As much as we'd love to think that Mr. Ashford was real, and that Jane's romance with him actually happened, he is an imaginary character. Many other plot elements and characters in this novel, however, were based on fact. When reading this novel, did you learn anything new or surprising about Jane Austen's life? If so, what?

I have never read any of the biographies about Jane's life, only the short bio found in the B&N editions. I didn't realize how similar her situation was to Elinor's and Marianne's after her father had died.

I have always daydreamed about what she would be like and I think Syrie James has done a marvelous job defining her characterics as I would think she would have. You already know she was brilliant because of her writing. Her letters she wrote to Cassandra tell of a thoughtful, compassionate person that seemed to be full of heart. Also, she seemed likable by her acquaintances and of course her family.
