You can edit your original post within about one hour, but you can't delete it, even within one minute of posting. To have almost the same effect as a delete, sometimes people will just edit their post to replace the entire text and title with the text "[Deleted]". That works pretty well for a post that starts a thread, but if you post a message as a reply in any existing thread, the initial post (without any edits) goes out immediately to everyone that has subscribed to the thread. Users can manually subscribe to a thread, or they can set an option that any threads that they post to, are automatically subscribed.
