Update 1.2.1 for Nook Simple Touch

My Nook automatically installed the 1.2 update a month ago.  Yesterday, when I turned on WiFi, I saw a black screen with a white bubble saying something like Wait Updating, for an hour or so.  Today, with WiFi on, my Nook returned to the Nook Forever screen and, ten minutes later, a check of Settings | Device Info | About Your Nook revealed that Software version 1.2.1 had been installed.

On checking, I have noticed nothing new with the 1.2.1 update.  What have others noticed?

Re: Update 1.2.1 for Nook Simple Touch

That's mighty interesting, especially as the NST update page still shows 1.2 as the latest. And it still has no details about the changes in 1.2. You'd think B&N would be bragging about the improved dictionary, at least. I'll never understand why they think keeping their customers in the dark is a good strategy.

Just seconding Sun_Cat.  Odd that B&N would not put the 1.2.1 update up if it's going out to people.  The update file on the NST software updates is also the same as it was for 1.2.0 but I'm going to load it on my updated NSTG (running 1.2.0) to see if they just didn't change the name.

edit- Nope, the file on the update page does nothing for a 1.2.0 NST/NSTG (sort of suspected as much).  I'll try later today at work (one small advantadge to working at B&N is the computers there can run software updates).

I've had WiFi on since reading this post and nothing so far.  /Shrug

BN - every little software enhancement messes up my ADE connection and I have to delete folders, and register the device, power it off to get it back working.  What is BN doing that they keep making their devices WORSE instead of IMPROVEMENTS.Seriously looking into the new Kindle Paperwhite and breaking the NOOK into 100 pieces.  I have had to have my NOOK replaced 3 times already.  What gives

Re: Update 1.2.1 for Nook Simple Touch

I found that my NST updated overnight last night also.  I also cannot access my downloaded library book.  I am finding the same message as I got after the 1.2 update "User not Activated."  Now I need to go back and find out what I did to fix that last time.   ARRRRGGGGHHHHH!!!!

Even if they aren't specifying what's in a new release of firmware, you'd think it would be listed as current on the update page if it is already being "pushed" to devices connected via wi-fi.

How about the fact that the support page for the Nook Glow doesn't even have a "Software Updates" web page, despite the fact that v1.2 has been available for it, for over a month?  If a user is savvy enough to check the Nook Touch "Software Updates" web page, he/she will see that it applies to both the Nook Touch and Glow, but there is no link to that page from the Nook Glow support page.

It's there now: http://www.barnesandnoble.com/u/Software-Updates-NOOK-Simple-Touch/379003175

The name of the update file is technically incorrect:  it's named nook_1_2_update.zip; it should be nook_1_2_1_update.zip.  You can rename it (I did, because I keep it in a PC folder with the other updates) or not, before copying it to the root of your Nook's internal storage.

Re: Update 1.2.1 for Nook Simple Touch

Why do they even have a "What's new in version X?"  It always says "minor system enhancements" (aka "we're not going to tell you").

Why on earth should they tell you ?!?  Just who do you think you are ?!? :smileywink:

The WiFi subsystem now supports WiFi channels 1-13 (12 & 13 are available in Europe).

Version 1.2.0 required a minor patch to build.prop to support channels 1-13.

The power-up screensaver is still the Bronte Sisters, but as before, that can also be changed with a simple patch.

Re: Update 1.2.1 for Nook Simple Touch

Is that seriously all that's new in the 1.2.1 update?

Color me disappointed.

Oh, 1.2.0 is what was loading from work today, though that was before the 1.2.1 update was actually on the site.

I'd have liked an option to stop displaying the banner at the bottom, without having to root the device since personally I haven't seen any personal benefit besides that to rooting.

I have an iPhone for newsfeeds, web, email, etc. the NSTG really isn't meant to play games.  I dunno, are there any other benefits to rooting one of the NST/NSTG devices?

The files listed below have changed.  My guess is that most of the changes are internationalization, as B&N moves into Europe.  I only had about five minutes to test the update before I went to a dinner appt.

bobstro and roustabout may have more input, but I rooted mostly to:

  1. install a separate browser.  Believe it or not, when I took the Touch (stock v1.2.0) to a place with WiFi that had a confirmation web page, it didn't connect. It will be interesting to see if this is fixed in v1.2.1.
  2. Be able to copy my WiFi settings (ie, access point names & passwords) from one Android device to another.
  3. Get rid of the ugly start-up screen-saver.
  4. Peek around corners.

Functional browser in v1.2.1?

[ Edited ]

Mercury_Glitch wrote:

Is it my imagination, or does the included browser now work?

Edit:

Imagination: Yes.

Work: Sort of.  I can link all over the Internet, but scrolling of web pages is problematic.

Re: Functional browser in v1.2.1?

The included web browser on the (unrooted) NST always has worked, in a crippled way, but was hidden after Update 1.1.  See the last two posts in N2E-Tips-and-Tricks

I use it for Wiki when reading a non-digital book.

I suspect that even with 1.2.1 the NST unrooted will not display a confirmation screen, I'm reasonably sure that neither device ever did that when not rooted.  I haven't played around much with the refurbished NST I bought for the sole purpose of rooting.  Save to see what it could in theory do.  Which was slightly disappointing as I'd hoped for a better eReader app and found Moon+ and Aldiko less than stellar, at least the versions that would run on Android 2.1

If they took away page numbers and added browser functionality, I have serious concerns about the choices they're going to make for features in the next e-ink nook.

Actually they did, at least some of the time. I haven't tried mine recently in a coffee shop that requires confirmation, so I can't say whether the behavior has changed with the latest updates.

Regarding DeanGibson's comment on the web browser (hidden since update 1.1), scrolling generally does work, but vertical movement of the finger must be brisk and very steady.  And sometimes, when the screen is unresponsive, a slow zigzagging movement along an edge seems to revive it.  Without a Back key or bookmarking, browsing is a less than pleasant experience, but I persevere, now and then.

I don't understand.  The upper-left corner of the screen (when not scrolled) has a back button, and the bookmark button is there as well.  I've bookmarked several web pages.
