Hi there,
I'm just wondering if anyone else found this. I bought a new nook simple touch about 2 days ago. I found that the page buttons on the side would sometimes work and sometimes not work....mostly not working....
I've turned the thing off and back on, it will work. Then when I put the nook on standby and wake up the nook to read, the buttons don't work. Sometimes I randomly turn it back on after the buttons have not worked in a while and then they start working again.
Is there a way to fix this or do I have to go return the nook?
Thanks,
Louise

If you are not, you have to press in the center of the bar for the buttons to work.

Did that in all parts of the button and no response. Now the buttons have reversed for page forward and page back (when they are working).

I've been having the same problem ever since the update (at least I hope the update caused it), but I found the instead of turning my Nook STR completely off/on to get it to work again...I just hit the "N" button twice and they work again...go figure. ![]()

You probably know that you can turn pages just by touching the screen on the right or left side (you may have reasons for not wanting to do it this way). I've gotten into the habit of touching the lower right corner to move forward; it's become an automatic gesture.
If nothing avails in fixing the problem, remember that you're still under warranty. Before you get too invested in this particular one, I'd return it for a replacement.
Good luck

The reason I bought the nook simple was because it had the buttons as well as the touch unlike the kindle. It still works to turn pages on the touch screen but I don't really want to have a new product that doesn't 100% work properly. I might just return it....sigh

I've seen this happen more and more frequently recently, and I've formally reported the issue in the Issue Reporting board. If anyone else would care to elaborate on the symptoms and workarounds, please post a comment over there. Thanks.

I haven't had any problems with the buttons not working, but I wished they were easier to push. My old Kindle keyboard was much easier to push the buttons.

I have the same problem and I guess it's a firmware thing...
Like someone else mentioned here, I hit the n button on the bottom, once to pull up the menu and once to close it and the buttons work again.
My guess is it's something that shuts off when you come out of sleep mode and doesn't reengage when you comes out. Would be nice if they fix it but now knowing that I only have to tap the n button twice makes it easier to deal with.
Before I knew about the n button thing, I would go into the n menu, then settings, then reader and tap it there, I am guessing that did nothing and the real reason it worked again was because I would open the menu.
Oh and another tip. I use to hold do the n button to put it in sleep mode. Now I discovered that if you just tap the on off switch, it goes into it immediately.
One thing I wish they would do is give you the option of a real off switch, where there is nothing on the screen at all. Not sure if this is only me but there is always something on my screen, even if I shut it down completely, I still see the nook logo. My guess is it's not draining power in this state and I'm guessing there is no danger or screen burn in but being use to computer screens, I can't help but be a bit paranoid about it.

Jordan,
Welcome to the forum where a lot of us paranoids hang out.
You are correct, a screen uses power when it refreshes/changes, not when it's just sitting there.
But, it's easy to create a custom screensaver. If you don't like something always there, you can make a new screensaver folder with just one screen. Make it black or white, or whatever color best represents "nothing". The User Manual explains the details; I zapped the Bronte Sisters very early on!

Eink doesn't work like LCD/LED. Since the screen isn't backlit, it won't matter if it displays the same image for ten minutes, ten hours or ten days; there's no chance of burn in.
Eink works sort of like an Etch-A-Sketch. Millions of microcapsules full of white and black particles with positive and negative charges make up the display. When an electromagnetic current is applied ("turning the page") the appropriate white or black particles are forced to the top creating the text. (It's technically not magnets like the Etch-a-Sketch was, it's electrophoresis, but close enoug for government work as the saying goes.)
Displaying an image uses no power, (however the processor et al are still consuming power) only chaning the image...
It was hard for me to wrap my mind around, and I do miss the completely off / blank screen that was possible with the N1E a little, just because I'm a bit OCD about odd things, but if battery life is your reasoning you can be at ease. ![]()

I have to shake my head and laugh at Barnes & Noble. Just today I called tech support for this very problem. They had clearly never heard of it and determined that my Nook was defective so I just got home from the store with my replacement Nook, set it all up and guess what? Same problem!
Based on your excellent suggestions, here's a summary of what works for me.
Holding the nook button down to put into sleep mode and then waking causes all page buttons to fail.
Double tapping the nook button, brings page turn buttons back to life.
Tapping the power button once to put the nook to sleep and then waking up does NOT cause buttons to fail.
Letting the Nook fall asleep on its own does NOT cause buttons to fail.
So B&N could have saved some money by not replacing my Nook if they had just searched this forum while I was on the phone. I guess I could have searched too but there were other erratic issues with my Nook so I'm glad I'm starting with a new one. Plus they let me add the extended warranty to this one, so I'm happy.

It's not just B&N and doesn't read their own boards. The Apple "Genius" at their store was about to completely replace my daughter's 2-week-old iPhone today because it was not opening some apps.
But, "google is my friend" and it I found post after post covering years. It turns out the phones get confused when you hook them up to a computer that has iTunes registered to a different ID. 10-second-fix; go to the app store and try downloading any app.
I wonder how many phones we would have gone through if I hadn't found the answer.

I have had my Nook about a Week now and have been having the same issue with the page turning buttons not responding at all after i come out of sleep mode. I have found if i go into the page turning button setting and change it around and back to orgininal settings it starts working perfectly. Have to do this each time though. Other than that loving my Nook =)

After reading over 100 books on my NST I never noticed this problem. That's because I never put it to sleep by holding down the NOOK button. If I want to put it to sleep (rather than simply letting it put itself to sleep), I press the power button. It's faster, and it doesn't cause the problem with the page turn buttons.

The problem is, with some covers attached, the power button can be difficult to press; the "n" button is easier. However, when holding down the "n" button to put the device to sleep, I didn't see this particular problem, but there was some other problem (I don't remember what it was), so I've also reverted to using the power button to sleep the device.

You don't have to go that far.
Just press the "n" to get the main menu and then press it again to make the menu go away. Your buttons will start working again.
