Sarah dessen

Hey I've read a couple of Sarah dessen's books and I noticed that hardly anyone talks about them on here, even though I can kinda tell why. But either way I have read

  • along for the ride
  • dreamland
  • this lullaby
  • the truth about forever

another thing that I have noticed is that all of her books kinda of connect in someway ( in the truth about forever an old lady is reading a book by Barbara Starr who is in this lullaby as the main characters mom and lots of other stuff like that).

but either way I appreciate it if you would message me back

Re: Sarah dessen

Ah yes, Sarah Dessen is definitely one of my favorites.

Even though all of the stories have the same basic plot, she has that certain touch of making them different and unique.

My favorite would probably have to be the first one that I'd read; Just Listen.

Second favorite would be This Lullaby.

You should continue to read all of her books. They're definitely worth it.

Re: Sarah dessen

I agree with Kristina-Boo that Dessen's plots are repetitive, a girl has a vulnerability and then meets a sweet boy that gives her a happy ending. Not including Dreamland of course. But I love her books, I have read them all, I do not mind the repeated plot. I fall in love with the characters, they are not stereotypes from her other books, each different.

Re: Sarah dessen

I read my first Sarah Dessen novel a few months back. She's a much talked about teen author so I picked up Along for the Ride and really enjoyed it. It was refreshing and believable without being overly catty. I loved the balance between adventure, romance and drama throughout the book. Since then, I haven't picked up another Dessen novel just because I don't know where to begin after reading her most recent work. Plus, I felt like I got the jist of her work because I assumed that, like _melissa says, all of her plots are sort of repetitive.  Any suggestions on what Dessen novel to read after Along for a Ride?

Re: Sarah dessen

I have Just Listen by her and it was terrible so hard to read. The writing was bad. Although, I'd like to read Along for the Ride

Re: Sarah dessen

I don't have a favorite yet but I really liked along for the ride, this lullaby, and just listen which I just finished today and if any body does want to read some Sarah dessen novels I would pick the three mentioned above because I think that just listen kind of varies from Sarah dessens normal plot. Any idea which book I should read next?

Love her books! They all end so well, though they usually start out slow. My favorite is The Truth About Forever.

Re: Sarah dessen

the first book i read of hers was just listen and of course i loved it, since then ive given her books a shot, truthfully they dont really do it for me, if you read just listen and decide to read another one if her books in hope of finding something just as good, they are pretty repetitive, just listen is by far her best book alongside the one other book i felt maybe nearly was just as good, someone like you, i loved the concept and im sure alot can relate :smileyhappy:

Re: Sarah dessen

annabannanas12,

Were you referring to me as Atonement? I love Sarah Dessen, I have read all of her books and I am rereading "This Lullaby". I like to linger in her daydream like plots where her characters are charming and their inner conflicts are abstract after they meet a decent boy. I think I like Remy the best because her change is not as instant as the other girls. She is more complicated. The dialogue is always clever too. But then the plots are not that realistic to me in a sense that inner conflicts cannot be banished because a sweet boy whispers sweet nothings in your ear. That would be lovely. Dessen will always be on my shelves so when reality is hmm...not ideal, i can distract myself with the enviable lives of her characters. About "That Summer", the characterization is too subtle.

Re: Sarah dessen

I've also noticed that the books connect in a way.

I have only read that summer and just listen so far but they are great, and I plan to buy every single one of her books because I love them so much. She is truly a great author.
