Any comments, thoughts, or responses to author J.R. Ward's books The Black Dagger Brotherhood?

What are some views and comments on author J.R. Ward and her Black Dagger Brotherhood series ? Being a fan of LKH's Anita Blake books, the first five books were mysterious, exciting and fun to read. Then the books felt as though she was repeating her past work. And where there is absolutely nothing wrong with explicit adult content in the vampire erotic works, Ms. Hamilton stories were starting to read like cheap porno that is found in a two dollar skin mag. It was irritating and sad that she took a strong upstanding heroin with underlying strong religious beliefs that was Anita Blake and turned her into a sexually starved whore who slept with any supernatural character for self fulfillment.

Hearing about Ms. Ward online and skimming through her books, it was finally great to see a writer who put a new twist on the vampire myth. Her books are intense and emotionally powerful stories, but also colorful, dangerous, and richly conceived. The world she has created is filled not only romance and erotica, but perilous adventures as well. Fans who already read the series know that The Black Dagger Brotherhood promises to hold readers with mystery and supernatural intrigue and not have to rely on cheap sex scenes for shock value and to keep readers interest.

Re: Any comments, thoughts, or responses to author J.R. Ward's books The Black Dagger Brotherhood?

Though I do not agree of your assessment of Laurell K Hamilton's work, I will focus on your subject of the Black Dagger Brotherhood series.

I have enjoyed this series from the beginning and I think it getting stronger with every book.  The early books followed what I will call the romance format with the focus on the couple of the book.  I have heard complaints from fans that, as she has moved further into the series, she dedicates less of the book to the couple and incorporates more of the happenings of the other characters.  To me, this is what I think is making the books stronger and more cohesive as a series verses individual books around a similar theme.  This is why so many fans are invested the character John.  His voice has been present through several books and fans have been able to watch him grow.

I find this series to be daring and really like Wards exploration of the different ways in which people relate to one another as friends and as lovers.  She has been unafraid to tackle an array of topics including sexual preference and interest.  And she has done it in a way that is respectful and offers the chance for understanding of the different ways in which we love.  This too has been an area in which I have read criticisms of this series.  And I, for one, am happy the books have opened up a dialog on these issues.

But, when you get right down to it, this is just a great series with a truly unique take on vampires and their place in the world in which Ward has built.  I always look forward to reading the next book!

I've had all of her books for a while...can't wait to read them!  :-)  I have read all of the Anita Blake and Merry Gentry books...the sex does take over some of the books but it never really bothered me. <shrug>

I'm not a big fan of paranormal romance, but even I have read and enjoyed the Black Dagger Brotherhood books. Recently I haven't kept up with the series, but I believe I'll eventually read all the books.:smileywink:

Teresa, I really think you'll like this, even though the sex is prevalent I think it's an important part of the stories as they are romances, but this is a more character driven series and very different from LKH, these bad boys are in love with street slang, rap and booze.
