Re: Introduce Yourself

Hello, Jessica and fellow readers. My name is David, and I'm pleasantly surprised to see a discussion starting up on one of my favorite books, Siddhartha. I first read it in high school (many moons ago). I didn't "get it" but the book intrigued me. I read it again a few years later and it started to click. The more I read it, the more I get out of it. Because of "Siddhartha" I found that I liked Hermann Hesse. I read most of his works ("Magister Ludi" was one, though, that I never could finish). "Demian," "Beneath the Wheel," and "Narcissus and Goldmund" are among my favorite books.

Looking forward to the discussion!

Re: Introduce Yourself

Hello GROUP! :smileyhappy: My name is Harry Brake, I teach 11th Grade English at Seaford, Delaware! We just finished reading Siddhartha! I was wondering, would you be opposed after we return to school, to have my students enroll in this discussion as well to allow for their voices and experience in a book discussion? They have MANY questions regarding this! I loved the book, first time I read this! I volunteer at the Baltimore Aquarium, and make a reason to visit the Barnes and Noble in Baltimore every trip! :smileyhappy: If you'd like to see what my studenta are into, you can travel to www.seaford.k12.de.us/es/hbrake to see more! Glad to be here!

Sincerely,

Harry Brake

Re: Introduce Yourself

I read Siddhartha 40 years ago or more. I loved the book, found it almost lyrical, but according to my fading memory, there were some sections that did not seem quite right. I must read the book again, and enjoy joining the convrsations, my first.

Re: Introduce Yourself

Hello,
My name is Aggie and I began reading Siddhartha about six months ago but didn't get very far, distracted as I was by the business of life itself. I kept the book in my glove compartment and pulled it out to read occasionally when I needed something to read while I waited for an appointment or in a traffic jam. Of course I lost the thread of the story that way so welcome this chance to begin fresh and hopefully, gain a better understanding of the story this time.

Hi...My name is Vicki. I enjoy learning about foreign cultures and religions. I am not familiar with this book but am intrigued by the name...might this be referring to the "Buddha?" Whether or not...I find that I must read this book. Looking forward to the discussion.

Hello,

My name is Gisela and I am thrilled to see Hermann Hesse's name on this board. I bought Siddhartha in 1953, in German, while I was still in school. Later, when I came to the US I bought a translation, but that too is ancient. What a great reason to run over to Barnes and Noble right now to get a new translation.

I have read most of H.H. sometime during my life, even began to reread "Magister Ludi" just a few months ago. Still can't get too far into it though. I've carried one of his poems with me for over 50 years and still find it "timely." Maybe even more so now that I am old. A poem about returning to one's "garden of youth" sits on my computer desk right now. I also enjoy his speeches, letters, biographical notes, especially what he has written about aging; I plan to visit Calw, Gaienhofen, and Montagnola one of these days...I have put together a folder of info that will eventually lead me into his footsteps. Hermann Hesse also enjoyed painting; a bio that gathers his memories of Christmases past is adorned with his water colors.

Ah, the question about interest in Siddhartha.....I love philosophical treatments and insights. As Siddhartha said: "I am not going anywhere. I am only on the way."

By the way, the link to the translation of poems in the "More Books By Hermann Hesse" leads to a book that will come out in March 2008.

Looking forward to reading with all of you,

Gisela

Re: Introduce Yourself

Hi Carp here

I read Siddhartha in college oh about 35 years ago in philosphy class. I remember being affected by the book. Last month on a long trip I listened to Siddhartha on tape and was transformed once again. I look forward to discussing the book. I was struck how Siddhartha runs the gamut of all human experiences.

My name is Kim and I am an instructional technology specialist in a public school district in Chandler, Arizona. I have become very interested in Buddhism in the past two years, reading many books, joining a meditation group, and getting my hands on many new exciting books. I have not even heard of this book until today so I have ordered my copy and cannot wait to get started! Great to meet you all!
