Frank McCourt. It's his memoir of him growing up in abject poverty in Ireland.
Rory Stewart. It's his memoir of his year-long trip walking on foot through Afghanistan. He knew no one, had little money, and was at the mercy of strangers in small tribal villages.
Greg Mortensen. A wonderful memoir of a man who builds schools for children in the Middle East.
"I am a part of everything that I have read."

I know it was published ages ago , but I really enjoyed The Glass Castle. I've also recently read a thoroughly wacky but beautifully written book by Susie Boyt about her obsession with Judy Garland. I'm not a JG fan but the book very funny and revealing about celebrity and being a fan.
