Chess!

Chess should be already installed on your Nook Color, if I remember correctly.

Three new games launched early this morning all based from suggestions in this thread -

Werdle - Find words hidden in the letter grid before time runs out

Word Twist - Spell as many words as you can with 6 letters

Row of Four - Place four game pieces in a row before your oppoent does the same

Re: What Nook Apps Would you Like?

hey ryan, just got word twist and enjoy it but wanted to mention to you directly what another person already posted in customer reviews.  the buttons do need to be more sensitive if that is, in fact, possible.  i often have to tap, say Twist, 2 or 3 times (sometimes hard) to get the letters to re-order.  same with most others but it seems especially those large buttons along the bottom (Twist, Submit, etc).  just to elaborate, the two "orange/red" submit buttons are sensitive to 1 tap but the round button on the bottom is not.  would appreciate you folks looking into this when time and adjusting it if possible.   thanks!

Thanks for the feedback! I just sent off an email explaining your experience about the tap sensitivity. We'll take a look at it :smileyhappy:

Re: What Nook Apps Would you Like?

Hi Ryan. I saw someone asked for chess and you said it is already on Nook. I dont know how to play chess but my dad doesnand he said the version on Nook is buggy. I think if you guys made a game of chess and made it 2 player and put in a small tutorial it would sell pretty well. I would buy if it had the tutorial because I have always heard chess is a few minutes to learn and a lifetime to master. You guys sell your games pretty cheap so since a rutorial would take time to add maybe make it $1.99 instead of $0.99. I got all 3 of your new games by the way. Twist werdle and four in a row. Plus checkers.

Re: What Nook Apps Would you Like?

@ryan,

sorry to say but i started out wanting to like Word Twist but it turned from a challenging word game to a hunt and peck random letter pick fest.  never in a million years would i guess "words" like BAS, DES, SAE, IDS, DEES, SABED, etc, etc, etc.  Most of these are not even in my dictionary!  there are way to many obscure words (if they are words) like this for each random letter grouping that move the game from a challenge to just guessing random letter combinations (BIS??).  there is probably nothing you can do but it would be better if there were fewer but more plausible words to decipher.

@Mack_the_Knife

The dictionary we use for Word Twist are all the SOWPOD words. It is the very dictionary that many tournament Scrabble players use.

If there are some difficult words, one hint to decipher them is to see what other words you have found in the list above the letters you are given. They are listed in alphabetical order so that will help you guess the first and possibly second letters, usually.

@ryan,

"SOWPODS is the word list used in tournament Scrabble in most countries except the USA"

since you can't purchase apps from B&N if you are outside of the USA, why did you make a B&N app based on rules from outside the USA?!

Re: What Nook Apps Would you Like?

One the the challenges with making word games is agreeing on a dictionary to use. Of the available choices, we went with SOWPODS since it the most widely recognized (many players from the USA still know SOWPODS) and because there are more permissible words to play.

For example, Here is a list of words comparing the American TWL98 and SOWPODS

Either way we went, there were some odd looking words.

All that said, I've passed along your comments to the team. I'm just wanted to explain why we made the choice we did :smileyhappy:

Re: What Nook Apps Would you Like?

ryan, thanks for getting back to me, i appreciate your time and interest.

maybe it's just me but the reason i'm not pleased with this game is there is not just SOME odd looking words, they permeate the game.  i can handle/deal with SOME odd looking words but with just one 6 letter  game, there were 18 three letter words to "guess" (not to mention 9-10 four letter words) and most (not some, most) were oddballs like IDE, BIS, BAS, IDE and the like.  what person uses those?!  you may stumble on them but then the game becomes tedious, not challenging.  just type SOMETHING in, close your eyes, and hit submit!   my simple point is there should be fewer of these odd looking words.  it should be more like 9 (not 18) three letter words to find with maybe 1 or 2 (not 12) being oddball.

that's my last comment/criticism, thanks for listening.  guess i'm just pissed cuz i wanted to use this app but it's too arcane to be stimulating..

Re: What Nook Apps Would you Like?

Ok, an update about Word Twist!

In the first update to the game, we'll  be addressing the issue where highscores aren't saving (sorry about that!), adding more sensitivity to the bottom row of buttons and including sound effects.

As far as the dictionary goes, we're still debating how best to tackle the word set so that everyone will enjoy the game but keep the challenge. If we decide to eliminate words, it won't be in the first update. Our word list is MASSIVE so going through it will be time intensive.

Re: What Nook Apps Would you Like?

sounds good, thanks for the feedback and even though i said "i'd said enough", just one last comment on whether eliminating words that mean nothing to 98.74% of the population would somehow degrade the challenge of the game.

you give us 5 letters and finding 10-12 words using those five letters is stimulating enough and often quite difficult.  WE DON'T NEED TO FIND 38 words like you make us do now so get rid of those that only the lucky few who speak fluent Navajo seem to know.

Re: What Nook Apps Would you Like?

I'd love to have a pdf reflow app that would make any pdf fit in the nook color screen without any need to pan zoom around. I have a lot of pds and for me this app is a must. Please do sth about it. Thank you.

Ario, both ezPDF and Repligo Reader offer PDF text reflow.  No panning required.  And they're available in the Nook Shop for $2 and $5 respectively.

Re: What Nook Apps Would you Like?

I haven't tested the Nook Color version of Evernote, but in the Mac version you can view PDFs. I don't know if there is the panning feature you don't want, but it is worth a look.

As for one of the apps we've developed (not related to PDF viewing) the update for Word Twist is now live. It addresses the word set issue by offering a choice of dictionary, you can now save games to play later and there are sound effects.

[ Edited ]

thanks ryan, for your team's effort in this!   just to enlighten me and maybe others, can you briefly describe the dictionary choices?  ie. does a Compact contain just a few (maybe none?!) "uncommon" words;  Normal contains just some, and the Expanded has any and all words?  thanks again for the efforts you folks have made to improve this app.
