I got Ghost Story on Monday and read till I fell asleep and then finished as soon as I woke up on Tuesday. I think that this may of been the best Harry Dresden. I especially liked the ending with Harry and Mab having there confrontation. I am sure that I will be rereading this book.

Mab was probably one of the people I would have least expected to be there when Harry woke up. I imagine that's probably kind of naïve of me, since she has more of a vested interest in Harry than just about anyone else does. However, I think I was holding out hope that if he actually did wake up, he would be in the presence of someone he has a positive relationship with. Perhaps Molly or Thomas would have been there. I don't know. That said, I was not disappointed...I absolutely loved how Harry told her how it was gonna be. I'm glad to see that he won't be taking crap from her as the Winter Knight.
Oh...and I am so happy that this book made it to #1 on the Barnes & Noble Bestsellers list this week!

I, too, kept reading right on through until way too late into the night, and now my daughter has run off with my copy.
Did I miss it, or do we not know what happened to Bob and Evil Bob? As best I recall, they were still fighting when the Way closed behind Harry and his crew, and I don't remember hearing anything more about them before the end of the book.

Ooooh. I didn't even catch that! I was so focused on Harry, everything else sort of escaped my notice. That makes me wonder...when Bob hacked off that part of his existence, he had to have known the possible ramifications of it, right? I just can't imagine that he didn't know that Evil Bob could be formed from it. That said, why would he do it? Sure, he did it to protect Harry from that part of him, but at the same time, if that part wasn't destroyed, it could still harm Harry in another way. Case in point, the fight with Evil Bob. So wouldn't the whole situation have been better, if Bob had Harry perform some kind of binding magic on that evil part once he hacked it off? Maybe I'm talking in circles...
That said, I hope Bob doesn't die! Assuming he doesn't, will he stay with Butters or will Harry get him back? I definitely think Butters has benefited immeasurably from having Bob as a companion, but at the same time, it's hard to think about Harry without Bob.

Huh...I must be one of the only ones that struggled with this book. I didn't really get into it until the last 200 or so pages. I was expecting Harry to really focus on finding out who killed him, not wandering off everywhere. For me there was just too much going on that didnt connect. Overall I thought the book was good, just not as good as the last one. Maybe if I read the whole series again back-to-back I may change my mind about this book....it's happened before....
Learning who shot Harry totally blew me away...not who pulled the trigger, but who arranged it and Molly's role too. I loved the battle sequence in Molly's head with all the Start Trek Mollys. They had me laughing the whole time. And of course the ending when Harry is visting all his friends had me bawling and thinking that this could be the end after all. As I got closer and closer to the end, I kept wondering where the heck Thomas was! I was hoping Harry would end up free of Mab and back in the world of the living. I guess one out 2 will do....
Someone already mentioned the "My gast was pretty well flabbered" line. Here is another that I loved:
"Boobs are near the center of the universe, until you turn twenty-five or so. Which is also when young men's auto insurance rates go down. This is not a coincidence." (page 79)

**~SPOILER~**
Finding out Harry arranged his own killing was a huge "Ah ha!" moment for me, but it was a "Duh!" moment for me as well. Harry was very clear about his feelings on becoming the Winter Knight and his worries about what it would turn him into. He said more than once that he didn't want to allow his power to become so corrupted and he didn't want to be used as a weapon. So it made perfect sense to me that he made that call to Kincaid.

OMG... What have I done.
I decided, I needed to read this series, so I got online at my local library to see if they had epubs of this series. They have books 1 to 6 bundled and books 7-12 bundled.
I ordered bundle 1 thru 6. Now the library gives you 14 days to read this... So I guess I will be having an intense Butcher-fest..at my house for the next 14 days..LOL

I haven't gotten around to reading this book yet, but I'm committed to eventually reading it.
I also haven't read through this thread yet. I want to avoid spoilers. However, I have read through many on-line reviews. The majority are very positive, but I don't exactly trust them because, let's face it, the Dresden Files is an extremely popular series with an in-built favorable bias.
Some of the really interesting reader impressions I've read have come from GoodReads. Some readers just love the series and love this book (expected), some love this book in particular because of it's explorative and introspective parts and some felt like it was the weakest Dresden book to date. The criticism ranged from it's wordy/contemplative focus; slow initial pace; predictable ending; ultimate failure to increase Harry's character depth; and/or failure to advance the story arc. One guy even said he was sick of Harry's trite one-liners.
So, I again looked through the on-line reviews, and this one at Ghost Story : Harry Dresden and the Jim Butcher Promise struck a chord with me because it explained, criticized and praised Ghost Story.
P.S. All of you die hard Dresden fans will be happy to know that Ghost Story is currently listed as the fifth bestseller on the N.Y. Times list. (See 'hardcover, fiction' at Best Sellers - The New York Times.)

Thanks for the great review, dalnewt! I appreciate it when reviewers can give offer both positive and negative feedback on a novel. There is no such thing as a perfect novel, so without incorporating its shortcomings, it doesn't seem geniune. When you get around to this book, please let us know what you think. You always have great insights.

Well I finished this book last week and I loved it. But for all those who think that Harry and Molly are going to end up together???? OMG, that is simply ludicrous.....Molly is one of Harry's best friends daughters.....gross! That would be totally wrong in my opinion and would ruin the story so far since it has always be implied that Harry and Murphy should end up together.

I would have agreed with you up until I finished this book. I always thought the idea of Harry with Molly was kind of gross, and that Harry with Murphy was always the obvious pairing. Yet, something about Murphy really turned me off in Ghost Story. I completely understand that Harry's "death" affected her profoundly, as well as all of the choices she has had to make from Changes on. At the same time, Molly seems to have grown up immensely. I think she's crossed the point where being with Harry would no longer be cradle-robbing, but instead, she and Harry are peers who could respect each other as wizards and possibly something more. As long as Jim Butcher does it right, I wouldn't be upset if Harry ended up with either of them.
But I am kind of rooting more for Molly right now...

Well lets see "something happened to Murphy and she has been acting strange", well she has been under the impression that the person she is in love with has been killed (and hopeing that it isn't true). She has only been hanging with Kincaid because Harry was with the Wizard lady from the council, and it would have been a major distraction.....plus the added benefit of bothering Harry. I simply can NOT see Molly and Harry together, the whole ideas is just creepy and perverted. When Molly was in diapers, Harry was already having sex with Elaine and then killing monsters with her father. I for one will stop reading the books if this happens as I think it sends the wrong message to people that degenerate acts are acceptable. But that is just my opinion!

I just finished this book. I went into this book with a very negative attitude. I think the whole "Oh yay, now Harrys a ghost" thing really turned me off. But after reading it, I would have to say it was one of the best if not the best Dresden book to date. I actually liked the self searching that Harry did in this book. It was refreshing seeing him stand back and reflect on the things going on around him and the things he had done. Usually he is running from one explosion to the next all book long without much chance for though. I thought Butcher showed much more maturity in the way this book was written.
I was very surprised by the him planning his own death though it was a "well duh" moment for me as well. I would not have expected Molly to have gone along with it though.
As far as Karrin vs Molly goes I really have no clue who Harry will end up with. I made a prediction a book or 2 ago in the forum that I though Harry might end up with Molly and everyone freaked. It looks more possible now than it did then and I think it would be awesome if it did Of course it could be Murphy, or Queen Mab, or Ms. Gard, or anyone, or no one. Anyway, here are my arguments for Molly:
1. As far as the "He was already a man when she was born thing"....nah, I don't buy it. She is not a child. She is a woman (and a quite capable one at that) and Harry is a man. They are Wizards who might live 300 or 400 years. A 15 or 20 year age difference is nothing compared to that. It would be worse to marry Murphy and have her grow old and die while Harry barely seems to age.
2. They are more compatible. They are both nerds (Star Trek/Star Wars = Awesome). They are both Wizards. They will understand each other better than Harry / Murphy ever will be able to. Once again they can have a full life together without the sorrow of watching their spouses wither and die.
3. Molly is direct and she knows what she wants. The whole should we get together, should we not get together, right time, not the right time crap Harry and Murphy have has gone from cute, to sad, to irritating. They have had 13 books to get together. 13. If it was going to happen it should have. Murphy need to take up the sword and focus on being the best knight she can be. Molly on the other hand has stated her intention from the beginning. She has always wanted Harry and still does. She has teased and tormented him for books (prancing around in her underwear, etc.) and he has always had this image of her as a child and student. In this book he started to see her as more of an equal. Hopefully, after this book he will recognize her as "one hell of a woman" and forget about all the she is a kid crap as well. (Of course if they do get together that probably means she will get killed off or something equally disturbing so as I was saying.....go Murphy) }![]()
