I had the same prediciment that you did. I am such a Twilight Saga fan (reading the entire series about 6 times), I needed to find an alternative for a short time.
I began reading "NightWorld" series by L.J. Smith. These are very good books. The way the author captures your attention and keeps it involved is really impressive. If you like books realted to Vampires, Witches, Shapeshifters and other types of supernatural things, these books are for you.
The characters are really well written, and you fall in love with them.
I also began reading other books by L.J. Smith. I started reading Vampire Diaries, and The Secret Circle. I would have to say that "The Secret Circle" series are better than the Vampire Diaries". It was very hard for me to put the books down. They have some really good story lines, and you get captivated by the characters. You will Laugh, Cry, and she even throws many curves into the books. Just when you think you have figured out what will happen next, the throws in a twist.
Definately check into L.J. Smith. She writes the books almost as well at Stephanie Meyers does. Of course, Stephanie Meyers is tops in my book, but give these books a chance.
Happy Hunting.

I've always like Amelia Atwater-Rhodes. Her vampire stories are very intriguing and also her shapeshifters are amazing if you like fantasy and want something off vampires you try Hawksong.
Hawksong (The Kiesha'ra Series #1)
It's about a war between the Avians and the Serpentines and two leaders being sick of the generations of war they come together to reconcile. The whole series is facinating.

Thirst no. 1 and Thirst No. 2 are interesting. Although, it doesn't really follow the typical vampire romance that most vampire books have. It's more of an aquired taste

The good think about having the Nook, is that you can read all these books and not have to give up all the shelving space. Plus you can take the books with you wherever you go.

Nobody has mentioned Chelsea Quinn Yarbro? There was an 18th century French alchemist, supposedly immortal, the Comte de St. Germain. In Yarbro's version, he was a vampire, and her novels stretch from his origins before ancient Rome, across the world, up to the 20th century. There are over two dozen of them, beginning long before Anne Rice, decades before anyone ever heard of Sookie Stackhouse or the Twilight series.
