The Wolf Gift by Anne Rice

[ Edited ]

A new series about werewolves by the vampire queen herself:

Here is the synopsis I got with my ARC ...release date : February 14th, 2012 Happy Valentine's Day to all my Were loving friends :smileyhappy:

A daring new departure from the inspired creator of The Vampire Chronicles ("unrelentingly erotic. . . unforgettable."), the Lives of the Mayfair Witches ("Anne Rice will live on through the ages of literature"), and the angels of The Songs of the Seraphim ("remarkable."). A whole new world-modern, sleek, high-tech, and at its center, a story as old and compelling as history-the making of a werewolf, re-imagined and re-invented as only Anne Rice, teller of mesmerizing tales, conjurer extraordinaire of other realms, could create it.

The time is the present.

The place, the rugged coast of northern California. A bluff high above the Pacific. A grand mansion full of beauty and tantalizing history set against a towering redwood forest.

A young reporter on assignment from the San Francisco Observer. . . an older woman, welcoming him into her magnificent, historic family home that he has been sent to write about and that she must sell with some urgency . . . A chance encounter between two unlikely people . . . an idyllic night-shattered by horrific unimaginable violence. . .The young man inexplicably attacked-bitten-by a beast he cannot see in the rural darkness . . . A violent episode that sets in motion a terrifying yet seductive transformation as the young man, caught between ecstasy and horror, between embracing who he is evolving into and fearing who-what-he will become, soon experiences the thrill of the wolf gift.

As he resists the paradoxical pleasure and enthrallment of his wolfen savagery and delights in the power and (surprising) capacity for good, he is caught up in a strange and dangerous rescue and is desperately hunted as "the Man Wolf," by authorities, the media and scientists (evidence of DNA threaten to reveal his dual existence). . . As a new and profound love enfolds him, questions emerge that propel him deeper into his mysterious new world: questions of why and how he has been given this gift; of its true nature and the curious but satisfying pull towards goodness; of the profound realization that there are others like him who may be watching-guardian creatures who have existed throughout time and may possess ancient secrets and alchemical knowledge and throughout it all, the search for salvation for a soul tormented by a new realm of temptations, and the fraught, exhilarating journey, still to come, of being and becoming, fully, both wolf and man.

Re: The Wolf Gift by Anne Rice

I hold out hope on this. It sounds like it will be a similar vein as Michael Cadnum's "Saint Peter's Wolf," one of the better werewolf novels out there. Unlike many, I didn't hold it against Rice when she turned to writing theological novels. That's what she needed to write at that point in her life. And maybe a period of not writing about vampires, et al. did her some good, and her passion for the supernatural has been refreshed. Here's to hoping, at any rate.

The Wolf Gift

Here is my review..which was BANNED from public view..for violation of TOS..which by the way B&N could care less about..this is the fourth review that has been banned and no one at B&N seems to care. My phone calls and emails all have been useless. I even called Bob Weis's office in NY..a toll call by the way and left a message with his secretary. His response..NADA..Zip. I know I am not the only one frustrated by B&N's lack of interest in correcting this problem..in fact there are whole boards dedicated to this frustration on facebook.

Can anyone  tell me why this was banned and what the heck I violated!!!!!!!

My rating 3.5 The Wolf Gift delves into the creation of werewolves and presents both philosophical and religious views and questions. The tale, which moved at a slow pace, was beautifully written, but lacked the luster I was looking for. Don’t get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed it; I just felt that overall it fell flat of my personal expectations.
Ruben, our protagonist, is the youngest son of a successful and educated family.  He has attended college and has basically moved through life as “the pretty boy”.  He dabbles as a writer and has contemplated writing a novel. His mother gets him a job at the San Francisco Observer.  He has success there and is asked to do a piece about an old, historical home.  On a weekend visit to the home, Reuben and the owner showing him the house are attacked by her wayward, greedy, brothers.  A creature steps in to save them; savagely killing the brothers.  The young woman dies, but Ruben miraculously survives.  It is at the hospital where he begins to notice a change.  His wounds are healing abnormally quickly; his blood work comes back showing high levels of hormones.  His hair, hands and feet are growing.  The tale that unfolds is fascinating as Rueben begins to learn what is happening to him.  The romance between Rueben and Laura; a young woman who has seen more tragedy in her lifetime then a soul should have to bear, is romantic and sweet.  I found the physical side of their relationship slightly creepy.  I love Rice’s attention to detail and the way she blends history, science and lore.  She beautifully paints an image of the redwoods and the mansion by the sea.  I would love to have coffee in the sunroom and enjoy evenings by the fire. The history she provides for the origin of this species is fascinating.
Overall, I enjoyed this novel and while I was captivated by the story, I never became so engrossed that everything else slipped away.  It did not give me that rush of urgency to complete that so many books provide. Despite my mixed feelings, if Wolf Gift becomes a series, I will purchase book two

I don't see anything wrong with the review either, and I've seen all the board postings all over B&N and FB about the "review problem." It's really quite ridiculous. I suck at writing reviews so I haven't personally had a problem, but I do read them to determine if I should shell out my hard-earned money for a book, so I am effected in that way, if I'm not able to see most reviews! I'll poke around a little myself- I'm usually really good at being persistent....

Aside from that, I'm glad to see your review of this book- I've been on the fence about Anne Rice for a while now, ever since I read one of her vampire spin-off books about 10 years ago that was so badly written I couldn't get past the first chapter. And trust me, I tried. I'm still not sure how I feel about Anne Rice and werewolves. I may hold off until a couple books have been written...

If you're normal, the crowd will accept you. If you're deranged, they'll make you their leader.

Re: The Wolf Gift by Anne Rice

WTH?  The review was fine.  There was no violation at all.  Weird.  B&N was just being lame.  I just love how a good review like this one get's denied, but those idiots that give a book a negative review because of e-book price, shipping complaints, grips against a previous book in a series, or (my favorite) complaints against the tv show of the books get to post their juvenile ramblings and lower the books rating. Hi-five on that one B&N.

Re: The Wolf Gift by Anne Rice

With all the complaints about the "new" review system you would think B&N would want to fix it.  I have come to the conclusion that maybe it is the "length" of the review vs the actual content.  I'm tired of the mods saying, "just send me the info and I'll help to approve it".  (Really, now we need the mods help to get it approved?) It seems that recently anything longer than say 10-15 words seems to be "flagged" for TOS.  I love B&N, but am really frustrated with them right now and their lack of response.  This well worded review is exactly what I look for when deciding if I want to get the book, now I'm having to go elsewhere to get actual reviews, it is really disheartening....

Paul,

I wasn't refering to you...I hope you know that.  I hang over on the NC boards most of the day, and people are always haveing to PM Alex to get the reviews through. I just wish it would be fixed already.  (And I'm a bit frustrated with CS ignoring me a bit to, so maybe I'm a little cranky today too.  Sorry everyone)  Maybe Margaritas all the way around will help?  My treat.  I come over here to read up on what others are reading/read. I guess this board has become my place to read reviews and add to my Library.

Re: The Wolf Gift by Anne Rice

Kimba - Nice review.  I don't see anything wrong with it.  Sounds like B&N need to double check their profanity filter.

I've been curious about this book.....I don't know if I will read it though.  Some of the later vampire books she wrote made me lose interest......

3MM - I agree with you on the stupid reviews that get posted.  Why do they let people rate a book that hasn't even been released yet??  Just because you love the series doesn't mean the new book will be any good.  And I'm sorry but bitchin about how much the ebook costs has no place in determining the quality of the story.  Ebooks really aren't that much cheaper to produce.  Honestly I stopped looking at the B&N reader reviews....I head over to Amazon to check out the ones there.
