Power Off Problem with Glow Nook

After several weeks of use my Glow Nook has evidenced some problems when I go to use the Power Off feature. About half the time, instead of turning itself off the reader simply returns me to the page I just left, usually the Home page or a page in a book I am reading.

I am wondering if others have noticed such behavior.

Are you sure you're holding the button down long enough?  It can take 20 seconds or so.

Hmmm - perhaps not. Didn't realize such a long hold down was the norm. I don't think I have changed my procedure any since my first experience with the device, but I'll give a longer hold period a shot. Thanx.

Powering off is NOT necessary.  You're not really saving any power and you're just wasting your time.

Put the device to sleep instead.  Touch the power button in the back or hold the "n" button on the front for 5 seconds until your screen-saver shows.

At that point, the Nook is in sleep mode and using almost NO power at all.  B&N says to only use the "20-second hold" if you're going to not use your Nook for weeks.

Unlike a tablet or computer, the e-ink screen doesn't use any power to "hold" an image.  You could snap your Nook in half, take out the screen, mail just the screen to your Aunt Bertha in Perth and it would arrive STILL showing the same page (and would shot it FOREVER).

Ok - guess I need to clarify a little. I was having no problem getting to the Power Off/Cancel options. It's just that when I tapped the Power Off button the Nook would revert to the previous screen about ½ the time instead of powering off. Then I tried the longer count suggestion, but only to a count of 10. This completely locked my Nook up and no effect was forthcoming from the cancel/Power Off, the n button or the power button on the back of the unit. I finally held both the n button and the power button simultaneously and this seemed to effect a reboot of the device. I guess if there is no difference in power consumption I will just go with the sleep mode option though I am curious as to why that Power Off has become cranky.

That is very odd.  I just checked and my NST(noglow) will sleep just fine from any screen.

Hopefully, someone with a Glowworm can comment.  It may be a bug in the new 1.1.5 operating system or it may be a switch problem.

I'm just asking but... is there any chance that as you grab the nook, your finger is ever so slightly hanging over the top edge near the little "book" icon?  You don't have to actually TOUCH the screen for it to think you're touching it.  The Nooks use sensors around the edge that watch; it's not really a touch-screen.

No, my fingers are not touching the screen. I often use a capacitive stick to tap pages and menu options, rather than my fingers. I can get into Sleep OK. It's the total Power Off scenario that is sometimes troublesome.

On my glowworm, either holding the power button in for ~20 seconds or hitting the "power off" when it pops up will shut the device down if the device was "awake" and unlocked when I started.

if the device is locked to start with, the "power off" button pops up very briefly, but trying to hit that button has never worked for me, no matter how fast I try to get there.

If I continue holding the power button in, the device shows the unlock screen but in fact powers off.  The unlock screen is triggered because powering it down actually wakes it from sleep, then when it shuts down, it just shuts down -- leaving the last image displayed.  I can then power it back up, but it looks as if it's crashing and starting up when what's really happening is a normal boot. 

If the screen is unlocked when I start holding the power button down, the dialog displays and I can use it to power the little guy down. 

Some of this may relate to the N button, which now has at least four functins: 

- wake from sleep (when asleep and briefly pressed)

- activate the navigation menu (when awake and briefly pressed)

- activate the light (when asleep or awake and long pressed)

- put the device back to sleep (when awake and pressed for just a bit longer. )

I think that last function is silly on a device which will go to sleep on its own and which has a light that's most readily turned on with a long press.  I have meant to turn the light on and accidentally put my device to sleep instead more than once.

Sure, when you wake your NST up from sleep, you need to slide the little slider at the bottom of the screen to have access to the interface (or at least that's how mine is set up.)

Until you slide the slider, your device is locked, as I'm using the term.   

If I hit the power button when the slider is active, the screen blinks but I can't hit the power off before the slider and screensaver redraw.

Ok - got it. Thank you very much. At the moment my GlowNook is behaving properly. Per info from another thread I did take a small brush and swipe the channel between the face of the screen and the side of the casing. Did notice two small specks that were removed. Perhaps food crumbs, but these were removed after the Nook began its to-be-expected normal behavior, so not sure if these "crumbs" were/are a factor or not. I'll know in another day or so if things are back to normal.

byter67, I have to frequently wipe the edges of my Nook Simple Touch. Much more often than I have to recharge it. For me, the symptom is that I can't unlock - the nook button activates the unlock swipe, but my swipes are not recognized. One wipe around that inside edge with a tissue and it works. It seems like a common problem due to the nature of the 'touchscreen'. Which as I understand isn't really a touchscreen at all, instead the edges have infrared signals and receivers that detect and locate an 'obstacle'. I guess enough dust can register as a permanent gesture and block recognition of any other gesture.

That is interesting and good to know. Since our bodies are continuously shedding dead skin cells, I wonder if that might have some bearing on the matter.
