Middle Chapters Discussion Topic: Smokey Joe

[ Edited ]

An important "character" in the book is the racehorse, Smoky Joe. Jeanine has a complex relationship with Smoky; she needs to sell him in order to have money to pay the back taxes, but she has a strong affection for him, perhaps because he was the one thing left by her father. Do you think Ross realizes this when he offers her part ownership of the horse?

I feel Ross wanted Jeanine in his life and Jeanine wanted Smokey in her life and so to complete the circle he must offer a %. - jd

Yes, definitely. And now I feel a bit guilty for being not quite sure about Everett.

Also, I think it was a way for him to give some money to Jeanine without doing so directly. He expected Jeanine to be too proud to accept financial help, so this was his way to be able to give it to her. Who knows if Smoky Joe even raced?
