Hi all,

Welcome to the Barnes and Noble.com online discussion of Kiran Desai's extraordinary novel, The Inheritance of Loss. A young girl, orphaned and sent into the neglected Himalayan household of a bitter elderly relative, falls into her first romance and while they try to skirt the desperation and violence of the revolution and riots that come to take over the world around them, several stories unfold for us, from Kalimpong to Manhattan.

I hope you enjoy it and can't wait to hear what you think!

Re: Welcome from your moderator

Hi Rachel, so glad to see you moderating INHERITANCE. On first glance, this will be a dense, richly textured novel... I keep thinking of a thick, rich tapestry with brilliant colors and fascinating ethnic motifs.

There are many engines that drive the plot ... both eastern and western history, conflicting cultures, as well as the complex motivations of the flawed but fascinating characters .... there is plenty to explore in this story.

You've always been a wonderful guide with your insightful and incisive questions. I'm looking forward to your moderating this complex novel.
