why won't my bookmarks stay put? (N2E issues)

I realize it probably doesn't look all that great to be yet another person with only 1 or 2 posts to their name, coming in here and immediately complaining about my new device. But I've looked around and can't really find any answers elsewhere, and apparently there are BN folks that look at this board that might actually know something or at least take note, so...

Just replaced my "classic" Nook last week with a Nook Simple Touch. I was so excited! I'd tried it out in the store, read the forums, read reviews, etc. I'm a total nook fangirl, so my disappointment isn't just arbitrary, here.

I realize that the Nook is a BN device, and therefore they want to 'encourage' as much money flowing through their ebook stores as possible. But it really stinks that it wasn't stated more clearly in the documentation that the only books that get the nifty "social features" and organization are still books bought through the BN store. Yes, you can merge everything to "view all," but that's *really* "VIEW ALL," as in, it includes jpgs for screensavers, etc. And it's really not friendly to the eyes the way it's laid out.

But I digress. Like I said, as much as I think it stinks that they did that, I get it - they're interested in getting owners to buy their books more than sideloaded content. Fine, whatever.

But when it comes to actually using my N2E as a reader, it's turning out to be a clumsy experience. Really clumsy. As in, "reading now" never shows the right information - always just "pg 1" of whatever book I'm in. And if I leave the book I'm currently reading to look at my library or "home," when I go back, it puts me right at page 1 again.

What's that you say? Use the super-convenient bookmark function? Yeah, well, that only works if I fiddle around with it. My bookmarks mysteriously disappear if I try to re-enter my current book from the home screen (and I'm put back at the cover page again). The only way they RE-appear is if I go into the book, then hit the home-button, then go into settings, then hit the little book icon in the upper left corner of the screen, then touch the screen to go to the book menu, then access the content and bookmarks list from there.

Maybe this is just a flub that's limited to sideloaded content, but frankly, I'm having trouble understanding the logic in punishing people with lots of sideloaded content like this. I guess BN isn't interested in gaining new nook owners from other e-reader markets?

Sorry, I know this wound up bordering on an introductory rant. I'm just really, really bummed and frustrated at this point, which is only compounded by the fact that I wanted to be as in love with my N2E as I was with my Classic, which is now under the ownership of my sweet husband who gave this to me as a gift. :smileysad:

Do you copy your books to the "my files\books" folder?

Because than you will see them in your regular books library. And at least with my Nook Touch the last page read is remembered correctly.

I have them on a separate SD card. I wonder if that's where the glitch is?

Re: why won't my bookmarks stay put? (N2E issues)

Sorry if this info is in your message, but I can't find it.

1) How many books are you having this problem with?

2) How did you get the book onto your Nook?

3) Are there any books that ARE working fine?

Give us as much info as you can (sort of step by step) and you get help.

I had a sideloaded book that wasn't working, I had loaded it using Calibre and all the other sideloaded books WERE working fine.  Then, I noticed that it was the only title with "The" in the name.

In the Metadata screen of Calibre, I changed the "sort" field from "Book, The" to "Book The" (removed the comma) and everything started working.  Calibre was making the file name with the comma and the Nook didn't like it.

Yes, that's a bug, but it's an easy one to avoid.

Re: why won't my bookmarks stay put? (N2E issues)

Hi,

I have never seen anything like this on my Nook touch. Just like you, I've switched from Nook 1st generation to Nook touch and so far, I have not had any serious issues with any of my books. However, it would be nice to see more detailed steps of the problem from you.

- Was the device sleeping before you went to "home" to re-open your book?

- What directory did you transfer your book to? Was it on External SD card?

- Did you change any font settings before going to "home" and re-opening your book?

- Did you make any highlights/notes before going to "home" or "library" or "settings"?

- What about your purchased books, do you see the same issue when re-opening any of them?

Re: why won't my bookmarks stay put? (N2E issues)

[ Edited ]

Thanks for trying to help me troubleshoot this!

This is all side-loaded content, and on an SD card. I use Calibre to manage my sideloaded content, and I can't find an overall metadata setting that matches what you're describing. The books that I've had this problem on don't have a comma in the Title Look-Up field (the current book I'm reading has only one word in the title).

I have not changed any font settings on the books this happens to, nor did I make any highlights or notes. I started bookmarking because this was happening, but then the bookmarks appear and disappear depending on how I access the book.

After fiddling around with it, here's what I've narrowed it to:

If I'm reading the book and close it, when I go to "home" and re-open the book from the "Reading Now" icon, it forgets everything and takes me back to page 1. Somewhere, somehow, at some point, I managed to get it to remember *one* bookmark in that scenario. But that one bookmark would *only* appear if I accessed the book from "Reading Now." But sometimes it would open up to chapter 3 instead.

If I'm reading the book and I close it, then I access it from the Library, it seems to remember my place, as well as the bookmarks I've left.

I had a LOT of confusion about this, because depending on how I accessed the book(s), it would either not remember where I was in the book, or it would remember "wrong," and there were two versions of my bookmarks, depending on how I opened my books.

So, I think by fiddling with it, I've figured out how to handle it, but the fact of the matter is that it's a bug. And if someone's converting to Nook from a different e-reader or just from reading on their computer, this is a really disorganized and frustrating issue. I'm technically inclined and got used to how I'd organized my old nook, as well as how I had my system for loading via Calibre. (btw, more info on any plug-ins that might help would be greatly appreciated!) My point is, I'm pretty technologically savvy, usually, so this was even more frustrating to me.

Another concern is that several side-loaded books aren't showing their thumbnail covers. Any idea how to tweak that? I can't find a pattern to it, or a common trait that would give me a clue on that one.

My apologies, too, if I'm being redundant. I did poke around and search topics, at least on the matter of my bookmarks disappearing. But it's a huge board and I might have been looking in the wrong place (says the person claiming to be technically savvy...)

(edited because I did more searching :smileytongue: :smileywink: )

Hi,

I'm glad to see that at least you narrowed down the problem. Do you mind telling me if that problematic content of yours is an EPUB or PDF?

EPUB. Even my pdfs I usually convert them to epub.

Re: why won't my bookmarks stay put? (N2E issues)

I received my N2E last week and initially encountered the same problem with my side-loaded content. Bookmarks and "Reading Now" was working for me once (and still was functional for the Manual for example) and failed on every other side-loaded content I tried. Finally I deleted all books and transferred them again using Calibre. As far I can tell bookmarks and "Reading Now" are working correctly after doing this even with sideloaded books on a SD card....

Re: why won't my bookmarks stay put? (N2E issues)

There must be something different that you are doing that results in the loss of last viewed page and bookmarks. I don't have such issues on my device. It's really interesting though, why some of the users see this issue and some (like myself) don't. In my understanding, you guys do the following:

- insert SD Card with all transferred books (transferred using Calibre)

- go to Library, select desired book and tap on it to open

- the book opens

- you go through few pages and press the "nook" key to go to Home

- when in Home, you tap on Reading Now to open the same book

- same book opens, but on the cover page

Are the steps above correct?

Yikes.  If I was experienced your faulty bookmark problem with sideloaded content, I too would be peeved.

The bookmarks are working fine on my N2E sideloaded content, which makes me wonder if it would help to reset your Nook and start over.

Until the update i had no troubles with bookmarks from books on my sd card and since the update its been a headache. I think the update may have corrupted something in the bookmark settings

Re: why won't my bookmarks stay put? (N2E issues)

I bought my Nook Simple Touch on Black Friday, and I have been having the same problem with my "Reading Now" book. With the last two books I have read on my Nook, everytime I would try to open them to the last page read, instead it would take me back to page 1. These books were purchased from B&N, and I have no SD card to speak of. Thankfully, I have a B&N store close by to me, so I am going to try and get some technical support there. Also, a new update is available and hopefully that will take care of some of the bugs (such as this one) affecting Nook Simple Touch.
