Today marks the release of mega-bestselling author James Patterson's latest novel, Toys. Patterson fans can learn all about his latest endeavor with this Ransom Notes Q&A...including which of the fantasy toys from his new book he most wishes were real!
What is your new book Toys about?
Toys is a thriller set fifty years into the future. The society of Toys is interesting—the humans are now the bottom of the food chain. Elites are a new race, one that’s been genetically engineered to a T. Part human, part computer, and superior to humans, which sets the conflict for the book. And then we have the “toys,” the gadgets that have pretty much taken over everyone’s lives—which has a pretty fatal outcome once they start turning on everyone.
What inspired you to come up with Toys?
The digital age is moving so fast, daily life is leaning more and more into devices (like the one you’re probably reading this interview on) and new technology. I knew I could create a pretty cool story with the idea of this addiction taking a really dark turn.
How would you describe your new character, Hays Baker?
Hays is a hero from the get-go: a great dad to his two little girls, a loving husband, and he’s among the most respected agents at work. His status as an Elite is challenged, and he’s forced to go on the run—in the process showing off just how clever and tough he can be. A James Bond for the future but with a very different sort of charisma.
You set this book in 2061. What’s the future like?
Think about the wealthiest parts of the most metropolitan areas in the world, which are now all supported by the most high-tech circuitry. Then think about the poorest ghettos and place the two side-by-side.
What toy that you came up with for this book would be at the top of your Christmas list?
The iJeeves butler would be pretty nice! He could bring me endless Diet Cokes so I can keep pen on paper all day long. As long as he doesn’t turn on me…
James Bond and Jason Bourne have just been topped! A battle for the world is set into unstoppable motion and Hays Baker is the only one who can save it.
Hays Baker and his wife Lizbeth possess super-human strength, extraordinary intelligence, stunning looks, a sex life to die for, and two beautiful children. Of course they do—they're Elites, endowed at birth with the very best that the world can offer. The only problem in their perfect world: humans and their toys!
The one with the most toys—dies
The top operative for the Agency of Change, Hays has just won the fiercest battle of his career. He has been praised by the President, and is a national hero. But before he can savor his triumph, he receives an unbelievable shock that overturns everything he thought was true. Suddenly Hays is on the other side of the gun, forced to leave his perfect family and fight for his life.
Now a hunted fugitive, Hays is thrown into a life he never dreamed possible—fighting to save humans everywhere from extinction. He enlists all of his training to uncover the truth that will save millions of lives—maybe even his own. James Patterson's Toys is a thriller on a hyper plane—with a hero who rivals both James Bond and Jason Bourne.
