Hello,
My name is Aggie and I began reading Siddhartha about six months ago but didn't get very far, distracted as I was by the business of life itself. I kept the book in my glove compartment and pulled it out to read occasionally when I needed something to read while I waited for an appointment or in a traffic jam. Of course I lost the thread of the story that way so welcome this chance to begin fresh and hopefully, gain a better understanding of the story this time.

Have you read Siddhartha or Hermann Hesse before? What interests you about reading this book? Reply to this message to introduce yourself to the group!
Hello,
My name is Gisela and I am thrilled to see Hermann Hesse's name on this board. I bought Siddhartha in 1953, in German, while I was still in school. Later, when I came to the US I bought a translation, but that too is ancient. What a great reason to run over to Barnes and Noble right now to get a new translation.
I have read most of H.H. sometime during my life, even began to reread "Magister Ludi" just a few months ago. Still can't get too far into it though. I've carried one of his poems with me for over 50 years and still find it "timely." Maybe even more so now that I am old. A poem about returning to one's "garden of youth" sits on my computer desk right now. I also enjoy his speeches, letters, biographical notes, especially what he has written about aging; I plan to visit Calw, Gaienhofen, and Montagnola one of these days...I have put together a folder of info that will eventually lead me into his footsteps. Hermann Hesse also enjoyed painting; a bio that gathers his memories of Christmases past is adorned with his water colors.
Ah, the question about interest in Siddhartha.....I love philosophical treatments and insights. As Siddhartha said: "I am not going anywhere. I am only on the way."
By the way, the link to the translation of poems in the "More Books By Hermann Hesse" leads to a book that will come out in March 2008.
Looking forward to reading with all of you,
Gisela

Hi Carp here
I read Siddhartha in college oh about 35 years ago in philosphy class. I remember being affected by the book. Last month on a long trip I listened to Siddhartha on tape and was transformed once again. I look forward to discussing the book. I was struck how Siddhartha runs the gamut of all human experiences.

Other books by Herman Hesse are equalling engrossing and fulfilling. I have always wanted to read more and more of him , but have only a few .
Perhaps its time for me to reread Siddhartha' journey and struglgle for Truth and Peace once again .
Thankyou for your participation, and reminding me in many ways of my own life.
