Why isn't the Nook HD released internationally?

Practically every tablet manufacturer has released their tablets globally. The iPad and Nexus 7 are available all over the world, so why is the Nook still stuck in the US and UK? Barnes & Noble won't get much global recognition (or marketshare) if they ignore the rest of the world.

Re: Why isn't the Nook HD released internationally?

Good question.  It may have something to do with local laws (DRM), or even having to translate everything into that country's language (and some countries have more than 1 official language--Belgium and Switzerland, for example).  Ever use Microsoft Word in France?  It's surreal--you see the same icons, dropdown menus, etc, but of course commands are in French.

Re: Why isn't the Nook HD released internationally?

Mainly, it would be because B&N doesn't have a shop for each country.

Remember, the iPad and Nexus are sold mainly as general purpose tablets by companies with global subsidiaries. B&N is primarily a US-based /bookstore/, and the Nook is sold as an e-Reader (with built-in B&N shop).

Due to contracts, B&N may not be able to sell books in another country -- especially if the publisher hasn't released the print version of the book in those countries (not to mention changes like UK: Philosopher's Stone vs US: Sorcerer's Stone). B&N would have to 1) have a presence in those countries [eg; a "shop" specific to the country] and 2) obtain contracts with the publishers to match the releases of those countries. Then the Nook could be registered to the local subsidiary [determined by CC number and billing address] and access the shop. Just look at the hassles the UK release is encountering.

Re: Why isn't the Nook HD released internationally?

A lot of it has to do with international copyright.

BN can only sell content (apps, books, etc.) that it has the rights (read: contract with copyright holder) to do so. For BN's main content sales - books - the copyright holder is usually completely different. Look at Harry Potter - in the UK it is published by Doubleday, while in the US it is published by Scholastic. Here's a fun list of all the different publishers who have the rights to Harry Potter worldwide, jus... Apple a

On top of that countries often have different laws for the physical devices themselves - what kind of materials can be used in their construction, recycling, wireless band usage, etc. And then there are other considerations, such as privacy and credit card laws (for example, the UK NOOKs are prohibited by law from asking for a default CC during the registration process, they have to do so after the device is fully registered).

International sales aren't easy. Even Amazon only sells their tablet in a couple countries.

Re: Why isn't the Nook HD released internationally?

All of the hurdles mentioned in the other posts are true.  Once again those other companies have been in the international market for much longer than B&N has been.  But it is soon changing.  UK was the first step, and here's an article posted last October about the future of Nook International:

I can't find the article right now, but I also remember reading that there was an International liason, or some such title, hired around that time based out of Germany.

Adding to Schwa's data points

1) Nook already out in the UK.

2) Someone in Germany found a store with Euro prices for B&N books. Suggested Nook is arriving in Germany soon.

3) HD+ Guide has a page about approval for EU. Similar to FCC clearance, but for EU.

4) HD+ Guide has a page about approval for Canada. Similar to FCC clearance, but for Canada.

5) B&N has said it will expand to 10 international markets in future. Don't know if B&N meant in 2013 or in 2013-2015.

Now with investment from Microsoft and Microsoft's partnerships and expertise to leverage B&N has a better shot at expanding internationally.

The caveat - Nook sales in UK might not have been good. There was someone on the forums from UK and he told me that most UK B&N retail partners don't even display Nook HD and HD+ on shelves.

Additionally, Amazon hasn't released the new Kindle Fires in UK yet. So B&N is a bit ahead in terms of releasing its newest eReaders to UK.

It's way behind Apple and Samsung etc. Those however are technology companies which have been doing this forever. Apple has been selling computers since 1976. B&N just got into tablets in late 2010.

Amazon is supposed to be targeting China. If it does get there soon, then that'll give it a massive advantage over B&N.

Re: Why isn't the Nook HD released internationally?

If I recall correctly, Dean pointed out that the only new feature that was clear in the 1.2.1 NST/G update was support for european wifi channels.  I suspect this is in part for the UK, but also for future international goals.  Remember 1.2 was the updated that created the banner overlay, which is speculated to be due to the ease of scripting a language change based on the region selected when registering the Nook.

This is an area where from what we can see B&N is making all the right moves to get more customers.

Also worth mentioning that the packaging for all new NOOK accessories has instructions printed in 6 language on them (English, French, Spanish, Dutch, German, and I believe Portuguese).

Spanish, on its own, may not imply that much -- they could have been targeting the US Hispanic market.

Spanish and French could also just mean intent to expand over both US borders (Mexico and Quebec/Canada)

Adding in German, Dutch, and Portuguese could be a prelude to EU release (hmm, do EU members follow a unified publishing rights system, or are those still per country?)

Since the UK is a member of the EU, I have to imagine it's on a per country basis.

Re: Why isn't the Nook HD released internationally?

The UK is a special snowflake when it comes to EU politics.

But anyway... For books in particular it's still a country by country basis.
