Re: frozen Nook

You're forgetting some important steps:

After taking out the battery, you need to plug the Nook into the charger.  This should cause the nook to reboot.  While the nook is rebooting, feel free to put the battery back into the Nook.  Don't unplug the nook for an hour or so after.  It needs to recharge.

I did that...it stayed frozen

Summary of Methods Tried to Unfreeze Nook

After reading through more posts regarding this issue than I can stomach, I decided to write out my story that should basically summarize every method I know of to unfreeze your Nook. Anyone with other methods is encouraged, nay, begged to post them.

After receiving my Nook yesterday, Jan. 13 around 4Pm est., I proceeded in following instructions to the T. After unpacking my Nook, I proceeded in plugging it into the nearest outlet to allow it to charge for the recommended 3.5-4 hours. After plugging it in for about 20 minutes and reading some things, I noticed the charge indicator light was not on (nor was it ever on).

After combing through this forum and its threads, I tried to recommended trick of removing the battery, plugging the Nook into the USB via a computer and replacing the battery to allow it to charge. (The User Guide has instructions for getting to, and removing, the battery for those who are just as clueless as I was.)

To my surprise, and with a great sigh of relief, the Nook proceeded to boot up just as others had in the past. Unfortunately for me, however, it proceeded to stop charging after about 45 minutes to an hour. I walked over to the Nook, noticed it was in a sleep mode, and saw the charge indicator light off.

After picking up the Nook and noticing that it was as dead as an electronic device can be, proceeded in pouring through threads trying out suggestions as resuscitating my Nook. "Pumping" the power button at least 5 times (if not 50) did not work.

In addition, removing the battery and repeating the process I had before did not work. May I add that last night I plugged in the Nook to charge over night in case it was so dead that it need 12 hours to get to a state where the charge indicator light would have enough power to turn on. I tried holding down the power button at every possible interval (5 sec. 10 sec. 30 sec. 1 min, 5 min etc.) to no avail. In addition, holding down any combination of buttons has not worked for me.

In a side note, my computer recognized the Nook the first time I tried the battery trick and after properly "Ejecting" the Nook before disconnecting it, it has not since recognized it. I can plug in this USB cable until I am blue in the face but it refuses to make a connection.

As a result of such problems, I have come to the conclusion that I am not allowed to own a Nook without first helping, in any way possible, others with Nook problems. Currently, now a full 24hrs since my Nook arrived, it is sitting on my bed, still plugged into the wall, mocking me with its blank, white screen.

Comments and suggestions are greatly appreciated and I hope this thread both contributes and aids others looking for the same answers I am.

Known problem with some versions of Windows.

(Common on Vista/Win7, but also seen with other versions).

Try your yank-battery-plug-in resusitation trick with the wall charger.

I tried that method as well but, unfortunately, with the same results. I will go try it on a Windows XP computer though, just in case I get lucky. Thanks for the tip.

Edit: Tried the XP computer, no luck :smileysad:

The only thing I can say if you are at the same point as me, meaning it was up and running once and is now fully dead, is to get ready to get a CS person on the phone to arrange for a return. I think I've tried every possible thing and have not received a single reaction out of this thing. Until then....let's keep trying :/ Oh, and when you aren't trying to fix it yourself, keep it plugged in at all times. I read that some people had miraculous returns from the dead after like an entire day of being plugged in and simply hitting the power button.

Thanks for the insights - maybe I'll be saying a novena to St. Anthony ... keep me posted if you have an Easter on your hands!

Haha, that got a laugh out of me. Hey, it worked wonders growing up so I don't see why not now! My SNES always worked after I slapped it around a bit, but I'm a little hesitant to resurrect that method :smileyhappy:

I DID IT!!!! Hold down the power button for like 45 seconds and plug it into the wall ... I went to a different room in my house and it re-booted or something ... it has risen! Maybe it'll walk on water next? Good luck!

There are a lot of other threads on this with some other hints.

Some of them entail holding down side buttons, etc.

I can't help but thinking that leaving the battery out for 30 minutes would have to revert the machine to a deadstart state.  Maybe push a few buttons while battery is out, and don't put battery back in till it starts while plugged into the wall.

Check for stuck buttons too, by making sure each one clicks.

Re: Summary of Methods Tried to Unfreeze Nook

Well done! I must say I am a bit jealous. Did you have it unplugged, hold it for 45 seconds, let go and then plug it in? If not give me precise instructions haha I'm desperate!

Re: Summary of Methods Tried to Unfreeze Nook

Okay ... as I was holding it down I went to a completely different outlet that I had not used yet ... then as I still had it held down, plugged it in and held it just a little longer ... hopefully this will jar it awake ... I had not said my prayer to St. Anthony yet but hey - whatever works! [all girls catholic school is forever seared in my psyche] Hope it works - keep me posted!

Re: Summary of Methods Tried to Unfreeze Nook

Wierd...

I wonder if the first outlet was switched (like for a lamp) and was off?

Or maybe just the interval while it was unplugged made the difference.

Was battery out or in for this episode?

Re: Summary of Methods Tried to Unfreeze Nook

I might need to borrow that prayer, no luck for me. I will try to modify the method though, since I have not much else to do at the moment but pray and try to fix this thing. Glad to see yours is fixed though, enjoy a few pages for me would ya :smileyhappy:

Are you kidding me? I didn't even know there was a battery and I have a habit of breaking things once I get tools out so no ... the battery was not out and I thought about the whole outlet/lamp/switch thing but that wasn't the case either ... but I am a little worried ... my computer never recognized the Nook ... should I be worried?

Re: Summary of Methods Tried to Unfreeze Nook

Well Bruce, you are handling this nook problem much better than I am right now. I love your sense of humor. I on the other hand am highly disapointed in the Nook. I got mine around the same time you did and have had freeze up problems when I open books. I have called customer support for days to no avail as the hold time is terrible and when you are using a cell phone...good bye minutes. I also think their operating hours are too short for the working class. I did talk to a Barnes and Noble representative who did agree with me that the Nook is defective and I will be returning it. I am still wondering if I should try another Nook or just wait until the Nook makers get it right. Now I am trying once again to get through to support to do a return.

Disappointed.

Re: Summary of Methods Tried to Unfreeze Nook

As was mentioned above, there appear to be some issues with operating systems recognizing the nook, I am on Windows 7 and it recognized mine the first time, but has not since then. Keep trying, restart your computer maybe, or if possible, try another computer.

Re: Summary of Methods Tried to Unfreeze Nook

I think my humor is the only thing keeping me from putting my Nook through a wall. I haven't begun the process of speaking with someone about it, but I will be tomorrow if tonight produces no results. I think you might want to try again with another Nook, I think this thing has some great potential (even though I am feeling a bit screwed at the moment). If you are still unsatisfied, you can always return it :smileyhappy:
