It's nice to hear that they're acknowledging the problem, but it does concern me that many knowledgeable users have apparently used "too much pressure". It doesn't sound very robust. I think I'll hold off until this issue is addressed. I don't want to be a few days out of warranty when the improved model hits the street.

Two of mine were bad right out of the box, before I even used them. Can't blame that on the end user.

Until there is a way to graft a diffusion grating into Gorilla Glass this is simply going to be a fact of life. Be careful with your devices, eh.

To me, though, this sounds like a product rushed to market.  What's B&N's long term plan for all the returned devices?  And what's a user supposed to do if regular use (i.e. tapping the screen) can cause damage?  It just seems a bit poorly thought out.

As the person who dropped her old Blackberry a zillion times and never broke it, but once dropped her Galaxy S2 (with Gorilla Glass) and shattered the screen on that single solitary drop, I don't know that even Gorilla Glass is the answer.

My Galaxy S3 lives in a very protective case now.  :smileywink:

Try tapping the screen instead of hitting it with a club? :smileywink:

In all seriousness, these "holes" (not what they are in the least, but whatever) are caused by blunt force deforming the glass enough that the diffusion grating doesn't work correctly. If you're careful with the device you will be fine. Normal wear and use shouldn't cause issues. If it does, BN will handle it (just like they did the page-turns on the 1st Edition).

As with any first-generation technology, there's going to be growing pains. It comes with the territory of being an early adopter.

Blunt force doesn't explain out of the box failures.

I've never used 'blunt force' and mostly use the side buttons to change pages.

And if 'blunt force' means 'lightly touching the 'touch screen'" - B&N needs to re-evaluate their manufacturing process.

Funny thing, I've checked a couple in store - ones that get beat up by ever kid that walks by - and they had zero  'bright spots'.

The defects seem totally random.

All that said, I love my NSTG, and my 4th one is just fine.

Re: defective glowlight screen

Too many problems posted on these screens steered me away from the Glow nook.  I sprang for the 16 GB tablet when they offered the $50 gift card.  Now B and N just lowered the price of the Nook Color.  It looks like the Glow Nook is on its way out.

I hope not. Though the color screens are beautiful, they're simply not as good for outdoor reading. The units are also cumbersome compared to the NST, and offer nowhere near the battery life. The NST/NSTG are niche devices that fill a specific need very well. If they get the kinks on the screen technology worked out, I may well pop for one if nothing better has come along to fill that same niche.

I'm not following your logic.  The NSTG is a completely different device from the Color/NT, and AFAIK it's the flagship e-ink nook.  Why do you think the lowering of the tablet nook prices means anything for the e-ink devices?

Strange, Consumer Reports named it the best ereader of 2012, which makes 2 years in a row for the Simple Touch line.  A few complaints on a support forum is not realy indicative of a widespread problem.

(fun Consumer Reports fact: Kindle Keyboard is ranked higher than their current Kindle Touch line, LOL).

Re: defective glowlight screen

I like e ink readers, I own a wi fi Kindle keyboard that I bought just as the wi fi only models were on their way out.  But I was always looking for a light source to read under and thought I'd love the Glow Nook.  They are cool, but just not as crisp as the non lighted nooks.  Looking at a price of $139 for the Glow and $169 for the Color would steer me to the Color.  Now, if they managed to get the Glow screen to be equally crisp as the original model I would have bought the Glow Nook.  I guess we'll see what the price does for the lineup.

Re: defective glowlight screen

[ Edited ]

I just went to my local Barnes and Noble store and played around on the ST Glow unit on display. Very nice unit. I turned on the light and did not see any "holes" in the screen. I figured if their display model doesn't have any issues after being handled who knows how many times, then the device should be pretty solid.

The only thing that I noticed was that the memory says 750 mb of 750 mb available. My 1st edition has 2 gigs as well but a lot more available space. Almost double. The internal memory shows 1.3 GB of space. Why is there such a difference in amount of available space?

Re: defective glowlight screen

i went to the other local B&N store here in town a couple of days ago and was talking to the Nook expert and was asking about the "holes" that people are reporting. She said that she has seen some come back and they were replaced. I made a comment about trying out the display model and the screen looks nice and that I didn't notice any holes or problems with the unit. I asked her about why B&N says not to put another screen protector on the unit and she said she didn't know since B&N said to put them on the display models. So the display models have an extra screen protector on them so the tears or holes do not show up while people are messing around with them. Very interesting.

Re: defective glowlight screen

So is the NSTGL a good unit to get or if I do get one will I end up returning it for a replacement? The screen problem seems to be really hit and miss. Is it much more common than a few compared to probably a big number of units sold? I would really like to upgrade from my Nook 1st edition but if it is not worth it then I will continure to use what I have.

Re: defective glowlight screen

I have been happy with the switch.  The glowlight is worth it.  I will put up with the bright spot on mine to have the glowlight.  Plus the battery life is WAY better than the N1E.

Do you have a spot on yours? If so, how long did you have the unit before it developed? Is it really that distracting with the light on?
