Re: new firmware... problems with new files (checking for new files)

@valdemar

Oi, Amizade! :smileyvery-happy:

How "long" is a "long time"?  Are we talking about a freeze, 30 seconds to a minute, or several minutes?

How many files are you sideloading?  I  have noticed that my Nook does take a little longer (and seems to take a little bit longer on 1.4 than it did on 1.3) to recognize a lot of new files at a time, but by "a little bit longer" I mean 30-45 seconds, not more.

You are loading big PDFs, aren't you?  That may be having an effect.

Thanks, V -- all fine! :smileyvery-happy:
That's strange.  Mine recognized my 16GB card, no problem.  Have you tried putting the 16 GB card in, then rebooting, then looking at Settings to determine whether the Nook is seeing the card?
And remember with Nook -- if a fix doesn't work the first time, try it again.  My experience is that Nook often requires multiple tries.  Nook is an exception to the usual definition of "insanity".

Re: new firmware... problems with new files (checking for new files)

wel... reconignezing now card again... ufff...

but the problem to check more than 1 giga files stored still a problem...

=/

with 1.2 and 1.3 firmware this works very fine... so this is not problem of operator, cuz r SAME FILES and SAME PROCESS, and SAME EQUIPMENTE... the only diference is the firmeware...

i think a solution for manager of files in BN reader ir urgently... more than WIRELESS problems or issues... whats matter make nook a BUY MACHINE ONLINE if  the manager soft make users suffer?

Glad the card works -- that's progress :smileyhappy:

Your sideloaded files are 1GB and bigger?  Those are very big files for Nook to handle, compared to normal eBook files.  Maybe that's why your Nook seems slow:  it needs the time to organize files that big for display.

That's out of my depth technically -- maybe Michael_V or some of the more technical posters will have additional insights.

Re: new firmware... problems with new files (checking for new files)

no... alll files r smalll... but i got maaaaanyyyy of them...

7xx to be more exacly :smileyvery-happy:

between articles, teses, papers, ebooks...

the bigger has 3xx megabytes...

the problema is: old firmware reconigzed big number of files (over 5giga files, not 1 file but all files together) in few instants, and now, same with 800 mega, or 4 giga spent a lot of time...

and as i said... same proceed, same equip, SAME FILES!!! and same operator...

maybe i must give a little doses of alcohool to operator !!!!

Re: new firmware... problems with new files (checking for new files)

I don't have that many sideloads, but some are very large PDFs.

My nook is very quick to update its index after adding and deleting.   I do all sideloads with Calibre an it is very fast.  Usually after Ejecting, I don't even have to check for new content in "my documents", it is already up to date.

I wonder Valdemar, you are doing an Eject or a safe remove?

There is a difference, and the Eject is preferred.  (Nook automatically removes the USB cable image from the e-ink display on an Eject).

@valdemar

Note icebike's question an hour ago on "Eject" vs. "Remove" -- this could help.

700 files seems like a lot for Nook to keep track of, with a theoretical maximum of around 1500.  Almost half.

That always helps!  Soon you won't even care about those files.  My recommendation is Serra Grande, straight up.  :smileywink:

Re: new firmware... problems with new files (checking for new files)

I am having the same problem!

I tried to sideload 82 books through Calibre on to my 4gig microsd, all had been previously converted to epubs.

Nook said"checking for new files" for nearly an hour.

I found on another forum that my Nook may have frozen, and to try rebooting it.

I did so, files still didn't show up.

I hooked the Nook back up to the laptop and peek at the microsd card - all the books are there neatly organized in folders according to author.

I eject Nook - says "checking for new files" for a few minutes. Books have not shown up. My Documents says "no files" not even user guide.

Hooked Nook back up to laptop - deleted everything from microsd - started over again.

Sideloaded one book - OK! It shows up!

Sideloaded 6 books - OK! They show up!

Sideloaded 10 books - not OK, they don't show up on Nook, do show up when I have it plugged into the laptop. :smileysad:

I started over again and only loaded the 5 books in the series I am currently reading.

The reason I bought the Nook was to have 1500+ books to choose from whenever I want, and to be able to load the eBooks I already own. Loading them one at a time would take hours. At first I thought it was a problem with the Calibre program, or with one of my files. But now that I see these problems only happening since the firmware update, I'm a little upset.

Re: new firmware... problems with new files (checking for new files)

well... i made some tests... and voi lá... i got something... now i push 672 files (over 4,5 giga) in microsd card, and nook recognizes them...

what i did?

FIRST: EJECT , like ICE said, EJECT CARD...

SECOND: EJECT NOOK...

i have some words to say...

thos proceed is a litlle nocive for us... as we know, a USB port is a location to Transport DATA AND POWER!!!! so its very dangerous we stay playing in that spot...

the correct way is: UMOUNT DEVICE... not eject!!!!

but if only way to work for now, if our nooks brokes, who will pay for thiss???  ourselfs problably... so i think suport dont willl solve problem so fast...

i repeat: this is a parcial solution that expose our equipment to risks to danger!!!

Re: new firmware... problems with new files (checking for new files)

I am also having the same problem--checking for new items takes a very long time and does not always recognize books that are on the nook.  I am using calibre to sideload about 600 items and I always use the eject buttons to disconnect.
