I think we can all agree that the film world isn’t perfect. The simple truth is that more of the movies that I want to see feature men in the starring roles, but that’s attributable to many factors, not the least of which is my personal taste in movies. I am not blind to certain realities, I just don’t want to hear any more complaining about it, okay? I’d rather we take a more constructive approach to the problem.

Two things I've learned: many talkies have their origin in books and too many producers can’t read. So, rather than moan about the lopsidedness of it all, I thought we could make a quick list of books that could be adapted with “interesting” (notice I didn’t say “strong”) roles for women to help them out. Those poor under-resourced producers.

These are film projects I’d like to see. My taste is pretty spectacular incidentally.

One of the best surprises of the last few years for me was Dope by Sara Gran about a woman in 1950s New York who’s kicked her heroin habit, but maintains a petty criminal lifestyle of shoplifting and small time graft to make a living. Her life changes when she’s hired by a wealthy couple to re-enter the drug underworld she clawed her way out of to find their teenaged daughter that has disappeared and, they fear, become an addict. It’s a tough, tense book with a lot of heart to break.

Recently I caught up on a great little book about the murder of a teenage girl that shakes up a small Ozark town, Dahlia's Gone  by Katie Estill. This book has got at least three great roles for women – the Sheriff’s deputy working the case, the step-mother of the victim and the victim’s neighbor, through whose eyes the story is primarily told. I won’t go into the complexities of each character, you’ll have to read it yourself, but it’d make a great dramatic picture with terrific, lyrical dialogue already built in.

Theresa Schwegel wrote a fierce debut novel, Officer Down about a rookie female cop in Chicago and the royal mess her already less than tidy life becomes when her partner is killed in a possible friendly fire episode. As big a fan I am of (Oscar Nom) Kathryn Bigelow, I'd love to see her tackle this one. Though she visited similar (just barely really) territory in Blue Steel, I guarantee this one'd be better. A lot better.

Last year introduced Stella Hardesty, a character that it seems almost inconceivable will not become the anchor of a wildly popular series, in Sophie Littlefield's A Bad Day for Sorry. After killing her abusive husband with a wrench, at the mid-century mark, Stella finds her services suddenly in demand. Could she maybe help some other abused women solve their problems? Look for the next Stella Hardesty title A Bad Day for Pretty  in June.

And for the really adventurous, I propose the dark, sexy riff on the legacy of James M. Cain, Miami Purity by Vicki Hendricks. This one calls for a really gutsy actress, but the pay off could be huge.

And now I’ve done my part. How about you? What books would you like to see made into films?

Can I have some cheese with my whining please Jedidiah ;-).

And I personally thing that the perfect film would be one where the male lead or hero not only needs the female lead or the heroine's input but wants and looks forward to it. That he not only relies on her intuition and knowledge but requests it.

Here are my choices:

Amanda Quick aka Jayne Anne Krentz's Slightly Shady starring Lavinia Lake and Tobias March who are Regency England's version of Holmes and Christy and solve crimes of the Ton.

Next is any of the Alex Cooper series written by Linda Fairstein who's character is based on her own past as an assistant DA of the Sex Crimes division in New York City.

And now for the paranormal fans let's see Linda Lael Miller's series about

Mojo Sheepshanks brought to the big screen

Or how about Dacre Stoker's  (Great Grand Nephew of Bram) Dracula the Undead who's female lead, Mina Harker,  is equal to all the male leads in the novel and an incredible novel it was

Okay those are my choices

Right. A Vicki Hendricks' book to film sure would be risky! And speaking of X-Rated, how about Christa Faust's Money Shot?!?

Deb - thanks for the recs

Chris - Have you seen Christa's Money Shot sequel is coming out in January?

by ChrisSnyder on 03-05-2010 10:44 AM

Really? I can't wait! "Money Shot" was amazing. I'll even throw the guantlet and say that it ranks among the top 5 Hard Case Crime books!

Chris - Oh, yeah and Vicki Hendricks has a short story collection coming in... May? Her short pieces are among my favorite

I'd love to see Officer Down on the big screen. Schwegel's background in screenwriting makes the characters jump off the page. The novel is meant to be a movie. With Queenpin and Dope, I'd love to see it, but it seems like so many production companies are shying away from period pieces. Dope would make a fantastic television show, though.

And I'd heard that several of Abbott's novels were in some form of production or other, do you have any idea what's happening with those?

And how about Laura Lippman?

Every Secret Thing seems like it would be a screenwriter's dream to adapt

by Blogger Jedidiah-Ayres on 03-06-2010 10:51 AM

Last I heard, Megan's Die a Little was in some stage of development and an updating to take place no.... I don't know about others, but I know she's got a graphic novel coming soonish. Curious about that one.

Lippman is somebody I figured everybody in Hollywood was all over already, though I haven't heard about any productions from her stuff. I'm a fan of her short stories especially.

Jed, Man you continue to amaze me ! Ive read 6 of the 7 & could'nt agree more with your selections. Vicki's stuff is pretty strong and would be interesting. Officer Down would make a great movie no doubt & Christa Faust Money Shot will be one to watch as well.

Rod - thanks. Happy to amaze.
