can someone please tell me with all honesty before I buy it how well you can read the nook tablet in bright sun light? I've been reading all the reviews, but none really seem to tell me if there is a lot of glare or is it hard to read. I spend a lot of time on the beach reading books, but I want more than an e-reader, so the simple nook is not an option.

I find it impossible to use any LCD screen with full sunlight falling on it.
That said, I find it possible to use a 7" LCD screen on a sunny day by adjusting my position such that it's shaded, either by me or by its cover (I use a book-style cover.) But I prefer the e-ink to the LCD in bright light.
Also, if you wear polarized glasses, try the NC or Nook Tablet in both portrait and landscape orientation with your lenses. Both the screen and the glasses are polarized; a LOT of folks have reported that their sunglasses completely wipe out visibility in portrait mode, but permit use in landscape mode. Since the tablet supports reading in both modes, you may find that with polarized lenses, it works acceptably in sunlight. If you can get someone at a local shop to let you walk outside with one, that would be ideal.

opinions vary...best thing i did was go to the B&N and one of the sales associates walked out of the store with a NC to show it to me in the sunlight. Also, do you read a lot in the sunlight?

I read my nook color in full sunlight. I put a Nook anti glare screen on it and put brightness all the way up. I do wear glasses that darken in the sun but they are not polarized.

Yep that is what I did and read fine if I watch my angles and shoot for shade when possible. Some will still not prefer it. As comes down to personal acceptance of readability. I don't have problems and even prefer night mode black page white letters reading in sunlight.
And you have 14 days to return so schedule buy during a sunny day and test for you.

No you can't read in the direct sunlight. I tried yesterday but considering I still have my black and white nook which I use in the sunlight I just swap them out for what I need. Works for me! ![]()

Did you have the brightness cranked all the way up? I and several others have found the brightness quite adequate in direct sunlight.
Acer Iconia A500 (two): Android 4.0.3 rooted;; Nook Color: B&N 1.4.3 rooted
Nook Touch (two): B&N 1.2.1 rooted; Nook 1stEd/3G (two): B&N 1.7.0 rooted.
Customer loyalty is earned, not commanded or deserved, and easily lost.
Nothing is foolproof, because fools are so ingenious. Same for rooters.

I don't do this very often but when I do I have had success. I switch to night (black with white text) and move the brightness up until it's comfortable for me.
I'd say for anyone who reads a lot in the sunny outdoors and is not overly interested in apps and web access, go with a simple touch. They're fabulous too!
