Ah, yes. A "surge" to 0.85% past Amazon's 0.71%. The Samsung Galaxy Tab (family, presumably) is at 1.7%. I thought I'd read here that they were well below Amazon or B&N. Still, not much to be excited about. It's a small sample in any case.

From the Article: Aside from the traffic drop experienced by the iPad, the most notable finding was that the Nook had overtaken the Kindle Fire in Web traffic impressions. Compared with an earlier study of tablet traffic, the Kindle Fire maintained its 0.71 percent market share, while the Nook surged past the Kindle Fire with a 0.85 percent market share.

 

"In the time since that study, Barnes & Noble has launched a new advertising campaign, and their newest device sold out within weeks," Chitika pointed out. "While that device is a simple e-reader without Web browsing capabilities, the increase in Nook use may be attributed to brand familiarity through these advertisements."

 

The bar graph shown labels one bar as the Kindle Fire (not just Kindle) and another one simply as Barnes&Noble Nook. So do we know for sure that the numbers they're quoting are for just the Tablet and Color and not the entire line of Nooks? I ask because that statistic does not bear out within the circle of people I know. Almost everyone I know who has an ereader/ereader tablet has a regular Kindle or a Kindle Fire. Very few have a regular Nook or a Tablet or Color.

Wait a minute! I just re-read the article and realized it's not talking about the number of devices sold. It's talking about the number of devices used to access the web - or something like that. So the difference in the numbers quoted and what I see in within my circle of acquaintances could simply be accounted for by the difference in how the two groups use their devices. If more Tablet/Color owners use their devices for web surfing than Fire owners, then you could easily have more Nook traffic on the Web than Fire traffic.

Isn't the significance that advertisers know that nook users are out there being exposed to advertising and that the Nook brand is relevant? Anything more seems a reach.

Yeah, this is pretty much as misleading a topic as possible.

 

This has nothing to do with sales only "web impressions" apparently left on web sites from surfing activity.  It may mean something to those who target ads but it means nothing in terms of anything else.

I had posted on this same topic yesterday but nobody replied to that thread (I cried but am okay now).

 

Anyways my question there was what exactly are web impressions? I'm assuming it's something like ad clicks, but was wondering if anyone knew for sure.

 

No it is not sales, and probably only means something to advertisers.  But don't for a minute think that ad measurements are a useless metric.  I think this is actually pretty big news, especially if "Julie" is surfing the web more than the Kindle masses.

Almost everyone I know who has an ereader/ereader tablet has a regular Kindle or a Kindle Fire. Very few have a regular Nook or a Tablet or Color.

 

Almost all of my family/friends have a Nook of one sort or another and not the Kindle.  Given the small market shares for both, I think it could really make a difference who your circle of friends are.

I believe they are counting ads they serve. When the browser makes a query, they get an identifying string (User Agent -- which can be changed). They're presumably counting these strings. I have no idea whether they distinguish between individual browsers on each type, but it doesn't seem so. I run Chrome on my Samsung, Opera on my NC and NSTs. No idea how those get counted, and both can spoof desktop User Agent strings.

 

I would assume the main thing it means to those targeting ads is that Apple is still King at over 90%, and will be for some time. The next lower 10 barely hit 10%. Samsung blows the remainig 9 of these away individually in terms of magnitude, but hardly has numbers worth bragging about.
