Given the mountain of risks faced by May in gaining new vision, why did he choose to go forward? Did he do the right thing in going forward? How does one assess that kind of choice?

Since this has the question, did he do the right thing in going forward, I think I will hold off on answering here because it could be a spoiler to many people even tho its not a novel, because of the many things that happen in his life that they may not have read yet.

Right at the beginning of the story, after Mike loses his sight at age 3, he is continually trying all the things sighted people do. Even with the risks, I feel it's part of his nature and personality to try new things.
