Too old for teen books?

[ Edited ]

Hey everyone,

I was just wondering what your opinions are about how old is too old for reading teen books. Personally, I think young adult books are great and that people of all ages can enjoy them.

I'm 21 and I still love reading books in this genre, but sometimes my friends and cousins don't understand why I read these books and they have this preconceived notion that teen books are somehow childish or below them. If only they would give the books a chance and read them, I know they'd love them too! So frustrating!

I dont think you can really make rules or guidlines for who should read what books and at what age.  you read whatever books suit you and that you like, doesnt really matter what genre they are.

Re: Too old for teen books?

There is no age too old for teen books, or children's books for that matter. I'm 22, and the majority of the books I read are teen and children's novels. Harry Potter remains my favorite series even though it lives in the children's section-- you'd be surprised how many adults are shocked to find it there! I think there is a certain innocence that lives in a young adult fiction which I adore, and that makes it both timeless and ageless. In my opinion, adults that avoid the teen and children's section are missing out on some amazing, imaginative novels! Not only Harry Potter, but the Hunger Games series, the Mysterious Benedict Society series, the Mortal Instruments series... I could go on forever...

Looking for a new, mysterious read? Try the Maze Runner, by James Dashner! An intriguing read with veins of adventure and romance... I just finished it in the last hour and it was purely amazing!

I'm twice your age and I enjoy them too! A good book is a good book no matter what age group it represents. I like many different genres and always have. YA has more to offer than ever before so why not read them? Keep reading what you like and have fun! :smileyhappy:

Re: Too old for teen books?

I'm in my early twenties and I love teen books.  It's pretty much all I read.  I don't think there is an age limit to books so basically I agree with everyone haha.  My friends sometimes act like teen books are stupid too so I know how that goes, but like you said they should just read them because they are amazing

I don't think there is such a thing as too old to read teen books. Generally, they're the like the perfect type of book- the aren't written too simply, and the plot is still interesting enough.

I think that as long as YOU find them interesting, you're not too old for them.

Re: Too old for teen books?

Like many people who have responded, I'm in my 20's. I think a good book, is a good book, regardless of which shelf it comes off of. I look at the labels teen/young adult/children's books are more of a indicator of if you are younger that [blank age] this book is not for you; yet.

Even though you are an adult, whether in your 20's or above, everyone can identify with what being a teen was/is like. And if it's a good book it shouldn't matter what age group it's classified.

Re: Too old for teen books?

You are never to old for teen book! I work at a Barnes & Noble, and I can truthfully say that over half of the people working there read teen books all the time. Even children books! (We all love the Sister's Grimm Series :smileyvery-happy:) I am 20 and 9 out of 10 books that I read are teen books.

So don't worry about it.

If you can convince them to read the right book, they would see that teen books can be just as mature as some adult books. It is just that the main character is younger in the teen books.

Re: Too old for teen books?

Absolutely not. I am 20+ and I love teen books, some I feel are not relatable. A lot of the older teen books I have noticed are not as up to date with the modern times as far as teen having much more freedom now days. The teenagers in the older book (in my opinion) they seemed to have acted so much younger.  They also had more innocent problems.

The new ground breaking crossover books such as Harry Potter and Twilight have broadened the teen world and made it readable for adults.  Though some YA books as I said I can't relate to because it has such a difference in issues and themes.

I wish my friends read books. They have no rights to make fun of me because they don't read.

Teen fiction is one of the most cutting-edge and vibrant genre out there in my opinion.  And a lot of them are quite interesting and smart (they can give you an idea about young people, and hey, can develop a talking point with young people).

Re: Too old for teen books?

AHHH! Finally! I was beginning to wonder the same thing! I'm going to be turning 20 really soon but, there are so many good teen books that haven't come out yet that I don't ever think I could leave the teen reads section permanently. But I'm sure I could stay in the teen section for a good 5 years cuz right about now i look about 16. :smileytongue:

lol I feel exactly the same way! I'm 21, but everyone always thinks I look younger haha. After reading all these comments now, I think I might be reading teen books for life. They're just too good. =P
