A bestselling author, who for the time being shall remain anonymous, recently wrote, "Mysteries are serious literary fiction proudly - defiantly - masquerading as genre fiction."

With that said; if you're a mystery reader, or a fan of great writing period, then this blog is the place for you. Each week, Ransom Notes will bring you reviews, reactions, and general musings on the deadly craft of crime fiction.

To celebrate October's Mystery Month and the launch of Ransom Notes, we've asked some of the biggest authors in the field to contribute personal pieces on what mysteries mean to them! Starting next Monday, and continuing through December, you'll find daily postings from the likes of Anne Perry, T. Jefferson Parker, John Sandford, Louise Penny, Robert Crais, Megan Abbott, Katherine Hall Page, and many, many more!

Now back to that anonymous quote. The author who wrote it will be contributing to Ransom Notes as well, so eventually you'll find out who it is, but if you think you can solve the case of their mysterious identity, we offer up the following clues:

  • I was born in Paris in 1955
  • Writing runs in my family
  • I've written a libretto for an opera based on my work
  • I read the first and last pages of a book - in 20 page alternating sections - until they meet in the middle.

Happy Sleuthing!

Okay. Try this one.

- I have worked in law enforcement in a big Eastern American city but my love for the American West is showcased in my novels. In fact, I now make my home in the West, living in a town with a population of 25. Oh, and always put your cowboy hat down crown first!

Did any of you see this? DiCaprio to star as Travis McGee. I never would have pictured Leo in this role, but I bet he pulls it off.

by Moderator becke_davis on 09-30-2009 01:38 AM

DiCaprio is a brilliant actor -- if anyone can pull it off, he can.

Rats, I'm sorry I missed today's quiz. My husband and I were driving to Chicago -- that is to say, he was doing the driving, while I finished Roxanne St. Claire's August release -- just in time for her new book, which came out today!

by on 09-30-2009 04:46 AM

I don't know DiCaprio always comes of as a kid to me. Never has looked like an adult.

by on 09-30-2009 04:51 AM

"Rats, I'm sorry I missed today's quiz."

I'll try to post another contributor clue later today, Becke.

Try this one...

-Although our books appear authored by one person, we are actually two.

-We're related.

-Our books have been nominated for the EDGAR and the ANTHONY award.

-Our main character is literally haunted by his wartime experiences.

by Moderator dhaupt on 09-30-2009 09:10 AM

Ok  Paul I'm going to guess Charles Todd (fingers crossed)

by Moderator dhaupt on 09-30-2009 09:15 AM

Good Morning Vermont, how's the weather up there. I'm going to put it on the list, but I'm afraid the list is a long one and I have commitments on reading other things first. Alas there is never enough time in the day and there's this pitiful thing called earning a living that I have to partake of to keep me in books. ;-)

But it is going on that list.  Hmmm never had Green Mountain Coffee but the Apple crumb cake, definitely.
