arrived recently promptly.

Re: Nook Tablet in Canada

Hey I live in Vancouver and just got my tablet as well.  I tried to download eBooks, eMagazines and apps and it won't let me and keeps telling me that I need an US address and credit card.  How were you able to access everything?  Mind shedding some light?

Re: Nook Tablet in Canada

When I first got my tablet.  I tested out the apps and books.  I was able to download with canadian address and credit card.  I did need a US address for the magazines.  I do have a mailbox in the US.  I used that address with my canadian credit card for the magazine and it worked.  I did not require a US credit card just a US billing address for the magazines.
I'm not sure what to tell you.  I had tested the books and apps before inputting my US billing address and was able to download fine.

Re: Nook Tablet in Canada

Are you using 1.41?  I still have 1.40 on my nook tablet for some reason.  I can't buy or use any B&N app/book/whatever.  So far my tablet is somewhat useless..

Re: Nook Tablet in Canada

I got my nook color in Dec/10 from my fiancé's family in Texas. Was not able to use my own Canadian credit card for purchases, I had to use his. Mid 2011 I was able to use my Canadian credit card to purchase books and apps, but not magazine subscriptions. Jan 2012 I am no longer able to use my Canadian card either on the bn website or on the nook, for any purchases. I contacted support to ask why it was no longer supported, and they told me to de-register my nook and register it again. I cannot see this solving the problem so I have not done it yet in case I am unable to re-register. Back to asking my fiancé for book money again!! I realize that this is a thread for the Tablet and not for the Color, but in the past year it seems that their policies changed... And then changed back. If anyone has any information on why this happened or when it will change back to allowing Can cards again, that would be awesome.

@mgjbtx:

Have you tried purchasing a nookbook and/or periodical directly on the website and then syncing from the nook?  Just curious as this would rule out the device causing the issue (which is the only thing erase/deregister would fix.)

Otherwise it's probably a recent change in CC rules that will hopefully get ironed out soon.

Re: Nook Tablet in Canada

I have a color Nook. And a B & N account.  We used to live in the US. We now live in Canada. I bought my Nook in MA, almost a year ago and registered it. And bought books. And downloaded books and apps.

Now we live in Canada. I am currently visiting in the US, so my IP address is US based. I just tried to download some FREE apps using my laptop. B&N sez I cannot do it because my credit card address is now Canadian, even tho' the card itself is a US card.

I'm just going to go try some free apps from the Nook itself via WiFi. I shall report back.

Re: Nook Tablet in Canada

I've bouth my nook tablet in June 2011 in the US and was quite happy with it. I live in Canada and never had any problems bying e-books or apps. But now I am suddenly no longer able to purchase anything, as I don't have a US billing address. Customer Service just told me that they changed their requirements and a US billing address is now needed. They might change it again, but couldn't give me an indication on when this is gonna happen. This is rather annoying and I regret having bought a nook tablet. :smileysad:
