Late last night I started reading the third (and final) book in Littlefield's Aftertime trilogy

Horizon (Aftertime Series #3). What a great book! I couldn't put it down! I read until my eyes gave out at page 242. I was up until 4 am. I can't wait to resume reading tonight but had to post this book because it is so damn good!

It's a completely compelling read. The main character, Cass Dollar, is a magnificent creation--ann enthralling character that combines debilitating fears with admirable courage. Cass is convincingly humanized. She's flawed but strong and inherently good.

The story starts with main characters (Cass, Ruthie, Dor and Sammi) living on three interconnected islands in a commune type of community called Eden. Smoke, Cass' previous love interest, is comatose although, unknown to Cass, he fights to regain consciousness in a tiny, makeshift  clinic. A flowing river sets them apart from the zombie like beaters who can be seen howling from the shore.

The story sets the emotional tone first with intense character interactions. I'm not going to give away the plot but intense is the word for the emotions exhibited by Cass and Sammi. Then the story turns to action when the beaters begin learning how to swim. After that, well, let's just say it's a heart thumping read. I can't wait to get back to it. Highly Recommended!

This one is – literally – on the horizon for me! Can't read to read it in a few days!!!

Re: What are you currently reading?

Just finished:

Wrong Side of Dead

OK...wow!  This book was excellent and I take back everything I said a couple of days ago.  LOL.  SciFi you were right, the ending was cute and there was  a lot going on in this book.  I looked around and I can't find her next book in this series...not a peep.  There are way too many loose ends though.  Loved it!!!!  What an excellent suggestion on a a series. Thanks!

Ok.  I am taking a little break because I was reading the latest edition of Playstation magazine (I know, I am a gaming geek) and I saw a blurp about George R.R. Martin in there.  I was interested in reading Game of Thrones (#1 in A Song of Ice and Fire Series).  I have never watched the HBO series, but I heard it was excellent.  I want to read the books first.  I'm sure Rachel Morgan will interrupt me soon, though!

Wow, that was a lot of writing, I am more of a reader. LOL

Currently reading:

A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire #1)

So far so good, not my usual genre, but we'll see.

HELP! I've fallen and can't reach my book!!!!

Re: What are you currently reading?

I had just finished reading A Discovery of Witches.  I must say, I was obsessed with this book.  When I wasn't reading the book (which was all of my free time)  I was thinking about this book.  I have already pre-ordered the second book in this trilogy on my nook.  After finishing this book I was looking for something in the same vein.  Couldn't find anything that made me as intrested as Discovery, so I looked through some old books that I purchased on my nook, but never read.  So I picked up A Game of Thrones, which I love as well.

Good to hear, LOL!  :-)  I'm sure there is another one...maybe see if she has a website?  It may not be listed anywhere yet, that's all.

My co-worker didn't read any Fantasy type books before and I recommended Game of Thrones to her...she got hooked on the first book and flew thorugh the series, LOL!  She loved them.  :-)

Re: What are you currently reading?

I finished up the newest Anya Bast book last week

Midnight Enchantment (Dark Magick Series #4)

Niall is hunting Elizabeth, a rare water fae, who is hiding the Summer Queen's pieces of the bosca fadbh.  Elizabeth proves almost impossible to catch since she can dissolve into water droplets at any time.  Good thing Niall has friends who can help him build the perfect trap.  But once she's trapped, he has to fight his admiration and feelings for her so he can get the job done.

Elizabeth is ready to give up her life if it means keeping the pieces hidden.  If the walls fall, her mother, a sprae dependent fae, dies.

This is yet another series that gets turned on it's ear.  It's hard to talk about the book without giving away the ending.....I will say that this could be the last book in the series.  Bast wraps up the main story arc, but I would like to see what comes next.  I didn't see anything on her website about whether or not there will be another book.

Now I'm trying to finish up a book by Kendra Leigh Castle so I can get on with the new releases!  I'm still debating on driving down to Atlanta for the Kim Harrison signing, so I'll read the new JD Robb book, Celebrity in Death, next.

My hardback copy was shipped to me today. I want the hardback, so I'll wait. The hell of it is that the hardback has been available in the B&N stores for the last couple of days. I know because I called my local B&N when the 'Pick Up In Store' option revealed that my store had the book in stock on February 19. I thought about canceling my pre-order and picking up the book, but it was much more expensive in the store--$15.80 on-line as compared with $26.99 in store.

With the membership and the hardcover discount mine was somewhere in the $19.00 range.  I love going to the store.  I want to keep a bookstore in my community.  I will pay the $4 extra for the privilege to browse and chat with my peeps!

Re: What are you currently reading?

Got my hardcover copy of:

A Perfect Blood (Rachel Morgan Series #10)

I got it yesterday!!!  I haven't had a hardcover in a while, well since the last Hollows release (I always get these in hardcover).  Yes, I smelled it right there at the B & N dispay...I am so weird and need some help.

I think I am on the road to recovery though, b/c I am waiting to read it (you read this correctly...I am WAITING).  I am totally into A Game of Thrones and I don't think it is the type of book you put down and pick back up.

It is really hard to wait...APB is just sitting there on my desk staring at me in all its glory, begging me to crack its binding!!!! Dang this is hard.  Sorry Rachel, I only have 650 more pages to go!  Blah.  :smileyhappy:

I just received my copy of A Perfect Blood yesterday, whoop, whoop!!  I am already 100 pages deep and it is hard for me to put it down.  I am trying to pace myself, but who am I kidding??  I devour these books. They are probably my favorite urban fantasy series.  I am just bummed that soon I will be done and I will have to wait a whole year for the next one.

Anna Dressed in Blood  Just finished Anna Dressed in Blood. I was completely sucked into the story from cover to cover. The descriptions of the scenery and the gore were astounding that it  practically made me visualize  it like I was actually seeing it with my own eyes! It reminded me of a cross between Ju On (The Grudge), especially when Clarke was giving descriptions of Anna's hair, and The Polteirgeist. I can't wait for the follow-up to this story coming out in August!

Wrong Side of Dead

Wrong Side of Dead

I'm on page 280. I really like the expansion of the character cast, but I keep trying to place exactly who all the characters are, especially all the human hunters. Phineas is great! Mad scientist Thackery, with his halfie army and pet werewolves, makes a great villain. And, the mystery of what the conspiracy is behind kidnappings, infections etc... is keeping me guessing.

But, I weary of the relationship drama. As the book began I was not adverse to an Evy/Wyatt split. IMO, too many UFs nowadays have lost excitement/tension because of a central romantic relationship. (IMO, Kim Harrison made the right decision when she killed off Kristen so Rachel could grow. And, Charlaine Harris wisely left Sookie's romantic options open.) So I thought maybe the Evy/Wyatt spit was for the best--now she had endless possibilities. Furthermore, it's always been a strained relationship. He brought her back from the dead so he could have her, and she didn't originally love him. Then, the book keeps revisiting, by means of flashbacks, the Evy/Wyatt split. Enough already! Move on! Plus, it doesn't help that their reasons for 'taking a break' are completely screwed up--especially his. Oh, he couldn't stay with her BECAUSE SHE SURVIVED. How F'd up is that!  I like freshness in a romantic relationship, but this DRAMA isn't really credible. Threats to a romantic relationship must have some sort of emotional authenticity, and these, especially Wyatt's, don't.

Despite the romantic DRAMA in this book, I still really like the darkness and grittiness in this book and the entire series. The acts of savagery taken by both sides in this book are fascinating. Plus, the underlying moral questions interest me. I can't think of any other UF series that is darker than this one. It kind of reminds me of the early Anita Blake books. I love it.
