Re: Are you a Jane Austen lover? Or a mere acquaintance?

I do think that Julia Q has a great Austenian touch -- she's very good with the daily life of her characters.  They drink tea, they chat, they go for walks:  it's not all storms and crisis all the time.  Bmbrennan, I hate to make you jealous, but *g* The Lost Duke of Wyndham (Julia Q's next) just arrived on my desk in an ARC!

There are some wonderful bits to writing this column!

Eloisa,
I actually love Measure for Measure. Are we in the minority?

You must have been your professor's dream student!  That would be like me discovering that one of my students had not only read, but liked, Shakespeare's Measure for Measure.  I would be so happy!

Re: Are you a Jane Austen lover? Or a mere acquaintance?

My TBR pile wasn't quite big enough (I'd say "tall" enough but that implies that it's a single pile...) so I added a new copy of Persuasion plus Eloisa's recommendations.

I just realized I have a personal favorite to add to the list:  the late Melissa Nathan's Pride, Prejudice and Jasmin Field.  I recently found out, to my aggravation, that this book has been reissued under the title Acting Up or something like that.  I ordered a copy from England since it was being released there first.

It just arrived, and the first thing I see when I flip the book open is:  "now released under a new title."  I hate that!!  But, no matter what title they use, it's a fun book.

I agree with you about loathing books released under new titles - but it sounds like fun and I'll definitely pick it up, no matter the title!

The truth is that students have trouble with Measure for Measure--but I love it.

Re: Are you a Jane Austen lover? Or a mere acquaintance?

The first time I read Jane Austen was not a smooth ride.  It took a few tries to wrap my mind around her subtle wit and carefully crafted characters.  I just wasn't sure where the story was going.  Today, I love her stories and the many additional ones she has inspired.

I would agree with what has been said, Julia Q fits well in Jane's tradtion.  Then there is Helen Fielding who created Bridget Jones.

Re: Are you a Jane Austen lover? Or a mere acquaintance?

Hi Eloisa, I started reading Jane Austen books at a pretty young age...maybe 12 or 13...the very first book I read by here was Persuasion, then Sense and Sensibility, Emma and finally Pride and Prejudice...as I got older, I found, bought and read the other books she wrote as well...Pride and Prejudice was also my fav with S&S and close second...I love Victorian Literature, with Jane Eyre by Bronte being my absolute fav, but I love Austen's work as well...back then, this was the most romance I could actually read without blushing....lol...I just recently started rereading some of Austen's works...did anyone watch The Jane Austen Book Club? It was a fascinating movie...it was interesting the parallels that were drawn between the lives of the members of the Club and those of the characters in the books they were in charge of leading the discussion for...I absolutely loved it...
Peace and love,
Paula R.

I definitely fit in the catagory of lover. Every since high school and that has been quite a few years, I have admired her and her works. I have read all about her works and books written by other authors fiction and non fiction about her. I am reading The True Darcy Spirit now and have read Mr. Darcy's daughters. both  by Elizabeth Aston.

Re: Are you a Jane Austen lover? Or a mere acquaintance?

[ Edited ]
Eloisa - Thanks for your book recommendations, as always.  I complain about my TBR pile but I love finding all these great authors.  I just finished reading Jane Austen in Scarsdale and I loved it -- next up is Me and Mr. Darcy.

Jane Austen in Scarsdale resonated with me because it wasn't so long ago I was going through the whole SAT/ACT, college application trauma along with my two kids.

My daughter ended up transferring colleges halfway through but had a good experience and learned a lot -- she graduated in December.  My son was like some of the kids in the book -- a high achiever who only wanted to apply to the top schools (he didn't make it to Harvard, which was his stretch, but he did get in to U Chicago, his first choice).

My husband and I got married at 19 and never even went to college so the process was as new to us as it was to our kids.  (I was in England with my husband the week I was supposed to start college and never looked back.)

I would have had a nervous breakdown if I'd read this book in the middle of my son's application process.  Now he's on track for grad school at one of the best schools in the country so I was able to read Scarsdale with a smile of fond remembrance.  Great book!

Two things:

1) The only minor detail I had a problem with was on page 195 where the author writes:  "There were also the rock enthusiasts who insisted the Beatles were great poets and made a racket in the hall with their electric guitars."  Unless they were hauling amps down the halls with them, those guitars wouldn't have generated much racket since they were electric.

2) If anyone else was as curious as I was about the poet Don Riggs who is mentioned on page 198, I found a book of poems that he edited here at BN.com; it also includes some of his own poetry.

Re: Are you a Jane Austen lover? Or a mere acquaintance?

Dear Becke,
U Chicago is an amazing school -- kudos to your son!  As someone who went to Harvard, I think I'd direct my son to UC first.  Not that I didn't love it, but it's gone over-the-top, in my opinion.  At any rate, it's amazing that poet was real!  What fun.  I'll go take a look...

Yeah, I'm a proud mama, as you can tell (of both kids).  Next up is the grad school application process which we're leaving in his hands.  I'll be curious to see where he ends up.

You teach at Fordham now, don't you?  My daughter is debating whether to go for her masters in English/Creative Writing or to just try and get a job in editing. Her professor recommended Emerson College in Boston but after living in Florida, I'm not sure my daughter could handle a Boston winter!

By the way, I ordered the book of poetry Don Riggs edited (and contributed to).  I'm really interested to read it.
