This is the "no-brainer" of the year – with only a few books left until the end of the series, I'm guessing that this new release should be just phenomenal. It's next-up on my reading list!  :smileyhappy:

[ Edited ]

Thanks for putting up this thread early Paul.:smileyvery-happy:

I'm just starting

A Perfect Blood (Rachel Morgan Series #10), so it'll be a day or two until I'm ready to comment. But others have already finished, so I look forward to eventually reading their impressions of the book.

It's interesting the PW and Library Journal reviews mention that this book is accessible to first time readers of the series. (See reviews copied at the end of this post.)

There's just one other question I have--are there any plans for a visit to the boards by Kim Harrison? I loved her previous visits, so I'm just asking with fingers crossed.:smileyhappy:

Publishers Weekly

At book 10 of her Hollows series, Harrison has, by now, fleshed out an exceedingly satisfying and well-rendered world that is much more than the usual paranormal backdrop, giving us fascinating side glimpses into the problems of the recently deceased at the DMV or the semiotics of pixie apparel. While the story centers on Rachel Morgan, former witch and current demon, and her pursuit of the Humans Against Paranormals Association, a domestic terrorist organization, it plays out against a larger structure of warring power groups of demons, elves, vampires, and werewolves. First-time readers will find this volume a good introduction to Harrison’s landmark urban fantasy series, though they would be best served by beginning at the beginning; fans will love it from start to finish. Agent: Richard Curtis, Richard Curtis Associates.

Library Journal

In Harrison's tenth series installment (after Pale Demon), Rachel Morgan, a witch-turned-demon, is drawn to the crime scene of a tortured and mutilated university student strung up in a park gazebo. Working with both supernatural-run and human-run police agencies, Rachel investigates more ritualistic murders thought to be carried out by a hate group, Humans Against Paranormals Association (HAPA). HAPA is attempting to create its own demons but needs Rachel's unique blood to be successful. While simultaneously trying to fight HAPA and evade being kidnapped by the group, Rachel also struggles with her identity as a demon. VERDICT Harrison's colorful cast of supporting characters (a foul-mouthed pixy, a frustrated werewolf bodyguard, a cat-riding fairy, and a posh vampire) keeps the story moving among the fast-paced action scenes. Longtime fans will obviously be standing in line for this one. However, readers with any interest in urban fantasy can easily jump into the story via Harrison's explanations of past events.

I can't wait to read this one.  I drove down to Atlanta yesterday to see her and get the book. She was lovely as always!

Someone asked a question about the number of books left.  She said 12-13...it will all depend on if she can wrap things up in book 12.  If so, number 13 would be something new.  She also said she's trying to give everyone their HEA, but she may not be able to wrap up all the loose threads.

Another tidbit I found out at the signing....someone asked her about her Kim Harrison name. Dawn Cooke is the name on her driver's license.  Turns out, her editor picked the name Harrison because it would get her books shelved near Hamilton.

Oh one other bit of news from the book signing....reading the being human thread jogged my memory.

Someone asked Kim about any talk of turning the Hollows into a tv show or movie.  Kim said that the CW bought the rights and is working on a pilot.  She said it looks like it will be ready for the 2012/2013 season. She should have more info in June.

Wow I didn't know that...it's pretty brilliant actually.  :-)  So Dawn Cooke is her real name...huh.

Finished this in the wee hours of the morning today.  Can not wait until more people have had a chance to read it and we can really get into discussing it.  In the meantime I am going back to staring adoringly at my Kim Harrison shrine and wishing she could write faster. :smileywink::smileytongue::smileylol:

Re: MARCH FEATURE #1: A Perfect Blood by Kim Harrison

I finished it on Saturday, and instead of going through my usual withdrawal symptoms, I actually started re-reading Pale Demon, starting about half way through (when all the huge events occur)! I just wanted that little refresher, and I wasn't quite ready to let go of the gang....

I finished last night. I took my time reading it because I wanted to draw out the experience as long as I could. This book is meant to be savored. I wish I could have drawn out the reading longer, but I had to read during all my free moments.

This book is immersive from start to finish. The story reels the reader into Rachel's life and world by starting with the most mundane of problems and expanding into a narrative filled with uncertainty and challenge. This book has everything--humor, action, great dialog, surprise twists, phenomenal character growth and emotional satisfaction. I know Rachel's a character in a series, but she's never felt more like a real person than she does in this book.

Right now I don't feel like I can adequately express the qualities that make this book so very good. Good luck with you review Paul - it's a GREAT book!

I've read some not-so-complimentary reviews of this book and I think what some readers are losing focus of is that the series is coming to an end – it's not just another installment in the series, it's a move to set up the ultimate conclusion. A Perfect Blood may not be the most beloved novel in the series but it's a necessary one.

Now, Kim has a "freer" and more self-aware Rachel Morgan – the end is anyone's guess. Does anyone have a guess?    :smileywink:

Re: MARCH FEATURE #1: A Perfect Blood by Kim Harrison

I finished this book in one day-loved it as usual!  I too have read some unfavorable remarks, especially on her blog and I am at a loss for words.  I thought all of the characters showed growth and some were even shown to "start" finding themselves in their own way. Comfortable enough in their relationships to start new endeavors (Ivy helping with Felix shows what kind of leader she plans to be in future-Jenks making strides to end feuds among species-Glenn liking his position enough to go somewhere he felt was "more fair" and less red tape-Belle embracing her "new" life- Al and respect... I can go on and on. I enjoyed it and too felt these were things that needed to be shown in order for series to end.  Although, selfishly I wish it wasn't ending so soon.  When can we start discussing particulars, or speculation on whats to come?? Or is that not something everyone wants to do??

I do have to say, last years series, for me, had quite a few let-downs in story direction(maybe "genre shift") but this was not one of them.

I love this site!!  All of you are so polite and responsive.  Thank you!!

The obvious thing to say would be that Rachel somehow winds up as a partner (romantically or otherwise) with Trent. It's clear she wants to support his runner/magic efforts, so I think that Rachel and Trent will team up in the closing books. Also, Trent's genetic efforts have importance to Rachel and the demons. So Rachel will continue to be involved with Trent.

Personally I hope that Rachel finds completion with someone totally out-of-the box--someone like Al maybe.:smileyvery-happy: Al's waaay too old for her, but it would be a fun twist.

Nobody knows what Al and/or the other demons really are. What if Trent's genetic efforts reveal demons to have a very witch-like anatomy (w/out the small penis syndrome:smileywink:). Once demons can procreate, it only makes sense that they'll want mates among the witches on earth. And, perhaps fixing the demons also encompasses restoring the witches demon-like ley line abilities. And, there's the whole loss of  ever-after mass that Rachel must somehow remedy. Perhaps that solution will involve curing the imbalance between the two dimensions allowing demons to finally migrate to earth.

Nick and Jax have to make an appearance before the series ends. I really hate Nick, so I don't want him to have any sort of ongoing relationship with Rachel.

The Ivy option seems to have been firmly shut down by statements made by Rachel w/in the book--to the effect that she loves Ivy, but she'll never have a blood/sexual relationship with her.  Ivy though is still up-in-the-air. Maybe she'll forge an alliance with the IS and Felix, but the whole issue of Ivy's soul after her first death is no closer to resolution than it was in the first book.

Jenks and his family will be given the church/garden and it looks like he won't ever have another romantic relationship after Matilina. He'll be a content widower managing his family.

P.S. Hey Paul, the reader ratings for A Perfect Blood (Rachel Morgan Series #10)  look positive on Goodreads (and Amazon). Based upon over a thousand plus votes, goodreads rates the book as 4.5 stars. (See A Perfect Blood (The Hollows, #10) by Kim Harrison - Reviews ....)

Depending on the reader's bias, a few readers will always be unhappy with way things work out in a late series book. This book worked for me because I become emotionally invested in Rachel's journey from fear to acceptance. Yeah, I felt like she was being dense about cutting herself off from her magic, but her fears about the Ever-after and Al were convincing. And, I didn't mind her hostility towards Trent. He turned her into a rat, kept her prisoner and put her in rat fights. He hunted her like an animal with dogs. She has a right to have reservations about Trent. Also, he's a hypocritical drug lord. I've always sort of liked Trent and thought there was more to him than the jerky businessman, but at times he's been a real asshat, (like when he attacked Rachel after they stole the elf genome from the ever-after).

Re: MARCH FEATURE #1: A Perfect Blood by Kim Harrison

Ahhh, about the rat fights, I forgot that Rachel transformed herself into a mink (maybe it was a ferret) but for some reason 'mink' is sticking in my head. She did so to sneak into Trent's office. Trent didn't transform her into a rat, but he did prevent her from transforming back into a woman and kept her imprisoned in a cage in his office. He also put her in the rat fights where she met Nick who had been transformed into a rat. (Nick really did turned out to be a rat.)

Re: MARCH FEATURE #1: A Perfect Blood by Kim Harrison

Up until this book, I would've put money on Rach and Ivy ending up together – that would've been a wonderful twist but now....eh. I don't think so. Trent? Maybe, dalnewt but something about that just doesn't feel right to me. I think that – especially after reading A Perfect Blood – Rachel will end up single but not alone.

Here's the thing – not being in a relationship is perfectly okay and if Rach hasn't found that certain someone by the end of this series, I'm fine with her walking off into the sunset with her super strong relationships with her friends in tact.

Does this series need a romantic connection at its end? I say no.

Maybe--but isn't that what Rachel has right now? I mean she's single with good friends. Also, based upon her ogling of men and replay of Trent in a towel and Trent's kiss, she's obviously horny. Frankly, how is Rachel gonna be really happy if she doesn't find someone to express her sexuality with? Plus, per this book, she obviously wants a special someone and envied Ivy.

Agreed, Dalnewt – I guess my biggest concern is a HEA ending that doesn't jive with the rest of the storyline... it's a touchy thing because, like I said in my review, these characters have become like family to me and I want what's best for Rachel. I'd personally rather see her alone and sexually frustrated than with someone who isn't "right" for her. Is Trent right for her? Maybe...

There is still the Kisten (im)possibility – I would LOVE to see that someone happen. But HOW?
