Unsolicited sample porn books on my Nook account

I have recently been receiving a deluge of unsolicited samples of porn books on my Nook account. This issue is absolutely unacceptable for my situation, especially as I run a small private elementary school where many of my students have Nook STRs connected to my account. I would not want my students to have access to any of these books, or even see the titles for that matter. There is absolutely no chance that any of my students downloaded these books; aside from the fact that I know them all very personally, I have protected my account from purchases with a very cryptic password.

I have since changed my password to another cryptic sequence, but I am fearful that this will happen again. That's about all B&N could suggest in my situation.

Has anyone else faced this issue recently? If so, how did you deal with it?

Thanks in advance,

Aisha

Re: Unsolicited sample porn books on my Nook account

Someone either got a hold of your password or more likely, has a device that doesn't have password protect for purchases activated.
You need to get each device and check that the option is activated. If you find the one with no password protect you will have found the problem device but the culprit may be anyone who has access to the str.
There is zero chance that b & n put the samples there.
Hope that helps.

Do samples require a password?

Yes, I just tried it.

I've never had any samples downloaded to any of my Nooks.

What moogs wrote.

On my Nook Color samples require a passcode. So the most likely case is someone managed to turn off setting to require passcode on one of the STRs.

This amost certainly a prank? It is possible someone is accessing your BN account online if these samples are appearing on multiple devices or from one of your devices if a shared account. Change your online account password as well as the device password mentioned by others.

Or just knows the passcode.  They're avoiding buying because it'd show up on reports.

Change your password.  Check the NSTs for their settings.  Monitor the kids, I'm sure you know the ones more likely to do something like this than the others.  Don't buy things in front of them.  Don't make your password something they could guess.

Re: Unsolicited sample porn books on my Nook account

However it happened, the problem now is that the account has the content tied to it.  I think that means the objectionable content is gong to be offered for some time.

Why it happened?  Perhaps someone has access to the PIN, or someone guessed the account password on the main site and has triggered the association, or perhaps a web browser with a bookmark for the main site was simply left logged in and someone - on staff, even - happened to use that computer without understanding that the BN bookmark wasn't just to the site, but the site under the students' account.  If your web password might be guessable by students, change it as well.

If I were concerned about students being exposed to this stuff popping up as suggestions, I would create a new account and migrate the Nooks to it.  I would likely also look into whether a Nook HD (which supports parental controls much more than the NST does) could be used to create a profile that would control the libraries and suggestions on the NSTs.

Migrating the library will almost certainly mean you have to re-purchae any paid content.  Depending on how much doing so will cost, it may be lest painful to do it out of pocket, but could also be justified on the grounds that the account has been hacked and the repurchase on a clean account is, in essence, a security measure.

It's possible that a PM to Alex, the forum mod, would let him help you to migrate to a new school account without cost.  BN is certainly not in the business of making school budgets smaller, and your school has invested in their hardware.

Wouldn't a cheaper option be to create a new, essentially unused student account, and sideload the purchased books to them, entering the B&N DRM info (name and cc#) once per device? That same info is, apparently, already on the devices, so this doesn't seem any more objectionable. I don't think this violates any B&N ToS, and can certainly be done today at no cost. It should also protect against future mishaps of this sort. ONLY put "authorized" sideloaded content on these devices, and you'll maintain a lot more control.

Re: Unsolicited sample porn books on my Nook account

It would, but doing it that way would mean that each device would need new stuff sideloaded each time (assuming you wouldn't want to tie that account to a live shopping account going forward) - for a school deployment, being able to send content wirelessly is probably pretty helpful for the instructor.

Ultimately, the question is what's the time cost versus the dollar cost - us geeks tend to allocate time cost = 0 since we're partial to busmen's holidays. :smileyhappy:

I agree it'd be more work, but that's also a plus in a way: nothing lands on the device without manual and deliberate action.

Oh, of course! I've already been thinking about a solution using dropbox. Drop "authorized" purchases in a folder that gets synchronized to the student devices. It would require some setup, but would be more tightly controlled and more-or-less automated after initial setup. Sadly, that's more of a challenge on the NST family.

Not as slick, but would uSD cards loaded with "authorized" titles be simple enough? Or even just dragging and dropping content via USB connection?

Geez...There is no need to make the whole situation more complex than it has to be.
Get each nook, activate the password for purchase. delete the samples from each nook.
Delete(don't archive) the samples from the account...your done.

Yes, but won't the offending titles still show in the various "recommended" pages and such? The OP mentioned that even the titles would be a problem in a school.

Yes, I was thinking about the "recommended for you" problem, which I think is going to raise some eyebrows in the setting we've heard described.

Need more information.

Do you have a B2B NOOK account set up or are you using regular consumer accounts?

The Nooks are all Wi-Fi capable devices that you cannot deactivate so there is nothing that will stop a person from going to any site and scanning for adult content. In order to get ebook samples at b & n you will need an account with password.

I think moogs meant via the shop, which is true.  The NSTs have no filters at all for shopping.
