Re: Upcoming Book Releases!!

Here are links to Tor's February Fiction Affliction lists: Fiction Affliction: February Releases in Urban FantasyFiction Affliction: Genre-Bender Releases in February and Fiction Affliction: February Releases in Paranormal Romance.

Scheduled for release 2/21, the premiere release for me this month is

A Perfect Blood.

A Perfect Blood

Interestingly the PW review mentions that this book is sufficient to explain the characters and world created in Harrison's Rachel Morgan books w/out resort to the earlier books. Oh yeah, PW also says that, "[F]ans will love it from start to finish."

Estep's popular Elemental Assassin series will release its sixth installment on 2/28:

By a Thread (Elemental Assassin Series #6).

And, in the Genre-Benders category, Fiction Affliction lists the fifth Parasol Protectorate book with a release date of February 28.

Timeless (Parasol Protectorate Series #5)

Some other Genre-Benders caught my eye include Anne Rice's

The Wolf Gift

The Wolf Gift

Library Journal

She's done vampires and witches and angels, so why not werewolves? Rice's latest, a modern retelling of the werewolf legend just announced for February 2012, is both a return and a departure. A return, because after spending a couple of books dancing with angels as she explored elevated spiritual issues in her new "Songs of the Seraphim" series, Rice is back with the bad guys. And a departure, because she hasn't visited this part of the horror pantheon before. The setting is the northern coast of California, and the main player is a younger reporter from the San Francisco Observer who has come to interview an older woman desperate to sell the family mansion deep in redwood forest. Alas, a nasty bite in the night means that our hero will soon be running from authorities who have targeted him as the Man Wolf. But as the very title suggests, Rice doesn't go just gory; that bite delivers a "gift" that pulls the Man Wolf toward goodness as well as temptation and opens him to the possibility that he is now one of the watching-guardian creatures that have existed since ancient times. Okay, so maybe not such a big return from heaven to horror, but this book has stirred enthusiasm from longtime Rice fans, who can anticipate a dark and gripping mood as well more philosophical reflections. One wonders how Rice's audience will take to these shifting currents and where the currents will take Rice next. With a 100,000-copy first printing; BOMC main selection.

There's also a promising horror book to be released 2/14 entitled

The Ritual

The Ritual

Publishers Weekly

"And on the second day things did not get better.” This suitably foreboding opening sentence sets the stage for a dark and mesmerizing horror debut that riffs on Algernon Blackwood’s classic story “The Wendigo.” Hutch, Luke, Dom, and Phil set off on a camping trip in the forests of Sweden, only to find the woods hostile to their explorations. Tensions arise when it becomes clear that two of the party aren’t physically up to the challenges of navigating the rough terrain, and fears set in with the discovery of an eviscerated “thing” hanging higher up in a tree then any animal would place it. Nevill makes the natural world deeply menacing, using the power of suggestion rather than explicit images to create a growing claustrophobic feeling as the difficult journey to return to some semblance of civilization embeds the quartet only further in the grasp of primal evil.

Described by Library Journal as "fluid, absorbing, and beautifully executed," a debut novel retells a classic Russian fairy tale about a child made from snow. Released on 2/1, the book is entitled The Snow Child

The Snow Child

In addition, the sequel to Wither (Chemical Garden Series #1) will be released 2/21:

Fever (Chemical Garden Series #2)

And, another promising YA dystopian novel was release on or about 2/1. It's entitled

Article 5.

Article 5

Publishers Weekly

In her debut novel, Simmons portrays a right-wing dystopian America still reeling from a vaguely described war. Seventeen-year-old Ember Miller lives quietly with her free-spirited mother, trying to avoid the puritanical Federal Bureau of Reformation and their increasingly stringent Moral Statutes. When Ember’s mother is arrested as morally suspect (she’s an unwed mother), Ember is carted off to a repressive reform school that is essentially a concentration camp. Worse, one of the soldiers involved in the arrest is Ember’s former boyfriend, Chase, now barely recognizable in military uniform. The novel details naïve Ember’s experiences first as a prisoner, then as a fugitive, with the emotionally scarred and secretive Chase as her companion. Heavy-handed in its delivery, the tale is well-written, though there are occasional clunkers (“I answered as assertively as I could. I was so mad my organs vibrated”). Simmons’s story includes a fair amount of believable action, a few mildly horrific events, and some not quite R-rated romance on its way to a conclusion that sets up the next installment in this planned trilogy

Thank you dalnewt. I had forgotten that Timeless is coming. This is one series where the cover art just never appealed to me, so I never looked at them. But there was an ebook special on the first 3 books and now I am hooked.

Re: Upcoming Book Releases!!

Here's the cover and B&N link to the fifth Downside Magic book which presently shows a release date of 6/26:

Chasing Magic

Chasing Magic

P.S. Compared to the first three books, this fifth cover is decidedly more stereotypically sexy and less mysterious/gritty.

Hmmm, the upcoming fourth installment, Sacrificial Magic, does seem to have a more sensual cover than the first three. Maybe it signaled a change toward sexier and less atmospheric covers? Personally, I liked the grittier covers more. Plus, I liked the direct/challenging gaze of the model in those first three covers.

[ Edited ]

For all those addicted to Seanan's McGuire's October Daye series, here's the B&N link for the next book to be release September 4:

Ashes of Honor.

Two new February releases caught my eye recently. Both are outside the usual contemporary UF parameters but look really good.

The first is a historical steampunk romantic adventure released 2/1 and entitled

Firelight

Firelight

Publishers Weekly

Debut author Callihan pens a compelling Victorian paranormal with heart and soul. Miranda Ellis has an unearthly talent for creating fire from thin air. Lord Benjamin Archer has lived for decades under the influence of a dark curse and wears a black mask over his disfigured face. After Miranda’s family is ruined, she weds Benjamin for his money and is surprised when passion and romance follow. Shortly after the wedding, Benjamin stands accused of a gruesome series of homicides. As he and Miranda hunt the true killer, Miranda soon sees the innocent, passionate man behind the mask, while wary Benjamin begins to trust in his wife’s love even though it endangers them both. Readers will cheer for the couple, especially when the obstacles piled in their paths appear unsurmountable. The compulsively readable tale will leave this new author’s fans eager for her next book. Agent: Kristin Nelson, Nelson Literary Agency. (Feb.)

Like moths to a flame, readers will be drawn to the flickering Firelightand get entangled in the first of the Dark London series. Combining Stephen King’s Carrie and Beauty and the Beast, Callihan crafts a taut tale filled with sexual tension. This is one of the finest debuts of the season.

Archer feels passion for his flame-haired bride, but she demands more than he can offer. Miranda begins to have suspicions about his actual age. If her young, virile husband is only in his 30s, why are his friends so much older? The  second is a romantic fantasy released February 7entitled:
Vengeance Born
Publishers Weekly

In Griffin’s well-drawn fantasy world, humans are oppressed and enslaved by the demonic Na’Reish. Annika is a Na’Chi, the result of cross-breeding between the races. She possesses powerful healing powers and her father, Na’Rei Savyr, is leader of the Na’Reish, but she’s nonetheless reviled, considered an abomination. When she rescues Kalan Tyn, leader of the human’s Blade Council, and asks his assistance in freeing the Na’Chi from the Na’Reish, the wheels of romance are deftly set in motion. A complex plot involving the Na’Chi freedom struggles keeps the taut and intricate narrative moving as Annika and Kalan slowly develop their emotional connection. Readers will look forward to future installments in a potentially long-running series. Agent: Elaine Spencer, the Knight Agency. (Feb.)

The Haunting of Maddy Clare
Kirkus Reviews
Sarah Piper, a self-proclaimed modern woman living in London, finds herself living a ghost story in this post–World War I tale. A temp agency offers Sarah a job with a mysterious, handsome writer, Alistair Gellis, who carries scars from the recent Great War. His postwar passion finds him writing travel books—as dry and academic as he can make them—about various haunted sites in England, but his interest is piqued by the case of a haunted barn in the small village of Waringstoke; a young maidservant hanged herself in her employer's barn and has been making mischief and threats ever since, most recently terrorizing a local vicar when he is called to perform an exorcism. According to her former employer, Mrs. Clare, Maddy, the ghost, hates men, so if Alistair is to verify the haunting for his next book, Sarah will have to confront the angry spirit. Feeling adrift in her life and intrigued by Alistair's company, Sarah agrees to the job, embarking on a terrifying journey into the damaged psyche of Maddy Clare. Capable of manipulating her environment and producing hallucinations, Maddy is not resting quietly. Not only must Sarah and Matthew Ryder, Alistair's tough and war-scarred friend, race to discover the truth behind Maddy's life and death, they are soon caught up in Maddy's troubling obsession with Alistair. Through fog, darkness, nightmares and fire, Sarah and Matthew fight to save their friend while also succumbing to their own heated attraction. Along the way, they meet all the mysterious figures one would hope to find in a small English town: the brash new-money aristocrat and his unhappy, beautiful wife; the distrustful gravedigger; the man who watches outside Sarah's window. And of course, Maddy, the one who connects them all and is either seeking peace—or revenge. A chilling start gives way to a more predictable ending, but fans of the modern Gothic novel will enjoy filling up a few creepy hours.

Re: Upcoming Book Releases!!

I was checking my Wishlist and came across

On Midnight Wings

I've really been looking forward to reading the fifth installment in the dynamic Maker's Song series. (The B&N web site as well as other sites lists a 2//1 release date, but the author previously indicated a March 2012 release.) Unfortunately, the release date has been delayed to December 2012 or January 2013. I'm disappointed but comforted by knowledge of the approximate time the book will be released. The author's blog remark about this delay is copied from her website below:

Book Five of The Maker’s Song (release date March 2013–see below*)

A DESPERATE SEARCH. A DARK AND DANGEROUS JOURNEY.
AND EACH STEP COULD DESTROY EVERYONE DANTE LOVES.
ONLY ONE MORTAL WOMAN CAN SAVE HIM . . .

As Dante Baptiste’s true identity as both True Blood and Fallen ripples throughout New Orleans, he and Heather struggle for their lives against different foes, fighting their way back to each other. To free herself from her father’s treachery, Heather accepts help from an ally–and steps into even greater danger. Dante, lost to his brutal past, wavers between his own sense of self and the Bad Seed-programmed S that lurks within, between the never-ending Road and the Great Destroyer. And the danger of becoming both.

. . . UNLESS THE FALLEN REACH HIM FIRST.

Lucien searches frantically for the lovers, all too aware that time is running out. Dark forces continue to gather, eager to possess and manipulate the young vampire for their own ends. The fate of mortals, nightkind, and the Fallen pivots around Dante as he struggles to piece together his shattered psyche and gain control of his power before he rips all three worlds asunder.

*I wanted to explain why the delay in the release of the fifth Maker’s Song book, On Midnight Wings. It’ll be released the end of 2012 or the first of 2013 (I’m hoping for a January release) due to my difficulty in hitting the deadline. Back when I was writing Beneath the Skin, I broke my ankle in Orlando at RT (and had to have surgery to repair it once I was home again), then suffered a double pulmonary embolism on the flight home. I can’t tell you how fortunate I feel to have survived that! But I fell behind on my deadlines at that point as I was recovering. I also sold a second series shortly prior to this, so now I was behind in two series. I’ve been racing ever since mid-2009 to catch up. This will finally give me that opportunity.

I’m hoping On Midnight Wings will be out the end of December 2012 and that the third Hoodoo book, Black Moon Mojo, will be out July of 2013 (if not sooner). I’m also working on a third series, Sons of Darkness, that I hope will be out in 2012. In the meantime, I’ll be posting short stories about the Maker’s Song characters and advance peeks from both On Midnight Wings and Black Moon Mojo to tide folks over.

My sincere apologies for the long delay! I appreciate your continued support and I will make it worth your while. I promise! Your support means more to me than you’ll ever know! Y’all ROCK!

So, I totally skipped over Phoenix's reasons for the delay. We're lucky to still have her! Release delays are inconsequential given her recent health problems. Thank god she recovered.

Y’all ROCK!

(See On Midnight Wings | ADRIAN PHOENIX AUTHOR OF DARK URBAN ....).

How could I have failed to notice the serious nature of Adrian's health problems? Sometimes I'm just too focused. I could always blank out everything going on around me in pursuit of what I wanted, and I wanted to know when On Midnight Wings would be released. So, I totally skipped over Phoenix's reasons for the delay. We're lucky to still have her! Release delays are inconsequential given her recent health problems. Thank god she recovered.

You didn't know?  There was a thread here after it happened to her...when she initially broke her leg.  Everyone was sending her get well wishes.  :-)

I vaguely remember the thread, but the reality and consequences of Adrian's health crisis didn't sink in until I read her blog comment above. I guess I didn't consider the extended period of recovery ahead of Adrian when I read that she was recovering in the hospital.
