Re: JANUARY FEATURE #1: Tempest's Legacy by Nicole Peeler

Well, this one was a "no-brainer" – pretty much everyone who has read Nicole Peeler's Jane True saga has loved it and what better way to begin a new year with a new installment from a beloved series!

Tempest's Legacy is the third in the series, after Tempest Rising and Tracking the Tempest.

Here's the great review PW gave Tempest's Legacy:

Publishers Weekly

Peeler seamlessly blends snarky pop culture references with emotionally harrowing topics in the third Jane True supernatural adventure. Still reeling from her trip to Boston in 2010's Tracking the Tempest, halfling Jane True is dealt another staggering blow: her long-lost selkie mother, Mari, has been murdered at a secret lab where horrible experiments were performed upon supernatural creatures. When Jane's sometime lover Ryu and her current crush, Anyan, find the lab, everything and everyone within it has been destroyed. When Jane's best friend, the succubus Iris, is kidnapped, Jane is certain her nemesis, Jarl, is behind the unspeakable acts. Jane is sure to endear herself to new readers with her charm, sass, and vulnerability, while longtime fans will be thrilled by her magical and emotional growth. (Jan.)

Re: JANUARY FEATURE #1: Tempest's Legacy by Nicole Peeler!

Good pick! I received this book just before Christmas. I started reading it right after the weekend. This is one of the best in the series. Very good storyline. I couldn't put it down till I had finished it. It did come out ahead of the scheduled time and it jumped to the top of my pile.

Wish I wound have known that Tempest's Legacy (Jane True Series #3) was released around Christmas. It wasn't scheduled for release until Jan 1 per the B&N web site. Right now it looks like I won't receive it until about Jan 5.

I guess it doesn't really matter. It will probably take me all of a day to read the book. Yep, they're that good.:smileyvery-happy:

I'll have to stay out of this thread until after I finish the book. See you later.:smileyhappy:

P.S. Hey Paul, whenever you get a chance, let us know what the other January features are.

You're not the only one that was in the dark about this book being released early.  I checked just before Christmas and it wasn't available:smileysad:.  I downloaded it last night and am getting ready to start it right this very minute:smileyvery-happy:.  I read the first two at warp speed.  They're just good fun books!  I hope Ms. Peeler plans on several more!

This is a slow month for paranormal fantasy – I'm going to feature the latest Faith Hunter novel, Mercy Blade, but I may just have two features this month. Unless of course anyone has any suggestions?!?

that said, February has some potentially great releases... here are some I'm looking for!

1. Crossed: A Void City Novel by J. F. Lewis (fantastic – and shockingly under-rated – saga)

2. Bloodshot by Cherie Priest (Cherie's return to paranormal fantasy!)

3. A Brush of Darkness by Allison Pang (debut)

Hmm, well I've ordered the follow-up to Deadtown entitled

Hellforged , which looks good per the customer reviews/ratings, and the third installment of the Bloodhound Files entitled

Killing Rocks, which, per the PW review, looks like it contains a lot of action. I also pre-ordered

Allison Dewitt Is Trapped which looks really witty but doesn't have a release date until Jan. 18.

Depending on the comments, I might read Mercy Blade. I enjoyed the first book in the series, but the second one really pissed me off in terms of whole kid missing plot, the lack of intelligence demonstrated by the heroine in having kids with her in the first place and the dearth of shapeshifting.

P. S. In the next 2-3 weeks I'll definitely be ordering Lewis'

Crossed as well as Priest's

Bloodshot (Cheshire Red Reports Series #1). I'll also check out

A Brush of Darkness.

P.P.S. I'll be reading Mike Carey's firth installment soon entitled

The Naming of the Beasts. It got a fantastic review from PW and is one of the best supernatural mystery series being written today, IMO.

Re: JANUARY FEATURE #1: Tempest's Legacy by Nicole Peeler!

I finished Tempest's Leagacy today and I really enjoyed seeing how Jane's grown in both her general growth and the use of her powers.  I am really looking forward to seeing if her relationship with Anyan develops or what happens.  I'm not going to say anything more because I know that a lot of people still haven't read the book yet.

I've also gotta vote for Killing Rocks by DD Barant for January...  :-)  I'm reading it right now and lots of action so far.  This is such a good series.

Paul will you feature Pale Demon for March?

Here is my list for February:

February 22, 2011

Jeaniene Frost: Vamp Hunter #5 – This Side of the Grave

Melissa Marr: Wicked Lovely #5 – Darkest Mercy

Kim Harrison: Rachel Morgan #9 - Pale Demon

Adrian Phoenix: Makers Song #4 - Etched in Bone

Alayna Williams: Oracle #2 – Rogue Oracle

Jaye Wells: Sabina Kane #3 – Green Eyed Demon

**JUMPS UP AND DOWN FOR ETCHED IN BONE AND PALE DEMON**

Definitely also looking forward to This Side of the Grave...been a while since she wrote a Cat and Bones book!  :-)  Also looking forward to Green Eyed Demon...if I last recall her sister was kidnapped at the end of the last book!!

Nobody has Tempest's Legacy yet...gotta wait for that one.  Oh well...

I just finished this evening and I agree with you.  I'm loving the character development and I am eager to see what happens with Jane & Anyan.  I'm also interested in how the character who's in the very last scene of the book fits in to the storyline.

IMHO...This was by far the best of the Tempest books:smileyvery-happy:!  Can't wait for #4!!!!!

Re: JANUARY FEATURE #1: Tempest's Legacy by Nicole Peeler!

If your not reading this series, I hold the right to slap you with my copy of the book while letting out a high pitch squelch of disbelief.  I love it and therefore feel that you should too.  That is my new lodestar and I'm sticking to it like the good little fangirl I am.

I LOVE this series and Tempest Legacy was no disappointment.  Great book.  I adore watching Jane's growth and development, and am proud of our little selkie coming into her true-strength.  Plus, I can not deny that I am quit tingly over the direction of where her love life is going.  Did feel like us fans got a little C.B.'d at the end of the book. I mean come on Peeler, you couldn't of added a little extra there for us at the end (wink wink).  Oh, and I am so disappointed with all that happened with Ryu (a-hole).

One of my favorite series and it is written by a very funny woman.

Re: JANUARY FEATURE #1: Tempest's Legacy by Nicole Peeler

I finished Tempest's Legacy last night.  I couldn't go to bed till I read the end.:smileyhappy: and then of course I read the sneak peak for the next book and I'm excited about it all over again!

Jane has grown and she really seems to be finding her paranormal self. Without giving anything away, I am definitely happy with the way Ms. Peeler is taking the story.  This is a fun and sometimes intense take on the paranormal niche and its a nice break from some of the really intense stuff I read:smileytongue:

I read the Sneak Peek too. Usually I skip them because I don't want to read any spoilers about the next book. But I couldn't wait.

Re: JANUARY FEATURE #1: Tempest's Legacy by Nicole Peeler

[ Edited ]

I finished the book last night and was emotionally engaged throughout. The genius of the novel is how the wrenching sometimes grim plot blends with Jane's self-effacing humor, overactive libido and occasional snarky witticism. Jane's emotional vulnerability and humor make her sympathetic throughout although some of her decisions/actions are questionable to ill-advised.

The plot concerns Jane's quest to avenge her mothers' death after she's told that her mother's body was found in a storefront lab that conducted illicit experiments on full and half breed women. Jane forcefully insists on being included in the investigation as Anyan, Julian and Ryu prepare to go to the Chicago 'borderlands' area to investigate the lab in question as well as other newly discovered labs. Jane comes to believe that her mother was captured and killed because of her.  Further, she and other Rockabill supernaturals become convinced that everyone Jane cares about is at risk when her succubus friend Iris is forcefully kidnapped from her above-store apartment.

There are a couple of plot twists which send the book in unpredictable directions, and at the finish the entire situation among the supernaturals is tenuous at best. Plus, a sort of deus machina character intervenes. This new character is basically an unknown but acts like an ally rather than an enemy. The tense climax becomes wildly unpredictable as another plot twist occurs.

The romantic sub-plot is also quite entertaining primarily as the result of Jane's amusing internal dialogue which sometimes pits her principals against her irrepressible libido. By the end of the book Jane's romantic situation is tentative but hopeful.

The story-arc concerning the laissez faire governance of the supernatural community by the Alfar, the discrimination by full bloods against halflings and the perfidy the Alfar spymaster Jarl, (who Jane believes responsible for the labs/deaths), evolves in unexpected ways. Plus, Jane grows in power and self-confidence. Nonetheless, she still makes pretty dumb moves on occasion, and readily admits same during the narrative. Jane's insight into her own needs also slowly evolves.

For me this novel wasn't as charming as Tempest Rising (Jane True Series #1); nor was it as amusing as Tracking the Tempest (Jane True Series #2). But, it was the most emotionally compelling for me so far.

Re: JANUARY FEATURE #1: Tempest's Legacy by Nicole Peeler

I finished up the book this morning.  This one was more serious than the first two, although we did get the snarky comments between Jane and her libido.  I liked the blend of the emotional turmoil as Jane comes to terms with her mother and Iris's disappearance, with the light hearted scenes with Anyan.

As others already mentioned, Jane did some growing up in this book.  It was nice to see her realize she is stronger than she thought she was.  It will be interesting to see how Peeler handles Ryu's character now....I don't see him just giving up.
