It's based on the short story Fire in the Hole by Elmore Leonard, which is in the collection When the Women Come Out to Dance , (which also includes the story Karen Makes Out - the basis for the short lived show Karen Sisco) and features his character Raylan Givens who has appeared in the novels Pronto  and Riding the Rap  as well. I'm pretty sure Justified won't be headed into the plots of those novels, and I'd hope that it's going to be heavy on the serialization instead of mostly episodic formatting, but I think about what creator Graham Yost pitched to the execs as to where the show would head after the Fire.

Spenser For Hire of course made the late Robert B. Parker's iconic Boston PI the basis for three seasons worth of episodic capers. On the other hand Dexter based on Jeff Lindsay's novel Darkly Dreaming Dexter left the books behind after pretty faithfully adapting the first over the course of a season. Now we have two Dexter series, one in print and one on television. Kinda like, (but not quite as separate as) the Jason Bourne of Robert Ludlum's trilogy and that of the post cold war films. I enjoy both incarnations, but c'mon they ain't near the same beast. I suppose you could make the case there are three different incarnations if you include Eric Van Lustbader's series.

So, yeah, back to Justified... Where they going? I'd hate to see Givens grow stale or un-Leonard-esque by straying too far from the source, but I'd also love to see him take on new dimensions. I'm curious, what do you Elmore Leonard fans think? How much reign you wanna give Yost and compay? Are you a fan of Justified so far?

It's only aired two episodes so far and what I'm sure of, (so far), is the tone. So many Leonard adaptations, (Glitz, Stick, Be Cool, The Big Bounce, Pronto and on and on) have an unbalanced take on the material - they make thrillers without the weirdness or wacky comedies without danger. Films like Jackie Brown and Out of Sight that strike that balance are too rare. Justified has the feel right. Will they keep it up? I dunno.

OK, I will give Justified a try. I like what I have read of Elmore Leonard. It all seems to fit that I would like this series.

Everybody should read more Elmore Leonard. We could make a difference

I don't think Justified will ever make me forget Sons of Anarchy but it does have some entertaining story lines and characters, some of whom pop up in Riding the Rap. That said, Leonard is an American treasure, from his pulp Westerns (Hombre) to his crime novels (Get Shorty, Tishomingo Blues) to historical fiction (Cuba Libre).

I just loaded Riding the Rap, which has a section of "Extras" - like the DVDs - which are worth the price of admission alone. Leonard's essay If it Sounds Like writing, Rewrite it  and his interview with Martin Amis both give a unique insight into this man's facile mind.

I'm with you, man. I hope if there's a season 2, it gets more serialized, but as it is, I can take it like a pleasant light snack every once in a while. Leonard is the man.

I know there's a "back story" of sorts - what with Winona and Ava and his father and the like - but it's thin at best, and too spotty. We're left with guessing who he's going to blow away this week (we don't even care - we just know it was "justified"). It makes for some uneven scripts, with little emotional or intellectual interaction. It's just a good thing Tim Olyphant is a good actor.

And yet I come back to it every week! Go figure. Must be the "Leonard factor".

You ever Abel Ferrara's Cat Chaser? Not great, but an interesting take on Leonard.

by NookwormNY on 04-20-2010 06:31 PM

I vaguely recall the name, but I haven't read it. I'll have to track it down. Tx.

Cat Chaser the novel is pretty standard Leonard stuff... The MOVIE Cat Chaser is just kind of a strange take on his material, (to my mind). Most filmmakers overdue the hip/jazzy vibe, but this one's pretty downbeat. Not bad. Not great. Not bad.
