This book is sitting on the my coffee table waiting to be read. Love Adrian Phoenix's Makers Song series so I had to read this first installment in her new investigative/mystery series. The book features a Cajun hoodoo apprentice who winds up in bed with her murdered sorcerer hookup after attending a carnival in New Orleans.

Spcat
You can start with this one because it is the start to a whole new series that is set in New Orleans but not part of the Maker series.

Just got back from B&N and will start reading when I finish here. Can't hardly wait, don't know if I'm excited for reading a new book or to be able to share it with you guys later. I feel like a kid in a candy store.

I'm just four chapters into this book and man is it one powerhouse of a novel. It is going to be as much of a barn burner as Adrian's Maker series. She knows how to do her world building and character development. I just hope we don't have to wait a year for the second book,

I'm really liking this book so far. The story spins a good investigative/crime tale with deeper mysteries surrounding the nature of the leading female character, Kallie Rivere, and the secrets held by her hoodoo priestess aunt. Written in the third-person, the book follows the experiences/perceptions of diverse and amusing main characters. The cast includes the hot-headed twenty-something hoodoo root worker Kallie; her funny and loyal voodoo priestess friend Belladonna; her hoodoo quasi-uncle who keeps being attacked, a hot and blond dreadlocked nomad biker who is a vessel for the dead, an Irish pixie-like woman who is divorced from the biker but remains his protective friend; and, the conjurer head of magical Hecatean Council who leads the investigation and demonstrates an intelligent/droll wit. In addition to the amusing characters and interesting mysteries, the book provides distinct and diverse dialect (consisting of cajun, british and Irish expressions), well-described magic (mainly hoodoo and voodoo hexes/charms) and an entertaining southern ambience.

P.S. In comparison to Phoenix's Maker's Song series, this first book in her new series is less edgy and not quite as intense. Genrally, it's more lighthearted in tenure and features more amusing situations/dialogue. Nonetheless, some of the mysteries are very dark including Kallie's past; the magic utilized to kill/attack people is very black; and, the villain is diabolical and dedicated to revenge.

Sounds very interesting. In fact, I think this will have to be a Must Buy (my wallet doesn't thank you, dalnewt, but my reading soul does
). Also, I love the title.

This book is very good. It's not as dark or acutely intense as her Maker's Song series, but it provides a solid crime/investigative story with sympathetic/appealing main characters, periodic humor and well-described magic. The book reaches a very tidy conclusion that satisfies but ultimately seems perhaps a bit too convenient with the mystery of Kallie's past and inexplicable magical power being revealed immediately after the criminal plot line is resolved.

Hi Toni,
Thanks to Paul and all of you for having me here again! What a thrill to have BDM featured here!! I'm really glad you've enjoyed it!
But, yeah, it'll be next July before the 2nd book - BLACK HEART LOA - is released.
With two on-going series and a fulltime day job (which I hope not to need some day!), a book every six months is all I can manage. I would love, love, love to put out more than two books a year and very much plan to work up to that.
What's really exciting is that readers (like you!) want to see more books from me!! Yay! ![]()
