I'll cut to the chase: Benedict Jacka is the next coming of Jim Butcher.
Here's why:

I just added Fated (Alex Verus Series #1) to my pick-up pile at my local B&N. I will be reading it this month!![]()
OK, so that presupposes that I get my butt in gear, brave the inclement weather and actually pick up the books. Where effort (other than reading) is involved, I like to procrastinate. But, I'm definitely gonna pick up my reserved paperbacks in the next two-three days--probably tomorrow.

Paul, after reading your blog I checked out the book at Barnes and Noble. Then I decided to read a couple chapters at Barnes and Noble today. I was impressed. This book will be in my list.

Sold.
After reading your review and the Q&A with Benedict and Jim I ordered the book straightaway. As soon as I finish Fair Game, it will be next. I am seriously considering starting the Elemental Assassin series as well, because I need more books to read, he said sarcastically.

It is up next after I finish Fair Game. If I keep barreling through it like I have been that should be by the weekend.

Man, this book is crazy good too. It is very Dresden-esque. I like Alex as a character. He definitely has that do the right thing no matter what the cost, right is right thing that Harry has, but he is not as tortured so far. That is interesting. I also like that he is not crazy powerful. So far, so good.

I enjoyed this book. It reminded me a lot of the Harry Dresden series. This was a strength and a weakness, because sometimes Alex felt like a British, less-powerful Harry. I hope in the next book Jacka does a little bit more to differentiate this series from the Dresden Files. You can tell he has a lot of affection for the Dresden Files, but I hope he plays up what makes this series unique. That being said though, I did thoroughly enjoy it. It was a brisk read with three dimensional characters and a plot that wasn't terribly contrived. I will be picking up Cursed when it comes out in June.

This story is the most inventive magical adventure that I've read this year. The plot is unexpected and constantly accelerating. The main characters are engaging, and the other characters, like the dark and light mages, are extremely colorful. The magic is fascinating and entertaining. Alex Verus' probability magic never obviated free will or completely ruled out the possibility of mistake. Furthermore, other types of magic, from portals to various magical attacks, are well-described.
Alex Verus is a quirky and endearing protagonist. He sort of a magic geek explaining everything as he goes. He makes a running game out of the various choices confronting him and the various results that will occur. Furthermore, he's very limited and very human. He make mistakes and gets distracted, leading to entertaining twists in the plot. Although he doesn't have offensive magical abilities, he ingeniously uses his defensive seer abilities to somehow find his way.
In terms of the supporting characters I was most entertained by the child-like wind elemental Starbreeze. She's a delight. I also sympathized with the isolated and fearful Luna. And, I loved Arachne and her magically hidden cave system under Hampstead Heath.
Alex's past history with his dark mage master did remind me of the Dresden Files, but this story is adventurous and does not follow the mystery format of the Dresden books. Further, Alex is kind of a loner geek, he's not the sarcastic rebel like Dresden.
The only criticism I have of the book involves the later occurring flashbacks. IMO, they were somewhat disjointed and hard to follow. Another observation is the lack of English colloquialisms within the book. When reading contemporary British fantasy, I usually have to look up British expressions. But, this book is perfectly understandable. That's a good thing I suppose, but I kind of missed the Brit expressions.

P. S. I called the story an adventure rather than a mystery because, at least to me, there was no mystery about the infused gem and the artifact. I put those two things together the moment the statue was described, and knew immediately that Luna was involved. It took Alex longer to figure it out, but he does apologize in the text for not seeing the big picture. To me the story was an adventure which starts with a hapless probability mage being sucked into a magical controversy to obtain an artifact.

I finished this book last night and I agree with Dalnewt that it is more of an adventure than a mystery. I really enjoyed the book and the character development of both Alex and Luna. I am really looking forward to the next book in the series

I want to reiterate that I really enjoyed the book, but I still hope that in the next novel that Jacka plays up the differences between Alex and Harry. I don't really consider the Dresden Files mysteries either, for the same reason that dal doesn't consider this a mystery. Normally, the "mystery" is so easy to figure out that it isn't really a mystery at all, but more of an adventure.
As far as the similarities to Harry, I see Alex's antagonistic relationship to the Council of Mages, very similar to Harry's relationship with the White Council. His voice for me is very similar to Harry's as well. I would also argue that Harry is a loner as well, or he would be if the people who cares about him would allow him to be much like Alex seems to.
I did really enjoy the side characters and they really brought the novel to life for me and helped make it unique. I loved the characters of Starbreeze, Luna, and Arachne and I do hope that they continue to be fleshed out, in fact I wouldn't mind a couple of novels focused on just Alex and one of them, maybe Alex helping them out of a jam.

I finished Fated and really liked it. The characters added to the storyline for me. I want to find out more about them. The book ended too quickly for me and I would have liked more. I can see similarities to the Dresden series. But this book held its own and came through with a good start to the series.

I agree pen the ending left me feeling very specific thoughts that this was the beginning of a series, the characters I really liked too.

I'm also psyched that we don't have to wait FOREVER for the second and third installments. Cursed is hitting shelves at the end of May and Taken is scheduled to be released in August!

That is awesome. I love when series are just getting started, because it feels like you are finished with one book and then the next one comes out. Fantastic.
