Re: defective glowlight screen

Barnes and Noble has a protection plan too. 1 yr standard warranty already comes with the Nook. That would cover any malfunction parts, and there's an extented protection plan for 27.99 that covers an extra year of that plus 2 years of any accidently damage. (Pretty much anything but lost or stolen).

I do believe that with Best Buy you get a new nook, but with B&N you get a refurb.  Not 100% sure on that, though.

Re: defective glowlight screen

I went to bed reading my Nook with Glowlight with no problems on the screen, when I woke up this morning I noticed a small crack or what I thought was a crack. When I turn on the glow light it really illuminates through that tear. There is no surface damage at all, so I am guessing this is the same issue as everyone else is having and it is a tear somewhere underneath the screen.

I chatted with B&N support and the rep was great. I am pretty sure she knew instantly what it was, as she used the word defect and offered to ship me out a replacement right away. I did have to give my credit card number, but she assured me that I would only be charged if I didn't return the defective Nook.

I upgraded from the Nook first generation and while I LOVE the upgrade of the battery life, size, weight, and most of all the light, I am not sure I want to continue to experience these problems. Lets hope that the replacement doesn't end up with the same problems.

Re: defective glowlight screen

....and Nook # 4 has a defect. Awesome. Small pixel size light dot bleeding through. In an area where I don't even touch that often. I've kept it in the case, made sure not to harm it. I am really bummed out, because I love the glowlight. Part of me wonders if it's dust or something, if not, this is a terribly thought out idea.

Not sure what to do. I could just get the Simple Touch at this point, or even a Kindle, which honestly, I don't want to do, I like the Nook design much better.

I think I'll email B&N and see what they have to say. I can't keep swapping them out at BB.

Re: defective glowlight screen

I had this same issue with 5 different Nook glowlights (all from Best Buy). By the time I got my fifth replacement the girl was looking at me like I was nuts. Its a small little pixel sized dot on the screen that you can only see with the glowlight on. The glowlight I have right now has one as well but I kind of gave up on switching them. Now I've kind of noticed that when I have my glowlight on and read in a dark room some of the text seems much thicker than the rest of the page. It happens on every page I'm on with the glowlight on. Is anyone else experiencing this problem?

Re: defective glowlight screen

B&N does give a certified pre-owned after the 1st 30 days. I don't see this as a bad thing though. The CPOs have to go through way more checks before they reach the customer. You are more likely to get something that works correctly that way. My whole family has Nooks (8 total) of different varietys, and half of them are CPO. We've never had any  issues with the CPO units, while some of the new-box units have had to be replaced.

It's like some letters are darker/thicker than others. It is annoying. The contrast is way worse than my first and I could deal with that but I hate the inconsistency. It's inconsistent even in a letter. Like the top half of a letter is darker/thicker than bottom half. And some letters of a word are like that and some words out of a line. It's just odd! I'm planning on going to the store and seeing if the display looks better so I can compare and show a sales associate. I really want it replaced now. So annoyed my first nook died and it didn't have this problem.

Re: defective glowlight screen

It's frustrating. I love the glowlight feature but I'm considereing returning to the NST and waiting to see if they address these issues with next years model refresh of the NSTG. I'm just a bit dissapointed that B&N no longer provides the power adapter with the purchase of the NST.

Re: defective glowlight screen

I am on my third glow now because the last two had glowing pixels on the screen. Also randomly the next page buttsom doesn't respond no matter how many times I push it.  My husbands glow locks up on the screen saver all the time and he has to reboot his.  My friend has already had to exchange hers because of a glow spot. I have had a nook since the orgional 3g came out. We also have two tablets with no problems.  My next step is to go back to a tablet for night reading and have a simple touch for outside reading.  Very frustrating and feel B and N rushed putting the glow out before testing the design.

Re: defective glowlight screen

This my third one as well. The first had an awful grey screen. Second had the pixel issue with the glowlight on. The 3rd just developed this as well. Luckily I bought it from Target and I still have to 7/23 to return. I think I'm going back to the regular Nook. I have babied this and 2 have developed this problem.

Re: defective glowlight screen

I am wondering if there is a way to fix it yourself.  Clear Finger Nail polish?  Who's the brave one who wants to try it?  :smileylol:

Don't really try it.  Seriously, I think it would turn out very bad...

My first reaction would be to put a screen protector on it, but B&N specifically says not to. Not sure what to do. I'm holding off on any NSTG purchases for the time being.

That is usually the first thing I do.  I wonder what happens when a protector is put on them.

I have one of the spots on mine, but it isn't bothersome, unless it gets bigger, so right now I am good with it.  The Glowlight is awesome, and I will take that trade-off.

My guess, having not tried it, would be that the new screensaver would stick to the existing screensaver/surface and either (a) cause too much of a barrier, making text less clear, or (b) if you then tried to remove the new screensaver, it might pull off the existing screensaver/surface of the screen.

Keri writes "(a) cause too much of a barrier, making text less clear, or (b) if you then tried to remove the new screensaver, it might pull off the existing screensaver/surface of the screen."

I bet both of these are true and emerged during internal testing.  I also think that the built in screen protector has some surprising propensity to showing damage that in other settings would be invisible, and that didn't emerge in testing.  Unfortunately, it's being used as a light guide and so even really minor damage is, ah, highlighted :smileyhappy:

Mine hasn't developed a hotpsot yet, but it may well be a yet, with this generation of the devices prone to issues - whether from actual cracks or from tiny separations between the built-in screen protector and the underlying e-ink display.

So many of the reports mention that there's no actual screen surface damage that I do wonder if this is the result of something like separation under the glow surface. I'm definitely holding off on buying one until this issue is better understood.

If it was caused by an actual scratch on the screen, I wonder if a bit of clear wax rubbed in might get rid of the hotspot effect. Of course, every one of these devices are still under warranty, so there's no need to resort to DIY fixes just yet.

Re: defective glowlight screen

I'm guessing that B&N knew about the bright spot problem but didn't think it would be such an issue with readers. I wonder if at some point they'll treat it as normal to have some number of spots and refuse replacements.

Re: defective glowlight screen

# 4 is holding up pretty well. The only spot I can detect is if I turn the light to 100% and look in a totally dark room. That's being a little silly, at the level I keep the light, I can't see it at all.

Fingers crossed.

Re: defective glowlight screen

My new Nook just got the glow spots this evening. B&N is more than willing to replace these defective Nooks right away, but how long can they possibly keep this up? I really like the glow feature, but I cannot keep replacing them every three weeks! B&N really needs to get on top of this and fix whatever is causing the problems on the screen.

Sigh....

Re: defective glowlight screen

I had this happen to mine this week. I took it to my local B&N to exchange it, which they did with no problems. The manager was the one helping me & she showed me what these bright spots are & how they happen. They are a result of damage to the under underlayer of the screen protector that is how the light is diffused throughout the whole screen. They happen when too much pressure is applied to the screen & another screen protector will not help prevent them. Being careful & using a cover for your NST w/GL that has a hard cover is the best protection.
