While reading
Etched in Bone (Maker's Song Series #4), I was both completely entertained by the absorbing story lines and impatient. I was impatient because the book starts out with a shocking sequence of events, then it goes back in time to two days before. The narrative is soooo good that I couldn't help becoming immersed in the various story-lines despite wanting to desperately know what happens after that shocker beginning. And, the book eventually reaches those events and goes beyond them in a killer climax that leaves the reader desperately wanting to know what comes next.
Like all the books in this series, the book is written in the third-party and follows the experiences of multiple characters via disparate or interwoven story lines. Each plot thread is unbelievably sharp, quick-paced and engrossing. This book is perhaps the best technical thriller written in this series to date. But, I desperately want to know what comes after that killer climax.

Read it and loved it. I'm a big fan of Adrian and she never disappoints. The hardest part is always waiting for the next book, lol. If you like the genre and have never read any of her stuff I highly recommend you give her a try. The books are best read in order though, IMO.

This series is #1 on my list... :-) Lovable characters and such a tangled web of lies and corruption at the FBI that you just want to scream sometimes. I was so angry with Heather's father and Purcell at the end of the book I was fuming!!! LOL I hope with Dante's new abilities and where ever he is, that they won't be able to hold him for long...well once he gets out of the past again. Wow, you gotta feel for the guy when he keeps getting sucked into all the nasty and horrible things that happened to him in the past. :-( The way people call him little psycho and things like that...when really what did he do??? They f*cked him up from the get go as soon as he was born, and his step-father was just an insane piece of work. The SB did this to him so how is it his fault??? GRRRRRRRR
Then there is James Wallace...I really, seriously hope Heather shoots him for what he did to her mother and now her. The bastard needs to die.
Okay I'm done... This book got me so worked up. LOL
I'm glad the've got a couple more allies in Merri and her partner...they can sure use the help.
Man, I am dying to find out what happens next!!!

I love the sharpness of each story-line, and the way every character has his/her own personal agenda. The vamps want to preserve 'true blood' Dante to fulfill their own personal agendas, the Fallen want to bind Dante to raise their own status and save Gehenna and agents from the FBI and Shadow Branch want to either destroy Dante or use him in some way. Purcell and his mind-wiping/controlling abilities just adds another layer to all the forces threatening to pull Dante apart. Purcell is certainly the most insidious as he can control both FBI and SB agents. And, his purpose is completely malevolent. He seeks to recreate Dante's past until Dante becomes the Great Destroyer. Poor Violet, first genetically modified by Dante to look like Chloe and now used as part of Purcell's plan to drive Dante insane. In a way I'm glad that Heather's dad grabbed her, at least it kept her out of Purcell's hands.

Just started this – I love reading Adrian. I've said this before and I'm sure I'll say it again –
this saga is arguably the BEST paranormal fantasy series going and Adrian Phoenix the most adept writer. Talk about under-appreciated...

HA! Adrian had the time to do an interview! Here's the link:
http://bookclubs.barnesandnoble.com/t5/Exploration
Also, if you could ask Adrian Phoenix any questions, what would they be?
Please post your questions here – and I'll see if I can get her to take some time off from book signings to stop by and answer them for us!

Really good interview Paul.
I hope Adrian gets her glass slipper.![]()
I would ask:
Why she placed the primary setting in New Orleans? (The South seems to be a favorite venue for her, why?)
Why she mixed New Orleans/Cajun scenery/sensibilities with goth rock?
Whether she's fluent in French and/or Cajun French?
What her sources of information are regarding government agencies, like the FBI, and undercover procedures/stakeouts?
How she got the idea to combine a vampire with a fallen angel, and then make him a creator?
How she got the idea to write a supernatural series in a thriller style?

Just wanted to jump and say I'm a big fan of Adrian's series. I can't wait to read this one. Also? Looking at her cover here, I realized we have the same cover model. We're cover sisters!

Paul, thank you, thank you, thank you! I am pretty new to the UF genre. I actually stumbled across an old message board from when you first mentioned book one, A Rush of Wings. Based on those comments, I was really quite anxious to read about this "super sexy" rock star Dante! So much so that I also sent the link to my bookclub members from work. I, just tonight, finished reading the last book in the series. Adrian Phoenix is my hero! I am, officially, in the "I can't wait until the next book" club. I am without words! I am in a state of shock. I am many, many, things. I am NOT patient! Could it be the the last book was only just released? Does this mean that I have an entire year to wait until the next installment? Woe is me! Again, thanks Paul for informing me about a great author and a great genre.

Thanks for your questions, Dainewt!
1. I use New Orleans as a setting because I love that city. It's always spoken to me and when I created Dante (I start with characters, then come up with a storyline), New Orleans was always a part of him. I'm fascinated by Louisiana and its culture - Cajun, hoodoo, everything. Setting my stories there gives me the opportunity to explore.
2. There was no real thought behind mixing Cajun and goth rock - both are a part of Dante. Sure, he was raised Cajun, but his music taste ran in a different direction from zydeco, blues, or swamp rock - though he has been known to mix elements of all those styles into his music.
3. I'm not fluent in French or Cajun. I lived in France for a year as a kid and went to a French school when I was there, but I'm pretty rusty. I have tons of French language books and dictionaries, but I primarily use the Cajun dictionaries, language books, and tapes that I've picked up (and I've got a bunch!). I've been teaching myself.
I've heard from Cajun readers who are very pleased with the books - which makes me feel great!
4. I have a FBI handbook written by former FBI profiler John Douglas that goes over the requirements and procedures of joining the FBi. It also is full of stories from his early days in the FBI, along with fascinating (and frustrating) experiences from fellow agents. I also have a book by a female FBi agent detailing her experiences in the Bureau. Plus, I've read every book John Douglas has written about the cases he investigated (and how) during his years in the FBI. I've also employed stuff I've read, watched on TV, and just plain imagined.
5. I didn't really have an idea to combine a vampire with a fallen angel, then make him a creator, per se. It was all organic. All a part of Dante.
6. The same here. I didn't really think about how I was writing the story, I just did. My dad used to read thrillers all the time when I was growing up and he'd give me the books to read. It's just how I write, I think. All those elements seeped into my subconscious with each book I read. LOL. So the process is organic. I don't think about it.
Again, thanks for your questions!

Isn't it Dion that can wipe people's minds? Purcell was SOD Underwood's lackey and now he's Dion's lackey. :-)

You're right, I got the names mixed up. Purcell is being used by Dion who's a Nephilim with a grudge against the Elohim.

If you don't mind one more question I'd like to know what mythological sources you drew upon in the series. Obviously some Judeo-Christian source is involved, but did you have any specific sources?

Please tell your sister hello from me! Yup, my dad was a writer, but he was never published. He wrote fiction along the lines of Ian Fleming and John D. MacDonald, and I used to type his manuscripts up for him when I was a teen. He'd send them out and get awful rejections. Like the ones Snoopy gets in Peanuts (Never darken our mailbox again). He really broke his heart. He eventually quit writing and advised me not to pursue it professionally. I really felt for him, but it didn't dampen my enthusiasm for writing.
What my dad exceled in, but never, ever submitted to publishers, was his humorous stories. Man, he'd write these hilarious spoofs of TV shows and movies that had me and my sisters and my friends (who would eagerly ask for my dad's funny stories) laughing so hard we had tears rolling down our faces.
But he only wrote the funny pieces for us. He wrote a spoof of Jaws called Beak, about a 20,000 pound rogue cornish game hen . . . So damned hilarious!
I think he'd be thrilled with my books and my success. He died at age 58 from cancer before I sold my first novel. I have a humourous pararnormal fantasy novel (a short one) that I'm going to put up online. It'll be dedicated to my dad.
Thanks for the question, Paul!

I just wrote my reader review of Etched in Bone (Maker's Song Series #4) as follows:
Sharp And Dynamic
Customer Rating
Posted March 7, 2011, 8:44 PM EST: I love this paranormal thriller series. Each book is composed of multiple, interwoven story lines which form a suspenseful story of the mentally fractured but irresistible Dante, a hybrid born vampire/fallen angel. This latest installment begins with a jaw dropping series of events, then goes back in time to two days before to cover the intervening events. Eventually, the book goes beyond that shocker beginning only to end in a cliffhanger. It's a thriller in every sense of the word, and delivers an unbelievably sharp and complex story. The plot lines recount the experiences of Dante and his capable human lover, Heather, as well as the actions and thoughts of myriad adversaries and other players. While reading I desperately wanted to know what happened after that shocker beginning, but the suspense and action of the intervening events captured my attention. This series is masterfully written, exciting and addictive. If you like the thriller style and love supernatural fantasy, then this series is tailor made for you. Likewise, if you love to read a story a story about a completely fascinating vampire protagonist, then you will love this ongoing tale about goth rock Dante. Not only is he a born vampire, he's a fallen angel who can make and unmake living things. He's fighting to stay sane despite being programmed as a serial killer from birth, and he's fighting to stay free despite numerous adversarial forces who seek to use him and/or destroy him.
