Reader Input

I've a question for anyone interested in answering.  If you read the following line a book, without any further clarification, what would your interpretation be?

Then there was the night he'd ran the gauntlet. Breaking the rules ran in the family.

Thanks!! Monica

Re: Reader Input

MonciaBurns, sounds like he is running a challenge. Doing something that is against the rules and his family. Also sounds like he is trying to prove something to everyone. That he is his own man, a grown man that can handle whatever problems and challengers comes his way.

He solves these issues his way. He may consider others opinions then makes his decision based on what is best for him.

Let me know what you think.

That was a cool question.

Re: Reader Input

Thanks, Patti!  I might need to expand a touch in the book, but you gave me exactly what I was looking for. Will be interested in other opinions and observations too!

Re: Reader Input

Hi Monica - I read the post right after you put it up and I've kind of had it rattling around in my brain - I got a distinctly military feel from it. That there was a challenge, and it was solved, but not in a traditional or orthodox way. Does that make any sense? It brought to mind a Star Trek episode that someone asked Capt. Kirk how he solved a certain problem in the Star Fleet Academy (he was the only one who had) - I believe he replied that he did it in a VERY unorthodox way. Anyway, that's how it seemed to me...

Re: Reader Input

oooohhh yes, it does have a bit of the military feel to it, but then these guys are Assassins from the ancient Roman legions. The gauntlet is actually a punishment, but you and Patti have it close enough that I feel reasonably confident readers will easily understand what's going on. :smileyhappy:

As for the Kirk thing...that's the Kobayashi Maru test it's designed to test a cadet's response to a no win scenario. In the Wrath of Kahn, McCoy bragged to Kirk's son that Kirk was the only one to ever beat the Kobayashi Maru. When Kirk explained that he rigged the test to do what he wanted, his son said, "You cheated." Kirk's response was "No, I don't believe in the no win scenario."

ok, I imagine that's FAR more than you wanted to hear about Star Trek, but I love the entire franchise!! :smileyvery-happy:

Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts!

Re: Reader Input

Hi Monica! Intriguing statement: Then there was the night... Sounds as if he is reminiscing and validating a family trait. A trait he takes pride in; coming from a long line of folk who challenge themselves as well as authority. A trait that makes them special and unique and one he feels proud to share.

Re: Reader Input

Hi Marisa,

I love what you pulled from the statement. It's amazing what words can do when different people read them. The result can be the same, and yet not the same. Thanks for sharing your perspective. I love it!

Re: Reader Input

Hi Monica,

my first impression is that it's a historical setting.

I'm thinking he's doing something either illegal or unethical. Or just the opposite something very heroic but going against what's excepted and expected. Like maybe aiding an underground railroad of some kind.

And then of course he comes from a family who takes risks and says to hell with everyone else.

Re: Reader Input

WOW! Debbie, The fact that you pull historical out of there is cool, because this book definitely has historical features without being an actual historical. Everyone's responses here have been great. It tells me the sentence is pretty much on track as long as I give a little more detail either before or after it's usage.

Thanks!! Monica

Re: Reader Input

Oh, and just to satisfy people's curiosity. This line is from the second book in my paranormal series coming out Sep 7th. The gauntlet is actually a punishment that my Sicari heroes occasionally are thrown into for misbehaving. They have to go between two rows of Sicari warriors who take potshots at them with their weapons. Naturally, my guys are tough and get through it. *grin*

You are soooo bad, but definitely sweet. Thank you. The only one you can't get is Obsession, which is out of print. :smileysad:

Re: Reader Input

Good grief! You can get a used copy of OBSESSION at B&N through another seller, but it's going for almost fifty bucks!!

Re: Reader Input

WOW! That's cheap. I've seen it as high as $80 something. LOL  I can't believe someone would pay that much. Besides, I'm hoping to resubmit it to another house in another year and then people can read an improved rewrite. *grin*

Re: Reader Input

Hi Monica - I'm about half-way through Assassin's Honor (I LOVE IT !! BTW) and I just got to the part with the gauntlet. All sorts of bells went off in my memory. This isn't the part that you were talking about in this thread  - but I guess it comes up again in one of the books in the series - Yes ?????

Re: Reader Input

Bingo! I refer to this gauntlet run in Assassin's Heart, which is why I posed the question. I didn't want to bog down AHeart with unnecessary verbiage if I could avoid it. I believe I just let it ride, hoping readers would either know what it was or understanding the basics of it. *grin*

I'm glad you're enjoying Assassin's Honor.
